  • Excellent and can se its very complex but boy, this is an angry wine. Dark, brooding, maybe would have preferred it younger?

  • Giuseppe Rinaldi in Tucson, or Tom comes to Tucson Night 1 (Ciabot Tucker): Double decanted in the AM and drunk over dinner.

A beautiful and suppler nose than the Brunate le Coste. Wonderful perfume. Surprisingly this has a little more savory going on than the Brunate on the palate. What shines for me is its grace. It's beautifully proportioned and texturally brilliant. Lively intense yet with a beguiling sense of grace. Youthful but what a future! 96+

  • (Magnum) The 2008 is more somber, austere, with a bigger core of muscle, tannin, structure and vigor next to the 2007. The bouquet opens up with impact and grace with aromas of blue/purple fruits and flowers. A truly spellbinding drinking experience today. No rush though.

  • The 2008 Cannubi San Lorenzo - Ravera shines with immense fragrance, allure and a terrific, classically austere Rinaldi feel. Spiced berries, dried blue flowers, sage, potpourri, anise and cigar jump out of the glass up to the nose; swaths of Nebbiolo flavors that make it hard to stop swirling the glass. Beaming, forceful it comes across. On the palate I found dense, juicy and fierce textures, surrounded by partly silken elements. The tannins are firm & vital, also noble and stimulating the mouthfeel together with the continuous intense odor. Layers and levels build up with some time dedicated to this Barolo. The red cherry fruit is enhanced with deep floral tones; lavender, iris, sage, tobacco, blood orange and some tilled earth all rise. There is a lingering, waving sweetness here that fuses so well with upcoming more spicy aromas on the mid palate. A wine with clout but also high-leveled precision and vigor. Orange rind and more dried flowers show up on the long, buzzing finale. A truly wonderful, ultra classic and compelling Rinaldi Barolo with a huge potential for years to come. And - once again - the proof that Cannubi San Lorenzo - Ravera (and today Tre Tine) deserves all the same attention as Brunate (-Le Coste).

  • Barolo 2008 (My place): This was a bit grumpy on day one, with tannins which felt a bit aggressive and a palate with a lot of substance and which felt almost austere. In the flight with Bartolo Mascarello, which showed a sublime balance and elegance this suffered a bit.
It evolved nicely and came out much better on day 2, when it showed as a powerful but at the same time well balanced Barolo.

  • This drink well already, but no worries for more cellar time. That sour-sweet fruit puzzles me, intriguing yet there it does remind me of almost balsamic like tones on the nose which disappears on the palate. Elegance, as Rinaldi always shows, is a key here, yet powerful. Good length. Quite smooth overall, but love the spine made by the terrific acidity perfectly balance by the fruit. Rinaldi drinks early in my book, so why wait?

  • Wonderful mix of bright red fruit and spices. Fresh and forward with great complexity already.

  • Threw significant sediment, like large pieces of wood.

  • On the nose, I found expressive aromas of dark red to black cherry fruit, violets, tobacco, and licorice. On the palate, I found ripe red fruit, spices, and tobacco with a striking level of sweetness and zesty acidity. The tannins remain noticeable and while the wine is overall elegant in the context of Barolo, they are a bit coarse and rustic in comparison to the wines G. Rinaldi is producing today. It is a wonderful wine and very classic in feel, with the striking perfume and sweetness level that is a signature of the ‘08 vintage.

  • Darker profile, herbs, hints of tar, cherry, hint of a green note, earthy. Angular palate, sharp but ripe tannins, beautiful big fruit and balancing acid. Well balanced, long finish.

