100% Monastrell from Jumilla. Fermented and macerated for 25 days with the skins in stainless steel tanks. Aged for 12 months in French oak barrels. 15% alcohol.
Somewhat evolved and slightly hazy pomegranate color with a mature rusty hue. Evolved, dark-toned and rather mature nose with aromas of earthy spices, some wizened black cherries, a little bit of lifted nail polish character, light raisiny tones, an oxidative touch of beef jerky and a touch of dried figs. The wine is ripe, juicy and quite sweet-toned on the palate with a noticeably full body and bold flavors of dried figs, raisins, some strawberry jam, a little bit of oxidative beef jerky, light lifted notes of nail polish, a hint of cherry marmalade and a touch of prunes. The overall feel is so sweet-toned that I start to wonder whether the wine is just so ridiculously ripe, or if there is actually a little bit of residual sugar there? The high alcohol lends some noticeable heat to the palate. With its somewhat modest acidity and medium tannins, the overall feel is soft yet moderately firm. The finish is rich, juicy and quite warm with some tannic grip and lengthy flavors of raisins, some cherry marmalade, a little bit of oxidative beef jerky, light salty-umami notes of soy sauce and a hint of earthy spices.
Ugh, this feels like a Spanish take on Amarone. Even though the wine isn't made from raisined grapes, the substantial body, raisiny flavors, pronounced alcohol and quite conspicuous sweetness make the wine feel very similar to an Amarone. And while the wine isn't over the hill in any way, the fruit department is getting already quite old and there are some oxidative nuances of beef jerky and soy sauce creeping in, making the wine feel already quite mature and somewhat tertiary. Based on how the wine is performing, I'd say it really doesn't need any more age but instead needs to be consumed now or quite soon in the future. Can't really say I'm a fan of this kind of lush, sweet, soft and alcoholic stuff - to me this felt like a rather clumsy wine which hadn't really picked up much finesse or complexity with age.

Upon pop n pour, I wrote: "A bit sweet, but good quaffer". But a day later, the sweetness evaporated and the wine got much more complex and enjoyable. Let this one breathe a good long time and you will be rewarded with a longer finish, more tannin flavor and lighter body than when you first pop it.

Interesting second bottle of a new varietal. First our group had a Carmenere from Chile, which we enjoyed. This bottle offered a fuller deeper flavor. Great nose (drank in a Vinum XL Cabernat glass) rich blackberry, dark cherry, smokey nose. Paired well with Salami and cheese but we could see it doing well with a great steak. Good wine for the price point!

A bit soft and way too much vanilla (oak) for my tastes. It's too bad - the raw materials here are solid (lots of flavorful fruit, some mellow tannins, etc.). Call it a good party wine.

Garnet to dark garnet color in the glass, clear looking throughout. Nice nose of spices, berries and raspberries. Flavors of berries, raspberries and cherries. Medium acidity, medium tannin, medium to full bodied. Drink over the next few years.

Beautiful Monastrell wine! Dark in color, with notes of violets hitting the nose on the first sniff. Notes of warm baking spices, smoke, vanilla, and cedar on the palate. A little tight and tannic on the finish, but still one of the favorites of the evening for our tasting panel of thirteen.

Hard to complain about this wine at the price point. Spicy dark fruits, slightly sweet on the entry to the palate. A hint of smoke and meat add complexity--very much a mourvedre. Moderate finish. Adds some heat when approaching room temp. Nice QPR.

Appearance was clean, medium intense, ruby with thick legs and no signs of sediment.
On the nose, the wine was clean, medium youthful intensity of blackberry, blackcherry, and plum jam, black pepper, sweet spice from oak and slight animal, game.
The palate was dry, medium + tannins, medium + body, medium + acidity, and high alcohol. The flavour intensity was medium with black pepper, plum, blackberry jam, herbaceousness, and sweet oak. The length was medium, slightly high in alcohol.
The wine is good. Good structure on the palate between tannin, acidity, and body. Shows moderate youthful complexity. The alcohol was out of balance (high), and lacked further concentration and complexity.

still good, but not as vibrant as previous vintages. In fact, it was slightly flat in the mid-palate. Decent fruit, a bit of cola and a bit of oak. Could be less than a perfect bottle, but a slight disappointment.

