  • Still somewhat closed, although more open than previous bottle. Seems very young, and initially shows oaky aromas, although they blend in with airing. Round, ripe, deep, dark plums. Cellared since original release.

  • I think Baden Spatburgunders from Huber are a real match for the more high leveled Burgundy Pinot Noirs and this particular bottle made of old vines doesn't change my opinion. Relatively dark colored. Smoky flavours as well as cherry tones fill the nose, followed by modest oaky elements sustained by good acidity which give this a real lift. Paired with seared duck breast and black pepper sauce. A perfect match.

  • Very good pinot noir, opens up after 30 minutes, excellent smell and very long taste

  • Closed up right now, not showing anywhere like it did last year. Oaky, possibly reductive to go with dark fruit.

  • Asperg Wine Syndrome Tasting Group: Germany and Oregon (Asperg): Clear, medium-deep ruby-garnet color. Clean, medium intense and lovely nose with lots of dark fruit (berries and cherries), herbs, some oak and a hint of cinnamon.
Dry. Astonishingly high, ripe and vibrant acidity. Fine grained, medium tannin. 13,5% abv. Medium+ intense flavors of fine red fruit, soil, graphite and very few well integrated oak. Perfectly balanced, elegant with good vibrancy and tension. Medium+ finish. Potential for further ageing of 5+ years. 90++

  • Asperg Wine Syndrome Tasting Group: From southern Germany to Oregon Pinot (Private Location): Clearly more on the dark cherry side on the nose. You also get a bit of red currant, grilled herbs and a hint of cinnamon. Although this is considered a warm vintage I really loved the fresh, playful acidity on the palate. More red fruit here mixed with a bit of Orange. The tannins are very well integrated into the wine. Smooth but also vibrant finish.
Huber is always a save bet imo and even in a warmer he could deliver.

  • Surprisingly dark; pino nose with cherry, herbs, bit smoky; interesting green pepper aroma, cherry, bit pepermint and orange; good integrated wood, medium bodied with fresh acidity and distinct tannins; love this, one of the best spätburgunder i had so far. Drink now.

  • Cellared since original release. Surprisingly good freshness for the vintage, excellent precision to red fruits. Drink or hold.

  • My second bottle of this wine. Have to admit that the wine did improve a bit since last year, which is something that I didn't expect (see my earlier review). The wine seems to have balanced out a bit; tannins and “oakiness” have softened a little and fruit is slightly more present. A decent wine (better than my own personal wine homebrews) but definitely not a superstar either. Maybe next year? I doubt it, but we'll find out. Until then, enjoy this wine with some food, to make it more appreciable.

  • Opens up after 2 hours and shows it real strenght with plenty of flavours in the smell and lots of complexity in the taste. It isstill far too young but i am sure it will devellop very positive in 3-6 years from now.

  • After the fabulous 2008 vintage, I was looking forward to taste the 2009 version of this wine. Unfortunately it is not the same.
Wonderful nose, great color, nice tannins, good acidity (sharper than 2008), but somehow it is still very different.... Although a decent wine, to me this vintage is too dry and has a too one-dimensional taste, with quite some bitter notes. Clearly not the same as the 2008. Alcohol is very high, and although the wine may soften over time, I don’t expect a dramatic improvement. We did not finish the bottle that night (3 people), which usually is a good indicator on its own already.

  • (13.5%) 100% Pinot Noir - Warm with soft edges and nice strawberry notes followed by a heavy cinnamon spice which lingers all the way through the finish. This wine was better when opened as it had a nice acidity which kept it linear and focused. Now on day 4 it is more fruit driven. Either way one of the better Spätburgunders I've had to date...

  • Consumed over two days. The wine was light- to medium ruby in colour with a purple touch. It offered ripe red and dark fruits, some cucumber, Asian spices, chocolate, sandalwood and some earthy notes on the nose. On the palate the medium-bodied, creamy wine showed intense sour cherry and vanilla flavours, sweet mixed berries, some cucumber, bacon, spices, chocolate, smoke and a hint of tobacco, paired with medium-level acidity and very good length. 87+

I recently bought four bottles of each of the Bernhard Huber Spätburgunder Alte Reben 2009, the Friedrich Becker Spätburgunder Kalkgestein 2009 and the Karl H. Johner Pinot Noir Bischoffinger Steinbuck 2009, which are all in the price range of EUR 27.- to EUR 33.-, I have now had the chance to taste each wine. The 2009 Bernhard Huber Alte Reben was much riper, fruitier and oakier than the Friedrich Becker Kalkgestein and the Karl H. Johner Bischoffinger Steinbuck. The Friedrich Becker and Karl H. Johner both had a very intriguing savoury quality that I did not find in the Bernhard Huber. If rated, to me the Friedrich Becker finished first place as the most palatable and intriguing wine (89), followed by the most traditional and most structured Karl H. Johner (88+), and the ripe and oaky Bernhard Huber (87+). All three wines are very young. For drinking now I prefer the Friedrich Becker Kalkgestein, which already is hard to resist now. The Karl H. Johner Bischoffinger Steinbuck is build for the long haul and needs time. With respect to the Bernhard Huber it will be interesting to observe if and how the oak integrates. I will stock up with the Friedrich Becker Kalkgestein, but will not stock up with the Bernhard Huber Alte Reben.
