Closed on the nose, intensively spicy, restrained fruit. Marked acidity but yet balance with thick and fine grained tannins. Heavy body and muscular. Typical Roty which normally a sommelier’s mission impossible. Opened 5 hours in advance, double decanted and then put the cork back.

Mixed 1985 Dinner (Amali): Brooding, dark, dirty, intense. Comparable with past bottles, but this was showing young and with less ripeness to the black fruit. Very gritty. Still has the damp leather and spent coffee grinds. Massive structure and not convincing that there is underlying fruit to balance out... This was the first wine of the after-hours flight with Kemo Sabe and Hamburgler, and probably should have been the last.

Hawaiian Escape; 11/19/2016-11/26/2016 (Kuki'o): Dark blackberry and black cherry fruit on the nose. Brooding and heavily earth driven. Thick and a little dirty on the palate wth mature black fruit and more developed coffee ground notes and rich soil. Comparable to past experience with this wine, but a less impressive showing this time around. Still solid.

Ten Days in Burgundy, Champagne, and Paris; 6/24/2016-7/6/2016: Very ashy with lots of scorched earth. Mushrooms and damp soil too. Tertiary and mature. Another after dinner wine without great notes, but really enjoyed this. Loads of advanced flavour.

Popped and poured at home on a lazy sunday night. Bottle in good condition. This is starting to enter its "zone" but needs an hour or two of air to get there. Will probably improve over the next 5 years. Lots of sediment: may make sense to let bottles stand for a week or two before opening.
It's a relatively fulsome mature burg: meat, iron, rose petals, tea leaves. Hedonistic. Long. Very well made.

Medium red in color with slight brownish rim. Nose of black tea and quite meaty flavors, medium palate with quite a bit of fruit still intact. The nose is showing better than the palate which isnt showing as much depth as the nose.

Opened at a dinner at Bay Wolf. Medium red; quite intense and initially spicy with some residual tannins. This was typically Gevrey but more intense than Charmes; lovely wine which evolved during the evening and clearly has more tiime to develop further. Not as sweet as the 64 Leroy which we had with this but a wine which has more stuffing and complexity.

Murky and deep on nose, lots of spices and meat. Similar on palate - excellent entry of meats and spices. Plush w soft tannins still present. Sauvage and dirt aspects. Delicious. Solid chewy finish. Old style burg. Nose: 6/6, Palate: 6/6, Finish: 5/6, Je ne sais quoi (wild card): 2/2 = 19/20 = 98/100. Thanks to Josh K!

La Paulee Gala (New York, NY): Very ripe black fruit aromas with a smoky, gamy character. Slightly backward and well structured black cherry and blackberry also on palate. Probably just entering its peak drinking window.

Another Casual Burgundy Dinner (Oceanique - Evanston IL): Really impressive alongside its 1985 counterpart. Rich fruit on nose and palate. Lots of oak more obvious on nose. Powerful black fruit nicely complemented by emerging secondary development, so I'd say this wine is just barely starting to enter its prime, much further behind most 1989s. Black fruit has a nice smoky character to it, then some good spice really comes through on long finish.
