2010 Yarra Yering Dry Red N°1

  • Decanted for 4 hours and drank from the 1st hour.

Nose: Strong vanilla notes with plums, blackcurrent and violets. With time in the decanter leather and earth also appeared together with red fruits and a high toned acetate elements.

Palate. On first taste the oak somewhat overwhelmed the fruit. But the fruit quality was really high with an initial wave of black fruits followed by crisper red fruits as the ample acidity.
After 4 hours the vanilla had toned down and the fruits mellowed into more of the red fruit spectrum together with more tertiary leather and earth overtones. At the 3-4 hour mark while the complexity grew the fruit quality became slightly muddied.

A really nice wine that I think I caught at the wrong times. I had the first couple of glasses at the one hour mark and the fruit quality was high but the oak was a little too prominent. By the four hour mark the complexity was there but the fruit definition was slightly lacking.

I’d drinking now based on this bottle I would decant for a couple of hours.

  • Excellent after a long decant.

Very light weight upon opening and ruby red. Once in full stride, dark berry, cassis, some cigar and mineral tones. Lovely body that is supple and powerful at the same time. Black currant, cherry and some brightness for contrast. A long spicy finish. Fine tannin and very smooth.

    Drink now to 6+ years.

  • Wow, quite an eye opener for me who generally eschews New World wines. A brilliant come-hither nose, deep ruby with some signs of age On the palate, deep pure cassis, blackberry, tomato leaf, rich and beautiful. Excellent acid balance, silky texture, juicy, harmonious, well integrated tannins. Opened beautifully in the glass! Has some time to go still I reckon.

  • A very good wine. Rich red fruits with the expected spine of tannins framed with oak. Perhaps suffered a bit due to high expectations and probably drunk just before it really enters it’s intended drinking window.

  • Yum! Nose of camphor and moss. Very smooth on the palate with the fruit well integrated with the tannins. Showing blackberry notes. And a licorice finish. Quite good.

  • Lesson learned. Should have read the reviews before opening.

Tasted out of bottle before decanting and was a little worried. Corky, browning at the edges...and where was the fruit??? And I didn't bring a backup!! Make small talk, delay serving the food and pray like mad!! Half an hour later and it was still dubious and underwhelming. What would you do? I poured and prayed nobody would notice.
An hour after decanting, it was as if Jesus had breathed on it. It came alive. No, it BLOSSOMED. Smooth, silky, a good dollop of fruit and a full retreat of tannin. A Latour in bloom. I can understand why they call it "iron fist in a velvet glove". Seriously it was that good. Everyone was happy. My prayers were answered. I was worried that 12 years on, it would be over the hill. No way. This has durability. Drinking well now and till 2026.

    Would I buy again? Absolutely!
Would I do anything different? Absolutely! Read the reviews. Decant for an hour or two or even a day. This wine isn't in a rush to show itself. Don't be impatient.
Any regrets? Absolutely....that was my last bottle.
    AO's. DCBA.

  • 375ml format - served straight from bottle. Darkly opaque with some brown dusty edges of age. Presently beautifully but followed tough competition (2001 Moss Wood CS). Stylish dark fruits, earth, cedar and ash. Was perhaps a little dry and muted (but given no air) relative to MWCS01. Still enormously enjoyable.

  • A hazy dark ruby colour.
A cedar and blackcurrant/dark cherry nose of medium intensity.
The new French oak is prominent on the palate although the body of the fruit does its best to compensate.Violet coming through, otherwise similar black fruits as were evident on the nose. Acidity adds freshness and persistence to the back palate.Tannins are  fine and silky and the alcohol perfectly balanced.
I initially tasted this within a couple of hours of opening, and it wasn't pleasant with varnishy oak sitting on top dominating the fruit. In fact, it really didn't fully come into its own until the next day after a night in the fridge and then brought back up to room temperature.
The wine is singing right now, with the acidity providing a vibrant and youthful freshness.Given this is the case, plus the absence of tertiary characters, it could  potentially last for another decade.

  • Strong favorite here. Great balance of red fruit and cigar box, good structure and that classic Yarra Yering structure and herbal underpinning tying it together.