  • Beppe Rinaldi Cannubi - San Lorenzo - Ravera 2008.
Flott nese med godt begynnende modning.
Tjære, søt tobakk, teblader og avslepen Nebbe-frukt.
Pen nese - skulle jeg pirke på noe, kunne den vist noen sexy toner også.
    Sursøt sunn frukt i anslaget.
    Elegant med ypperlig kraft.
    Fresh og ren.
Dette drikker rett så bra nå.
    Kantfritt mellomparti.
Lineær kurve som ender i en laaang finish med helt finkornede tanniner.
    Fortsatt flott bitt her.
    Nydelig vin. 93p

  • Dobbeltdekantert tidlig på dagen og servert på kvelden. Et lite viff av VA først. Under er det tydelig rødbærsfrukt og rosebed. Dyp munnfølelse med finesse. Ren og pen med tilgjengelige tanniner. God avslutning. På et bra stadie nå!

  • I grabbed this out of the cellar last week, with the news of Beppe's passing still fresh in my mind. Thankfully, I was "smart" enough to only Coravin a couple glasses of this, instead of pulling a cork. Very pretty, with plenty of acidity, but still entirely primary - unsurprisingly.

A week later, curiosity and/or rote muscle memory got the better of me..... what, with having observed a standing half-full (yet hermetically-and-argon-sealed) bottle on my counter for all that time?!

It's still very pretty but, drying with every second that it tries to linger mid-palate.

    Hold, people - please. HOLD!

  • Purple red, hmm quite extracted, a very unrepresentative Rinaldi, almost like a Cdp, a strange Rinaldi, we have had this before but this was a curve ball, I’m not going rate this

  • 2008 Barolo&Barbaresco Check-in (Osteria Langhe, Chicago IL): Nose: The nose is flowing, deep, and perfumed with violets, wild flowers, rose petals, earth notes, strawberries, red cherries, licorice, and tar tones. There is an ethereal quality to it all with an understated purity.

Taste: Medium/full bodied with high acidity and high tannins. The structure is extremely youthful with the tannins having a real taught quality to them. The feel is refined and feminine with violets, wild flowers, rose petals, earth tones, red cherries, and strawberries.

Overall: This was an absolutely beautiful, young Barolo. It is filled with a poise and finesse that speaks to its top class quality. Still, this could easily use another 8-10 years to fully show itself and can go much longer than that.

  • 2008 Piedmont at Osteria Langhe (Chicago, IL): Silky red fruit on the nose and palate here. This is obviously very, very young, and you can tell that there seems to be more stuff that is coiled under the veneer of florals and red cherry. In fact, this is a very powerfully structured wine, with lots of acidity and tannin on the back end. It's just that right now, this has yet to have shed its fruit, so that big structural frame isn't that obvious.

  • More raw and dark than the '07 next to this. Balsamic and brambly black fruit. Tannic, powerful wine. It's not unenjoyable, but it's also not particularly giving right now despite obvious breeding and potential.

  • What a beautiful wine that is entering its drinking window with silk and elegance. Terrific texture, balance and complexity with a lasting finish. This will drink well for a couple of decades at least.

  • 2008 Barolo Retrospective (Blind tasted) (The North End Grill): The nose showed depths of red plum and black cherry with sweet soaring floral tones, hints of wild herbs and a pleasant dose of sweet spice. On the palate, I found zesty, soft textures hosting spice-infused inner florals and juicy fresh cherry, as notes of leather and spice added grip. It finished long on sweet cherry with zesty spices and acids lingering long. This was so easy to like already and perfectly balanced for further development.

  • Dinner at TDS (Chicago, IL): A gorgeous, young Barolo. Full, raw nose with fresh black cherry, sweat, new leather, spice, fennel and fresh florals. The palate is youthfully exuberant but well-proportioned and drinking well. Tannins are youthfully coarse, but the opulent fruit provides a good counter balance. Fun to drink now, but the best days are ahead. Upside from here.

