On the nose, a bit more slate and graphite than the 98. Slightly more acid on the palate, with a degree less fruit opulence. The more elegant of the two, just slightly shaded by the still intact fruit of the 98.
Finished the bottle the next day (recorded and refrigerated overnight) and it held up well.

Double Blind Tasting w/ DC Crew (Weygandt Wines - Washington, D.C.): Nose of plum cake, roasted fig, berry compote, pepper and coffee. Bold but still firm, a smoky-rich aesthetic, with plums and blueberries. Notes of cola, vanilla, soy, coffee and mushroom. Long, quite complex. I made a confident Barossa Shiraz guess, but picked 2005. I’m impressed by how young this is showing. Veritas wines can do wonderful things with age, and I really like revisiting wines from this producer. Actually one of my favorite wines of the tasting.

This wine was tasted in double-blind fashion at Vintage Wines, Ltd. The bottle was kindly provided by Maury Dietrich. The robe is opaque red/garnet. The nose is moderately intense and shows aromas of plums, tar and smoke. Full-bodied on the palate, with low acidity, medium ripe tannins and hot alcohol (listed as 14%, although I suspect higher). The flavors are ripe and black fruit-dominated. Nothing is lacking on the middle palate, other than an ice cube to tame the hot alcohol. This same heat frames the long finish. I simply don't understand the hoopla about this wine, although I might think differently if it had been served 5-10 degrees cooler. Drink now-12/16.

Pretty smart and quite typical of BV shiraz around this age. Mature red fruits, aniseed and licorice, some heat and burn (albeit faint). Looks good and another reference point to support the arguement that 1999 may well overshadown 1998. Has another 3yrs+.

In my view an exceptional wine. Although colour was a little dull there was little sediment. Tannins came through more on the nose than after a mouthful. Surprising youthfulness in this wine still lots of dark berry fruit flavours. A delight.

Australia Day Dinner (Tagine - Chicago, IL): Provocative aromas of blackberry, mint and smoke. Palate shows the complexity of aged, spicy, brambly black fruit. Some meat and leather notes. Powerful yet elegant and precise.

Had at Oriental Garden. Paired exceptionally well with both duck preparations and with pork short ribs. Well balanced showing cassis, leather, tar. 40 sec finish

1999 Barossa Shirazathon (Sydney, Australia): I decided to save this for the last flight due to its power but it ended up being out classed. Deepest colour wine that I noticed tonight. Powerful, concentrated, still youthful fruit ... but too simple at this level.

Oddbods Committee Tasting; 10/12/2023-10/13/2023 (New Inn Colchester): Expressive menthol and cherry on nose. Continues through on the sweet palette. A joy to drink.

Dissapointing. Powerful oak overwhelmed the faded fruit
