2023 Napa in the City: Gala Dinner (The Pool in NYC): Small taste because this isn’t my grape and it’s still not my grape but I do love the old wines from this producer (we did an old Riesling last year when we were out in Napa at Press and it was great). Really fun to get to try.

Sort of a strange disconnect between a firm mineral framing with really ripe, sweet marzipan and tropical fruit notes, without much in the middle. More surprising than enjoyable, but not bad.

Rayas and friends (Chicago, IL): Very dark colour. A lot of people at the table liked this wine a lot more than I did. While it didn't show any oxidation, it had a really weird botrytis and coconut quality to it (almost like a Sauternes). Rounded texture with some good acids, but as far as chardonnay goes, really not my style.

With the color of an aged Sauternes, the oily textured, concentrated wine is low in acidity, with honeysuckly, caramel, citrus peel and butterscotch. When first poured, the wine seemed oxidized, but it improved in the glass after 10-20 minutes. This was quite a wine considering it was a 30 year old California Chardonnay.

Lemon custard. Lots of acid overpowering an otherwise naturally aged chardonnay.
