Champagnes and Burgundies: Some port-like notes on the nose. On the palate it was rather stewed and pruney, lacked acidity. Another masculine wine from a warmer vintage so guessed 2005 Gevrey. Either it was advanced because it was a ‘03 or because of poor provenance.

Decanted three hours. Dark garnet color with some bricking. Potent nose of raspberries and cherries, with forest floor as well. Medium acidity, chalky tannins, complex palate with dark cherries, red currants, forest floor, cocoa - well layered flavors that end in a medium long finish that shows white pepper notes and oak. Very good, mature Burgundy wine that paired greatly with pan-roasted duck.

An absolute beast of a Burg - shockingly so, and even as I write this I still have to shake my head. This thing was wickedly tannic, stopping just a hair short of stripping off the top layer of your mouth. And the oak! Gobs of heavy vanilla and cedar combining with bold, ripe fruits for a decidely un-Pinot like wine (even Cali would be a stretch). The concensus was that our best guess would’ve been oaky Washington Syrah. Ugh. I wish I could say the wine eventually came around and redeemed itself, but over several days it barely budged. Obviously in need of more time, but it’s so poorly and awkwardly balanced that I’m not sure any amount of time is going to help. Hugely disappointing, especially given the price - what the hell were they going for here??

Drank with dinner at Charles Court at the Broadmoor Hotel. Popped and poured. Didn't take notes, but recall bright red cherry fruit on the nose and in the mouth right off the bat. An hour or so later, some lovely secondary notes emerged, with a chalky minerality and tartness that made it not unlike a cherry antacid tablet (in a good way!). Still very, very young, but tannins were smooth. Long finish. Very impressive.

Very dark, almost purple. Currant and spice and oak. Enourmously concentrated and rich with red currant, dark cherry fruit. Monumental, firm and crisp. This is a truly massive and youthful burgundy wine with a life expetancy matching mine. Courtesy of SM.

Very rustic but HUGE! I can't believe Faiveley gets flavors like this out of Pinot Noir. I have the feeling that this wine will outlast my chldren. Faiveleys wines are some of the best of the vintage in 2003.

Knightsbridge Annual Holiday Burgundy/Champagne Tasting and Sale (Northbrook, IL): Tasting, brief note. Very 2003 in terms of ripeness and modest acidity. Good concentration, but 2003 character really dominates. Not a personal fav today.

Overpowering fruit and tannic. I am gonna wait a few years before I try this again. Definitely not a delicate Pinot.

Wow, a tannic monster that softened over the hour. Drink with food and enjoy this concentrated, spice, plum, cherry and forest scented pleasure.
