Tuesday Night Double Blind $40+ (Bin 75): Darker core, cloudy rim, dull crimson rim; tarry, dark cherry, cranberry, nutty; firm tannin, medicinal, a hint of CdP in character, tarry finish, head, warm vintage; called Amarone just like before.

(Grill 23 – Boston) This, surprisingly, was a bit off. Classic Northern Rhone bacon fat and earth, but the palate was marred with a candy-like sweetness that is just not normal for this producer. I know the year was hot, and Voge (one of my two favorite producers or Cornas) did not handle it well based on this bottle. (87)

Delicious fruit. Dark berries..loganberry. Spice. For a syrah, very sweet warming wine, drinking well now. Perhaps a little short of depth on the mid palate. Tannins are mostly resolved.

Needs an hour or two of air to develop, but is rich, full and fruity, really no rough edges and drinking nicely already. A little short of personality, or perhaps a little acidity to make more of an impression.

Wild raspberries, rounded oak, herbs and flowers on the ripe nose. Not the most typical syrah, it could easily pass as chateauneuf (not that unlike Clos des Papes) or a very ripe burgundy. Extremely lusty taste with sweet raspberry ganache flavours, sweet liquorice, and a balanced, yet powerful warmth that carries the long aftertaste into pure happiness. In spite of the hot year, the wine still has freshness and balance. Drinking really well now, and for a long time to go.

France Trip Part 2 - Northern Rhône; 6/18/2006-6/20/2006: Tasted at the domaine. From 70 year old vines. A good result for a difficult vintage. Jammy purple fruits. Cinnamon and spice. Good acidity and purity of fruit. Definitely better than the 2003 VV.

Tasted at the domaine. Oldest vines, special parcel. Granite soil. More fruit and complexity on the palate than the 2003 V.V. (see TN). More freshness, though still very ripe for Cornas. Raspberry / dark cherry. Massive structure. Very impressive.

Medium core with 1/2" meniscus; cooked fruit, sweet, hints at minerality, dark and red fruit, soft tannin, Amarone-esque, good not great.

Rather plummy and portly. Sweet fruit. Still some minor tannins. Likely atypical, but enjoyable.

Musky on the nose, but bright on the palate with a little spice... though smooth with slight minerality. Ruby in color.
