2023 Napa in the City: Gala Dinner (The Pool in NYC): Small taste because this isn’t my grape and it’s still not my grape but I do love the old wines from this producer (we did an old Riesling last year when we were out in Napa at Press and it was great). Really fun to get to try.

Sort of a strange disconnect between a firm mineral framing with really ripe, sweet marzipan and tropical fruit notes, without much in the middle. More surprising than enjoyable, but not bad.

Rayas and friends (Chicago, IL): Very dark colour. A lot of people at the table liked this wine a lot more than I did. While it didn't show any oxidation, it had a really weird botrytis and coconut quality to it (almost like a Sauternes). Rounded texture with some good acids, but as far as chardonnay goes, really not my style.

With the color of an aged Sauternes, the oily textured, concentrated wine is low in acidity, with honeysuckly, caramel, citrus peel and butterscotch. When first poured, the wine seemed oxidized, but it improved in the glass after 10-20 minutes. This was quite a wine considering it was a 30 year old California Chardonnay.

With Halina at lunch at SRO. John Gontner gave us a taste. Rich. Straw color. Excellent nose. Coconut. Lovely. Elegant and restrained. Rich and full on the palate. Buttery, creamy. Great balance. Wow! Very fine. 5-10-16-7: 88/100.

With K at the Carnelian Room on our 10th anniversary. (Contributed by Paul Wysnyi, a diner at the neighboring table, in exchange for a glass of our 1980 DRC Richebourg). Tremendous color. Deep, shot gold. Great viscosity, very rich. Absolutely lovely nose. Very complex, with multiple nuances. Great butter and richness. Cream. Excellent on the palate, showing cream and pure vanilla. One of the very best Stony Hill's I have ever had and I've never had a bad one. Finish goes on forever. Amazingly good. 5-13-19-9: 96/100.

Lemon custard. Lots of acid overpowering an otherwise naturally aged chardonnay.

Not quite showing as nice as the previous bottle, as the nose was a little volatile. Palate was still singing though with nice fruit and acid.

After about 30min in the decanter this wine really showed its colors. Bread crust, honeysuckle, and red apple.

CREAMY BUTTERSCOTCH AND CITRUS IN THE NOSE. FLAVOR LIKE THE NOSE WITH VERY RICH FRUIT. NICE ACIDITY AND A MEDIUM TO LONG FINISH.