An easy drink with a forward fruity character but not much complexity. Drank the bottle over three days and the fruit opened up more with each day. I may have overpaid for this ($16) and figure I'd be more enthusiastic about it cost only $12. Glad to have tried it.

Pop and pour; beautiful clear, ruby color; nose of bright red fruit, slight smokiness, and cola...actually, quite a bit of cola; palate of strawberry, bramble fruit, graphite, cream soda, and tobacco; soft tannins which allows for an overall sweetness to shine through that draws you back for another taste; medium plus finish.
After having the 2010 El Nido Clio earlier in the year I feel safe in saying this wine is a junior version. This is not as structured and doesn't offer the various layers of flavors as the Clio (which has a healthy portion of Cabernet) but it is none the less delicious and a great QPR for the $12 I paid. I will definitely buy a few more bottles.
Solid value. Medium nose dominated by dark fruit, with slight game and earth hiding in the background. Jammy taste with a short finish that quickly yields to grippy tannins that aren't integrated, otherwise would score higher.

A very enjoyable Spanish red monastrell (which I found out is the same as Mourvedre). Loads of black fruit, tobacco, subtle spice, medium tannins and a good finish. Great QPR.

Popped and poured this one. I agree with Vinatelia's comments entirely. I was struck by the concentration and depth of this wine. What was particularly enjoyable was the nose of roasted fruit and tobacco with just a hint of cola behind it. Very jammy on the palate without much structure at this point. It is certainly a crowd-pleaser, yet not my personal preference for style. You could practically bathe in this at this price.

Dark cherry, with garnet rim and medium-high robe.
On the nose, it shows dark fruit and roasted aromas at first. Later on, red and black fruit, smoked, herbaceous and balsamic aromas, spices, and hints of minerals.
On the palate it´s smooth, tasteful, fruity and smoked. At first it shows herbaceous aromas, and fills the palate with its structure. It´s full-bodied, and its finish is very long, with spices and hints of roasted aromas.

Drank at Iberica Had from Magnum. Monastrell grapes from 40 year old vines from chalky rocky limestone soils in a very hot southern region of Spain. Deep purple with a nose of red berries and smoke. Silky smooth well integrated tannins with a medium length. Very nice.

Part of a comparison tasting of 3 wines under $17. Poured through a Vinturi. Deep garnet and medium bodied. Aromas of black cherry, blackberry, blueberry, toast, vanilla, and cinnamon. Flavors of black currant, blackberry, crème brûlée, and hints of almond and peppery spice. Smooth silky tannins with a long finish. This wine is unbelievable at $11.98, but with price out the window, still the WOTN hands down!

First swirl only gave off a rather restrained nose, and first sip was equally mild...but good. Soft tannins that slip off the tongue smoothly. Yeah, this is one reason why I bought this one. A bit of air does exactly what it should...made a nice wine all the nicer! Drink, drink and be merry! Love this!

Smokey, meaty, mineral and red fruit nose. Palate shows cherry, licorice, and plenty of spice, though is a little hollow on the mid-palate and it's DOA on the finish. Elegant and balanced, and very far from being overdone as one might expect from a Spanish wine at this price range. Solid value.

Of the 3 recent Spanish wines that I've had this is by far the best. The bottle is massive, especially for a $12 bottling. Big wine as well. Loads of dark red/black fruits. Think very ripe raspberries and black raspberries. There's some tar and licorice. Good balance. Not hot despite a reported 15% alcohol. I don't get that alcohol level. This is worthy of a repurchase.

It was best on night one, very jammy and fruit forward, but with some nice tar and earthy notes. On night two most of the complexity faded into the background but sweet, Australian-shiraz like fruit bomb. Alcohol is really evident on night two as well (label says 15%). I am a Juan Gil fan - good value - but this one needs to be drunk in one night for the most enjoyment.

