  • 12.5% alcohol. The cork is of medium length but of vg quality; penetrated by wine a quarter of the way on average. Light colour with significant thinning at the rim (no bricking though).
There is a lovely cherry aspect to the nose; very pure with no sign of oak. Some tertiary aromas start to develop. Equally harmonious and red fruited in the mouth with great liveliness and vg length.
Highly satisfying for those who believe that Pinot Noir is at its best when it displays delicacy and elegance rather than power or lushness.
Pretty affordable when I bought it, no idea of current prices.

  • Another bottle. Notes as previously. Held up well over three evenings in its savoury, earthy, nicely evolved style. Now drinking on its optimal plateau until around 2028+.

  • Drinking similarly to in my previous TNs. Red fruited, earthy, savoury and attractively evolved. Dry brush and dried herbs. Well balanced. Racy acidity. A bit of feral, sous bois, very dry, nothing sweet. Tannins nicely resolved and reasonable alcohol (12.5% ABV). I don’t think it will improve from here. On the other hand there is no imminent danger of it suddenly falling over. Drink by something like 2028.

  • Light ruby with a little garnet and watery at the rim. Raspberries, red cherries, dried herbs, tobacco smoke and red plums. Light bodied, pleasantly lean and savoury. Clean and dry with fresh acids. Fine, refined tannins, now well integrated. Also now - seemingly - drinking in its prime, over the next 8-10 or so years, I suspect. A lovely Mercurey Villages from a top vintage.

  • Cherries, plumbs, tobacco, hint of licorice and earth. Delicious and ready for drinking. Should last at least another 5 years but prob much more

  • Drunk over two days over which it improved. It needed a good 2+ hours air to open up. Ruby moving garnet with a clear rim. A musky bouquet of mainly red cherries and some plums, dried herbs, peaty soil and some cigar. In the mouth, a savoury, earthy, dry entry. Cherries, plums and some other dark red fruit, dry underbrush and black tea. There is also a minty green note, which adds interest, as does some attractive tobacco leaf development. Lower, but sufficient, acidity. Tannins now fully resolved. Good length, if finishes bone dry. Great QPR, back in the day. Now in its optimal drinking window, but no hurry needed.

Drink up.

  • The wine is drinking well and has nice black cherry fruit and little bit of mint and good minerality. The tannins and acidity are in balance and the wine has a medium finish.

  • This is an enjoyable Mercurey with black cherry fruit, a hint of mint, minerality, and good acidity. It is not a rich wine, but one with a dry and mineral finish to it.

  • Classically styled and so elegant and articulative of place, especially for a villages level Mercurey. The nose is lovely, with cherry, flower, and spice aromas that show traces of pencil shavings and smoke. The palate doesn't feel resolved as of yet, but it does show lovely volume and weight, with youthful grip, and plenty of cut to the black raspberry and hibiscus flavors. It probably needs a bit more cellaring as it fleshes out and opens up nicely after a few hours.

  • I am happy to report that this bottle was much better than the last one I drank. Must be some bottle variation. The wine has a light red color; and the nose has hints of red violets. On the palate it has light red cherries and some spice with a light to medium body. On the finish, however, it is a little hollow on the mid-palate. I agree that is has somewhat low acidity, with light red fruit and light tannins.

  • I generally like this wine, but I like the 2011 version better. Having said that, this one has a beautiful light red color and it was very aromatic when first opened. It has light cherry fruit, some green tea, minerality, spice and acidity that seems to be a little bit elevated.

  • Richer burgundy than most Mercurey's that I have tasted; nice warm ripe red berry flavors; good dry finish.

  • Bought this and was given a warning that the acidity here made it a bad candidate for early drinking. Oh well. The acidity is definitely there, although it doesn't preclude enjoyment any more than any other young Burg I've tried. Really pretty, earthy nose with a ton of leather on the palate and nose--especially on Day 2. This is clearly quite young, and I'll bet this will drink crazy well in 2-5 years, but it really is tasty now too.

  • Jolie robe rubis clair, brillante.

  • COlor: Dark garnet with amber hue. Aroma: MInt, damp forest, hints of cranberry, eucalyptus and licorice. Little closed-in. Palate Entry: Acidic tannin, citrusy. Mid-Palate: Alcoholic hot, smooth tannins. FInish: Iron, tannin, meaty, citrusy and licorice. Medium+ body and acidity, low- sugar. Little closed-in right now, clumsy and tannic, try again in a few more years.

89+ pts

  • 2012 A. et P. de Villaines: a good vintage: Colour nice ruby, a little lighter. Beetroot, stewed plums and a little spice on the nose on opening. With time raspberries, cherries and cranberries, also earth and a slightly feral, mushroomy element I like and some crushed dried herbs. Polished dark cherries with some grip on the mid and back palate. Some tannins but they are small and spherical. The acidity provides some tartness but overall this is quite voluptuous. Good fruit weight and structure. Energetic. Drink now or hold medium term. The best of the reds.

  • Very pretty wine with waves of sweet cherry fruit. There's a little flora and chalky tannins underpin all of the flesh. It finishes with some savoury traits and the overall package is well balanced with excellent poise.