  • Dinner at Table, Donkey and Stick (Chicago, IL): What an amazing young Barolo. This is light, elegant, and floral, with a beautiful red-fruited lift that just stops you in your tracks. To be sure, this is very young right now, but there's nothing here that would make it unapproachable. This is still so jam-packed with primary fruit that it still obscures the tannins, and while the fruit lends a bit of tartness, this is never shrill. Not much earth or dirt to speak of right now; almost ten years in, this is still very primary. Of course we want to see where this goes with age, but this is already very much enjoyable now.

  • Opened immediately and you smell that immediate bouquet of a rose garden. On the palate and over two hours flavours of primary fruit like cherry to the fore front. Tannins are evidently there which leads me to believe it's got a long life ahead. I put this away for at least 5 more years. For tonight though, on that nose alone, 95....with potential for more once the tannins soften.

  • A stunner, savory, sweet, complex, layered, nose of the night and in some very high class company 90 Sassicaia, 97 & 99 Rayas, 96 Estournel & 03 Ducru Beaucaillou, WOTN with the Estournel, absolutely delicious, a Barolo of supreme breeding and will improve, agree with what Antonio said "totally sublime personality"

  • Followed over 8 hours in decanter. First had great nose of tar, cough syrup, black fruit. Palate was silly smooth and dominated by fruit and tar but seemed hollow and holding back. Was best after six hours. Nose turned more spice, herbs, cloves, with tar and balsamic. Palate put on some weight with nice grip and acidity. Will decant longer next time. Expect this to continue to be phenomenal with more age.

  • Rinaldi night - second wine after 09 brunate, together with 03 ravera
Darker than 09 brunate, Wow nose! Better than the 09 brunate, sweet floral, very open but will improve with cellaring, as good as the stupendous 08 brunate drank last year, but not as good as the 03 ravera

  • P&P: Light red towards brown. Modest nose with cherries and fresh tobacco. First association at the first sip was a seductive though subtle sweetness with fresh flowers, dark red fruits and hints of tobacco. First impression was distinctive and very attractive with lots of promise. The modest and integrated tannins were a surprise.
Two hours later in a decanter its a different wine, with a WOW factor. The wine had opened up both on the nose and palate with bittersweet cherries, exotic spices, more dark red fruits, dark chocolate and fine grained tannins were definitely present. It showed power yet elegance through the whole curve and it just lasts forever. If you want to try it let it breathe for 3 hours. It will not disappoint.

  • Orange peel, classic, red fruits, tar, baking spices. Massive tannins, red fruit finish. This will be fantastic with more bottle age.

  • Still very young but wow the aromas and the structure fantastic. Wait another few years before u try again

  • Beautiful nose of dark cherries, bitter chocolate and eucalyptus. On the palate the wine is still quite young with a good, thick, steely texture and lovely flavors of tree bark, dark chocolate and smoky cherries. Finishes tight and tannic but the tannins are smooth and ripe and while this is drinking well tonight with food, it needs 10 years to begin to show secondary flavors and complexity. Really well-made, classy Barolo. 92+

  • Two per day, why not?; 7/29/2013-8/8/2013 (Enoteca Barolo - Madrid): Young but a real Barolo here.
Black pepper nose. Complex and delicious.
Full bodied mouthfeel. Same good sensations. Long and fine.
Like that sweet yet elegant touch.
    My choice.

Por fin un Barolo de verdad aunque joven.
Nariz a pimienta negra. Compleja y deliciosa.
Sensación en boca de cuerpo entero. Las mismas buenas sensaciones. Largo y adecuado.
Me gusta ese toque dulce pero elegante.
    Mi elección.

  • Drank in the Langhe.
Some volatile acidity on open - cleared fairly quickly. Light nose - definitely no oak but mild leather / saddle. Lovely garnet colour without bricking yet, of course. Firm tannins and matching acidity. Lovely balance on this and, I'm assured by the locals, that this will mature into a definitive Barolo in 10 years - I have no reason to doubt them. Roses appeared by magic in the glass after an hour. I hope to try his cousin, Francesco Rinaldi's 1991 vintage tomorrow.