Vuelta Espagnol - Spanish grape varieties/regions tasting (Palma de Mallorca): During an organized Spain tasting. Very expressive nose of raspberry, plum, fig, raisin with medicinal and distinctive black tea notes. I love the nose, southern but complex. Very fruit forward on the palate with silky tannins and good balance. A very good non-animalic version of Mourvedre, bright on the fruit, especially for the price.

- Garnet color with medium forming legs and aromas of black currant, dusty and alcohol. It's balanced and has flavours of black currant, black pepper and cloves with a full body. Round texture with a long finish - After decanting for 1-2 hours, this wine opens up to a symphony of flavors. Caresses the palate with cedar and spice and the finish is one lengthy spice box. QPR is outstanding as the wine performs above its price point. Makes you want to explore other wines from Juan Gil!

Dark garnet; cool nose of French oak, fresh blueberry, and menthol; soft, velvety, weighty, dark fruit, plush; nice. Tasty and round but not as smokey and characteristically monastrell as it was in past vintages.

First time trying the 2010 version of this wine, but have found previous vintages quite reliable. On the nose, dark fruits, creme, and a bit of spice. The palate follows as expected from the nose, with lots of black and red fruit, vanilla creme, and some hints of spice. This has nice body and a velvety mouthfeel, with just enough acidity to keep if from being gloppy. Most notable to me is what I did not find in here at this price point: this is not oaky tasting and there is no heat at all despite the 15% alcohol (at least this is the case when drunk at 55-60 deg). Tanzer's comment about finishing sweetness is right on, but it doesn't come across as artificially sugarified either (as compared to something like Menage a Trois or Coppola Rosso). Let's be real: this is not a wine that is gonna make you think deeply. But it is delicious to quaff, and would be a great wine to serve at parties. It will appeal to the wine newbies and even the wine snobs will not scoff at it. And at $9.99, back up the truck! Tremendous value. People who are paying $6.99 to drink YellowTail or $8.99 to drink Menage a Trois ought to spend a couple more bucks and drink wine like this. The tannins are soft on this and it is ready to drink for sure. I think it will be fine in a cool cellar for 2-3 years but this is not anything to age for long. Pop and pour and enjoy. I'll be buying some more

Black licorice, dark berries, with an underlying herbal quality. It hides the alcohol decently (not seeming unbalanced) but it is noticeably present and powerful.

Subdued aroma of dark fruits, leather, and spice...light floral notes as well.
On the palate, the same elements carry through...It is fruit forward, not overdone but borderline for my palate...spice...dark chocolate...fairly dry finish...needs food.
I am looking forward to trying it tomorrow and see how it develops on day 2. Will issue a score afterwards.
All in all, a positive initial impression for given price point.
UPDATE - Agree with other reviewers...better integrated and balanced on day 2...lost some of the fruit candy and dryness on the finish...89+...Great QPR

This was one of the 1st Spanish wines I had early on that I really enjoyed. I grabbed a btl to revisit after all these years. On night one this very weedy, with some red and blue fruits, hints of wood and a bit disjointed. But on night 2 this was reduced blackberries, hints of chalk, earth and teeth staining richness. Very enjoyable on night two so I would definitly suggest a long decant.

Nose: This is more on the extracted side with tones of dark red fruits, black fruits, and spice tones.
Taste: Medium bodied with lower acidity. This doesn't come off as extracted on the palate as nose with tones of dark red fruits, black fruits, and spices.
Overall: This eases up on the palate and doesn't come off as overblown.

Drank at Iberica
Had from Magnum.
Monastrell grapes from 40 year old vines from chalky rocky limestone soils in a very hot southern region of Spain.
Deep purple with a nose of red berries and smoke. Silky smooth well integrated tannins with a medium length. Very nice.

This wine is consistently solid - over many vintages. The 2010 continues this solid history.
Well balanced with raspberry, cherry and vanilla with a medium/full body. Smooth polished texture with a solid finish
Great QPR for a daily drinker/cellar defender.

Decanted for about an hour.

Taste: Medium bodied with lower acidity. This doesn't come off as extracted on the palate as nose with tones of dark red fruits, black fruits, and spices.
Overall: This eases up on the palate and doesn't come off as overblown.

Visual:
