Blind, 3 hour decant. Medium ruby in the glass......
I think the 3 hour decant hurt it. I could not identify it as a Pinot. Came across kinda old cab like to me. Nose was rather muted and unremarkable. Quality winemaking, but I can't tell you any other big note to it. Admittedly, it was the 11th of 14 wines on the night.

My last note on this (back in 2002) mentioned how closed it was and to revisit in 5 years. Well, it has been 21 years now and the wait was worth it. Just a lovely node of red fruits, florals and minerals. The structure was smooth as silk and the finish velvety and lingering. This just floated on the palate. Tough to imagine this getting better, but I doubt it will fall off the cliff anytime soon.

Chez Winefool Goodbye Dinner (Chicago, IL): 88/90/97 flight. An excellent vintage at Jadot where they over-performed by a wide margin, but this wasn't as complete or interesting as 88 or 90. Ripe but well-contained fresh fruit is less energetic and nuanced as the other two vintages. A very good wine, but not at the level of 90 for sure.

The End of Winefoolishness in Chicago (Hughes House - Chicago IL): Rich and well spiced, this is another Jadot success in the problematic 1997 vintage, fresh enough to support the considerable opulence. Very good concentration with enough structure. Still drinking wonderfully, but clearly no further upside.

Grand Crus > 20 years CT gathering at IT-SPDP. Tasted blind. Drank in Grassl Cru. Appearance some fine sediment, pale intensity, ruby colour with garnet rim. Legs. Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of earth, clayey stones minerality, dark red cherries, black cherries. Developing. On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium alcohol (13.5%), structured medium+ tannins, full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of dark red cherries, black cherries, strong earth, dark clay, stony minerality. Long finish. Excellent quality. Quite a beast of a Grand Cru Pinot package. Good stuff. Would never have guessed 1997 without the hints. Bravo Jadot in 1997. Other 97 Jadots greats I have tasted so far are Cazetiers, Corton-Pougets, and Beaune Ursules - all courtesy of Asparagus.

Grand Crus > 20 years: Strong coffee notes on the nose and it had such vibrant, powerful dark red fruit so my first instinct was a 1999 Laurent. But once it was revealed to be an off-vintage, 1997 Jadot was an easy guess. Had a wonderful density with a certain regal nature under the hood - very much an iron fist in velvet glove kind of wine. My WOTN.

Dinner with the wine group (Cindy's Place): Stood up for 2+ weeks, sediment decanted off. Light ruby, age-appropriate bricking; aromatic, mature red fruits, some mulch and forest floor; light bodied, elegant strawberry and red fruits, medium 13.5% alcohol, medium-plus acidity to balance well, a hint of deeper density but largely elegant, not particularly long on the finish but well balanced. Comparable to my last bottles, will definitely open up a little bit with air. 92 for now. Few hours double decanted: integrated well, lovely balance of elegant red fruits with now a bit more tannin and muscularity. Nice showing, though admittedly a bit pricey now for its quality.

Very open for business - strong bouquet of rose petal, plum, cherry, meat stock, wet earth, fallen leaves, and soy sauce. On the palette it is very silky and smooth, with plums, soy sauce, eucalyptus, and cherry notes. Very good acidity and pretty long finish. Very enjoyable - great wine!

From a producer whose 1997s are usually very much unlike 1997s, this one opens up more in line with what you'd expect to get out of a hot vintage, with raisined and figgy aromas and a big blast of fruit. It takes a bit of time in the decanter to settle down and civilize itself but eventually the sur-maturite dials itself back to something nice and plummy, though still quite deep in complexion, and even the mouthfeel slims down to something borderline feminine and refined.

Birthday Dinner (Home, Millbrae): 1oz of settled sediment. Light ruby, some bricking expected for age though overall youthful color; nose is expressively aromatic with red fruit, strawberry, bramble, forest floor; palate is light bodied, transparent pure red fruit but with a hint of density on the palate, nice depth, integrated tannins, medium-plus acidity, persistent through the midpalate but not perpetually after; finish is medium length. I think a nice Bonnes Mares with a transparency of fruit but with a density to the palate which is enjoyable. The complexity is fairly good, the length could be a bit longer. I think this is really enjoyable and at maturity now, will drink well for 5-8 years. 93 Day 2: Definitely a bit of oxidation in this glass, but it still shows pretty good complexity. I wouldn't recommend this much air, but it shows that the underlying quality of the wine is pretty good.

Wow! THIS is why I love burgundy.... red and dark cherries, dirt, and a lovely spearmint on the nose and pallet. Continued to evolve over a couple of hours in the decanter. New Year's Day, 2018 - Pokai Parera (Ekatahuna, New Zealand): Profound wine that is all about iron grip, intensity, and a tight inner core of fruit that just goes on and on. At 21 years of age (just), this is complex, refined, but absolutely backwards (counter to the general style of the vintage). Light ruby with age-appropriate bricking for 20 years; nose is aromatic, plenty of forest floor and mulch but with a strong undercurrent of balanced red fruit, not quite chewy black cherry; palate is light bodied, plenty of red fruit throughout, acidity is high but not annoyingly so and with the fruit to balance it, tannins are still present but integrating and not overly harsh; finish is medium-long. Overall an excellent 20-year old burgundy, maybe lacking only a bit of distinction for a grand cru but also seems at a very early plateau. It may develop nicely over the next 5-10 years, though I'm hoping the fruit doesn't drop out and leave only the acid. For now, nice balance of acid and richly textured fruits. 92 Holding up well and opening up more over 1-2 hours. A bit more chewy black cherry on the nose and palate. Nice, high acid. Won't ever be superb, but enjoyable.

Opened last night. Ruby core with lighter edge. High toned, stemmy nose with fennel. Riper, rounder, and more chocolatey than the '01 Potel. Very earthy black fruit, some green herb, and aggressive acidity that doesn't feel fully folded into the wine. Stalky, tannic finish, somewhat jarring to taste now. Lots of remnant structure, but will it ever totally harmonize?
Jadot 1997 Dinner: A Jacques Lardière Miracle (RPM Steak - Chicago IL): Open 2 hours (with a quick double decant) before serving in Jadot 1997 Chambolle flight (yes, I know this contains some MSD fruit). Very powerful and ripe black fruit with intense concentration from beginning to end. Great balance as well. Very long finish. Great when poured, even slightly better a few hours later. The best I can ever recall for this wine, it still might have upside from here. My favorite Wine of the Night by a very slight margin.

Ruby red with bricking around the edges. Classic burgundy aromas of red berries, mocha, meat, earth and wood spice. Ripe and sweet on the palate with crushed red berries, soil tones, savory brown spices, medium acidity and a long (violets + sandalwood) perfumed finish. Beautifully aged 20 year old burg.

Light red with some maturity. Nose: Incredibly Bgn with the inimitable maturity aromas of cold cuts and medium aggressive cheese. Mouth: Superbly balanced and I agree with what Paul S suggests: Early plateau with upside for keepers. It's layered and complex, transparent and true to its terroir. This one has a good dose of tannins. What it lacks, is that it's a good deal watery for my palate, and the price it commands is just insane. Not for my funds.
But, for Burgheads, this wine is probably worth emptying your wallet for and also waiting 3-4 years for.

1997 Burgundy Grand Cru Dinner (Imperial Treasure Super Peking Duck, Paragon): A really nice way to start off the reds - this was a very good Bonnes Mares at a nice place, where it still seemed youthful, but was already very rewarding to drink. It had a lovely, lush nose, with sweet notes of blueberries and violets wed to a nice touch of earth and spice. Very pretty. The palate still had a good bit of structure to it, with slightly powdery tannins that seem to be in the process of smoothing out into a more velvety feel. In fact, I thought this had a nicely effortlessly elegance for a Jadot. There was some extraction and an underlying strength that was befitting of the terroir, but the wine was certainly very controlled, showing a nice purity to its dark cherries and sappy blueberry tones, along with a nice earthiness on the midpalate and a strong finish that married sweet blueberry fruit to a nice dose of Morey spice. Lovely stuff, and while drinking nicely, I think it will be even better in say 4-5 years' time.

The wine is starting to come around. A lovely colour, with hints of brick at the rim. Clear and lush. A gorgeous nose of undergrowth and red fruits. On the palate, the acidity still dominates a little, but the wine is well on the way to being integrated. It will be totally awesome in another 3 years IMHO.

Medium garnet core, wid pale garnet rim. Developed nose showing sweet red fruit, lots of spice, chalky mineral notes and a touch of sous-bois. Medium bodied on the palate, with softened tannins, decent acidity, sweet red fruit, spice, hint of undergrowth. Mellow and harmonious if not hugely deep or long.

Medium garnet. Perfumed, fragrant if only modestly intense nose showing sweet, slightly bruised strawberry fruit, floral notes and hints of earth. Very mellow on the palate with more of that fragrant, perfumed fruit, also gently spicy even slightly licoricey notes, moderate well integrated tannins and then slightly subuded acidity on a savoury, smooth medium length finish. Classy, if slightly short on concentration and volume for something at this level - wouldn't say this was for the long haul.

Charity tasting at CWC (Raleigh, NC): Plum to salmon, looking a little tired. Deep black cherry fruit with some herbs and a little dried earth coming in with some air. Medium bodied and very well knit-together on the palate. Just a touch of very fine tannins remaining. The finish is slightly bitter, not super long, but shows some good complexity. This is very good rather than amazing and a bottle I would love to spend an evening with and get to know.

Decanted 2 hours. Lush, ripe red fruit aromas with cocoa and fresh tarragon. Red and black cherry on palate also showing chocolate in background. None of the roasted character found in too many 97s. After 2 hours in the decanter this beauty showed a medium-dark red color with beginning signs of maturity, yet lacking clarity. An excellent nose with lots of layers - from redberries to mint. Sweet, ripe fruit on the palate with potiential for even more. Drinking well now, but you can easily put this aside for 4-5 years. The group's Wine Of The Night. 50+3+14+19+9 = 95

Seattle Tasting Group 'End of Year Dinner' #3 (Sammamish, WA): Slight notes of caramel with some sour cherry and then increasing notes of dill on the nose. There is a certain heaviness to the aromatics, and by comparison to the other two wines in the flight it is ponderous. The palate features new-world levels of extraction with some black cherry and some leafy/dill notes.

Casual Dinner with Friends (Smyth - Chicago IL): Open 2+ hours before serving with a quick double decant. Mostly black fruit with floral hints and meaty spice. Dense and very concentrated with mostly fresh fruit. Very good now with upside from here. Almost as good as the 1993 in the next glass, but perhaps with better longer-term potential.

Drank at a blind tasting, gave it 80 p and my only notes were nose = almost nonexistent, taste = watery and savourless. Everybody else at the tasting liked it much better, PN is definitely my grape and I should stay away from burgs.

Pinot noir extravaganza (Stockholm, Sweden): One whiff and this was noted as a Bgn PN.

Lovely nose of berries and underwood. Clean and lean, nice acidity and a pure core. Pleasing, lengthy finish. Has some years left.

Really underwhelming wine - aromatics were nice...but the palate fell off on the back end and the finish was quite short. Outclassed by various 1er cru at the same event.

For the first time this wine tasted like a more typical 97, a hot year. I have had a dozen which were great and this was quite nice but a little cloying. Hope it's the only one

Let breathe for 2.5 hours and drank over another 2 hours. This wine is complex, rich with deep cherry and leather. It has a long way to go, but is excellent now, especially with the aeration.

Let breathe for an hour but reach its apex at 2 to 2.5 hours. Starts out bright, tart cherry and matures into smooth, complex with deep cherry undertones. This is a great wine and a great value.

Let breathe up for 1 hour. Wine starts to sing at 2 to 2.5 hours as tart cherry melts into rich, concentrated cherry and earthy undertones fill out this multilayered, complex wine with a long, long finish. Always a pleasure.

Red-ruby color, Superripe aromas of dark fruits and , mocha ad spices; verging on roasted. In the mouth its all size, power, richness and density plus outstanding length balancced by amazing levels of sap. This is a full, rich delightful wine that is drinking very well now and will for many years. Powerful, if not elegant

Beautiful wine, and best after three or four hours of air. Fragrant with sweet baking scents like gingerbread cookie dough baking in the oven. Round, streamlined, sappy palate presence, a graceful form with layers of richness and no hard edges.

Lots of acidity, tannin and power emerge from middle to very long finish. Just now approaching its peak drinking window.