  • Deep red color maybe browning a little at the edges. Coffee, cloves, dried herbs and some red berry on the nose. Medium-bodied, this is still on the young side in my opinion with plenty of fine grained tannins, strong fruit and only faint hints at any tertiary development. A good acidic cut prevents this from being cloying. Long finish.

  • I enjoyed this wine but for all of the acclaim, I didnt quite think the QPR was there. It was quite racy on day 1 and settled down really nicely on day 2. A lot of red fruit and pretty food friendly but I personally didn't get any sort of wow factor to justify the price tag. It has a lot of life left though - drinks a lot younger than a 10 year old bottle.

  • Very good. Bright red fruits, oak, Bourbon. A very long finish. Opened this about 2 hours before drinking.

  • Another try. This time w some opening time. Love the color. This is a sexy looking wine. Purple, velvet.
The nose is rustic, loads bright rustic fruit, very multi berry jammy, w some mature ripe notes, sugary creamy oak in there. SMells delish.
Layers and layers, attack varies, big gulps of fruit. Yummy. Wow, that was a roller coaster, then bit fading.
There is fruit attack, tannins wow. \

  • P&P...Lovely French Oak nose, some dusty Aussie fruit, beautiful. In the glass, opaque purple. Not extracted, just rich ripe fruit. Getting Eucalyptus, bell pepper, mint, blue fruit. Awesome palate, just explodes, luxurious fruit expanding. Double swallow to get it down, finish is nice. This is so balanced, so together drinking great off the cork. Imagine lots life and will evolve into something different, but in a great place right now.

  • From the land down under - Q4 Wine Club (The Apt): Wine #18: It is never easy to be at the end of a line-up of these, but perhaps even harder when the theme is Australia. That being said, I did enjoy this wine. It was very well balanced. Some nice fruit to it (not always what I think of when I think of the No 1). Decent acidity. Could certainly go longer, but in a nice drinking window now. I enjoyed it. (3 pennies)

  • Brief note, trade tasting. Blend based predominantly on Cabernet. Shows blue fruit (blackberry), violets, and smooth tannins. Nice today and should develop further.

  • Lots of dark Cabernet fruit, undergrowth, spices on the nose. Well balanced and fresh on the palate with polished tannins. Nice, rich finish. 91-93

  • Still needs more time but drinking well after a one hour decant. Blueberries, lead pencil and forest floor notes. Slightly meaty on the back palate.

  • There's a great story behind Yarra Yering and (the now late) Dr Carrodus who founded it (see: www.yarrayering.com). And his wines, now of international fame, bear testament to that story, his ingenuity and his love of Old World wines. His Dry Red No 1 is his Yarra Valley take on the Bordeaux Blend.

At 6 yrs, it already has an earthy, concentrated complexity, with soft, juicy blackberry and cassis fruits, and a long and quite dusty, savoury French Oak inspired finish. Drink now to 2020.

It's not really worth its $92 price tag given the strong competition from other Aussie wineries producing Bordeaux Blends. But it's classy, and few other wineries have managed to gain the same reputation. It therefore gets a very respectable Wozza 94.5/100 (4.1/5.0) from me.

  • At Chateau Davyd. Tasted blind.
Appearance is clear, deep intensity, ruby colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of milk chocolate oak, blackcurrant, blackberry, black plums, slight blackcurrant leaf. Developing.
On the palate, dry, high acidity, mediumalcohol (13%), smooth medium+ tannins, full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of blackberries, blackcurrant, black plums, milk chocolate, slight cassis. Medium+ finish.
Very good quality. I was guessing a good Margaret River Bordeaux blend here. Riper than the 2009 vintage of this, just doesn't finish as well. Still needs time to integrate and will definitely improve over the next 4-5 years.

  • Ah, this is good. Starting to show some maturity in the turn of fruit to earth. I guess, a little further down the road than I'd expect, but I haven't had enough experience with this wine. Yes, fragrant and mature red and black berry fruit.

  • very lifted nose, fragrant
    Quite firm and meaty
Fuller than 2009, some oak but very integrated
