as before, much more enjoyable on night 2. aromatics for days. rich, concentrated, chocolate covered berries, touch of saline, medium tannic backbone. this wine makes me wanna open (way too early) other novy syrahs because I just can't believe how tasty they are.

Day 1 tasted blind and thought without a doubt this was an old world red. Tons of aromatics, minerality, tight on opening. Day 2 was an about-face: black fruits, milk chocolate, with a tad of bitter tannin at the end. I love dyslexic wines. :) Novy syrahs are so under rated.

Day one after pop and pour the wine is hot and unbalanced. We recorked (rescrewed?) the bottle and put it back in the fridge. Day two yields a much more complex, savory and balanced wine. Great QPR, but the 24 hour decant makes all the difference.

Anise, briney dark fruit, smoke, earth, more of a cool climate Syrah. Great QPR for less than $20. Day 2 update. This has turned into an awesome wine. It has deepened, added a tobacco/tar element and the nose is much more fragrant. I am actually taken back by how much a day has changed this one. Up 3 points. I recommend more cellar time, a slow in bottle oxidation or a long decant.

California Wine Fair - Toronto, ON (Fairmont Royal York): I was hoping for a more Northern Rhone expression and was a bit dissapointed. Pours fully opaque, quite dark with fruit predominantly in the black spectrum. I found this modern leaning with more emphasis on the fruit though some background caper/tar/brine notes did add to overall complexity. Also on the nose: blackberry and cassis. Palate is very dense, ripe and extracted with a slightly short finish.

This drank great with a twist and pour. Adam got some good pepper into this one and while there is enough acid, it also shows some good plushness, too. Great QPR syrah again this vintage.

2011 Novy SLH Syrahs--A Test Drive Through The Big 5; 5/15/2013-6/8/2013: Really dark. Started out early tasting like a barrel sample, as the fruit was pulled back and some new mocha oak was quite dominant. At this stage, a more fruit centric version of the cuvee, although with air and time there is nice Rosella's citrus in here, and some of the sexy Susan's too I would guess. Lots of blue fruit, sweet leather, dark chocolate. This is a first glass (one hour of aeration) pass, so we'll try it again tomorrow....with a full day of slox ox, the aeration helped bring out further complexity. A reminder of the important role of aeration for really enjoying wines that need this advantage. The air adds a light whiff of SLH pepper to the aromatic but the real gain here is the palate, where a juicy core is now added, replacing all that oak signature from yesterday, which has now disappeared. Leathery tannin, a mix of red and black fruit versus the blue of yesterday and tasting overall more youthful with good richness. Still gettting the Rosella's grapefruit and Susan's decadence in the finish, too, along with tar. Overall, a good blend cuvee, as it is every year.

Yum. Firm, olive, meat, dark fruit, and overall a big extracted wine with a nice sense of balance. Great stuff.

Big, dense wine. Very nice. Blackberry, cherry, vanilla, a bit of herbs, overall quite delicious. Drink now or later.
