Upon opening we had a slight mishap with the cork, but we decided to go ahead anyway and thankfully there was no real issue.
Much darker and closed than the Clos du Chateau upon opening (and we opened it at the same time) - this needed the air to open up and start showing its beauty. Still structured and I'd say tight, and I feel that this was still slightly too young to enjoy properly. This will become a better wine than the CdC alongside it, but needs more time to age. I see upside, and would love to revisit in 3+ years to see where it's at.
A pleasure to drink with Steen & M in Burgundy - already looking forward to the return.

Shared w/ friends and the inimitable Neal Rosenthal in NYC. For me WOTN, closely beating out the '95 Rene Engel Clos de Vougeot and a notable style evolution next to the '09 CLB Chaumes. This is oh so Louis-Michel - big and flamboyant with an absolute kaleidoscope of aromas underpinned by an unmistakable Vosne earthiness stepping into some Asian spice notes of raw star anise. Microscopic tannins grip on for minutes and the weight and substance is something to marvel at. Peak CLB, peak Vosne, peak Burg.

Side by side 07 Reignots (which probably wasn't the best of bottles) this 12 showed really well as always with it's sexy dark cherry fruit with immense intensity, great balance though no heat, super energy and minerality. What was maybe a bit surprising that it felt like it shut down with air as the evening went on. So I would probably think it's time to let those slumber for a few years if you have them.

Everything is restrained and delicate. Be careful or you’ll miss it all. A touch rustic barnyard, bit of graham cracker, white lillies and a sprinkling of rose water. No real fruit to speak of, perhaps a touch of cran-raspberry. Shutdown perhaps?

Loads of Asian spice to the nose. There are perfectly ripe raspberry and cherry fruits too. The palate is velvety and rich, layered and long. It has ripe tannins and is flecked with mineral notes. The finish expands and drives on and on. Not a hair out of place and still very youthful.

Bottle 1019/1761. My fourth time with this wine which is always an immense privilege to taste. On pnp immense fruit intensity in the blue spectrum, there is this other dimension immediatly apparent with pronounced umami notes I associate almost more with La Romanee and this firecracker notes almost sweaty horse that render this utterly complete quite frankly and this particular bottle blind I could take as a Romanee ringer. The level of spice is crazy too, and it has this acidic spine that keep the lush fruit in perfect check. It’s definitely a mini Romanee plus although the mini is too belittling as this wine is simply wow. A small sip left in the glass for two hours shows great evolution and absolutely no thinning of the palate whatsoever, it is a testament to the wines age worthyness which I have hear bad tongues question in relation to CLB. Yes, they are great young but no I don’t think they won’t age. Could nose this all day long. My thoughts while savouring this are with the late Claude Matignoles whom I owe the pleasure of having been able to drink the very best bottles of CLB. You will be missed.

A total stunner of a wine - my third encounter with this beauty and here at a dinner with Louis-Michel a real priviledge to savour together among others with the Eche 12. The Reignots is overtly dark fruited, spicy, suave but deep. Simply sublime juice that should be incredible with another 5 years of age.

The 2012 Comte Liger Belair Aux Reignots can easily put up a good fight next to many Vosne Romanee Grand Crus. Gorgeous rose petals and dark cherry fruits with a saline backbone. Rich and intense with Grand Cru intensity and fragrant. Dark and concentrated yet airy with a refreshing minerality on the mid-palate. This will age for decades. (95/100)

During a weekend of wonderful wines and one of threes CLB Reignots (with 07 and 08). The 12 was visually the only wine that appeared fined and filtered whereas the 07 and 08 were really quite raw/unfiltered in appearance, the 12 also was markedly darker in colour. On the nose it was more muscular than the older siblings, much more dark fruited, silky and seamless mouthfeel. With air it come into its own to reveal that extra dimension and umami that I often associate with this vineyard and CLB offering. A wine that is already great but will no doubt reach even higher heights with another 5 years or so +. Very very impressive stuff.

In a line-up of four Reignots the 2012 was one of the stars (for me just behind 07 and just ahead of 05). It was definitely the most Liger Belair signature style in terms of how glossy and immediate and silky integrated oaked it was. Bags of very dark cherry fruit and good mineral cut with a long finish. I preferred the transparency and higher pitch of the 07 maybe as in side by side comparisons one is critical but that is not to take anything away from this masterpiece. A wine that should be even better in 5-10 years time but is giving enormous pleasure already today.

A nice, calm and even nose, still showing youthful red and black fruits along with a suggestion of beef stock development. It is rich and sweet in the mouth with nice minerally detail to the back-end.

Liger Belair Dinner: Sultry exotic spice aromas, a bit of sauvage, macerated cherry, black fruits. This is so complete. In time some jasmine notes emerged. Very impressive, and delightful to drink at this youthful stage but undoubtedly there's a long life ahead of this wine.

Tasted in a CLB Reignots vertical with the 02’, 07’ and the 2016, the 12’ Reignots stood out for its completeness. Basically came away saying the same thing I did at La Paulee four years ago, there isn’t much room for a better young Burgundy. Such a beautiful wine that has a lot going for it in all the right proportions.
So firm, refined and precise. A bit more wood showing on the nose and palate, but it is fine, fine oak and by no means too much, adding good tannin and spice accents. There’s excellent freshness through the palate, touch of herbs and soil, with great refined dark red fruit and complex spice. So fine and graceful through the finish, there’s good moderate power but it also carries good elegance, very well controlled for the vintage and house. Laser focused, picking up intensity on the finish as it opens. While I haven’t had the opportunity to taste the La Romanee yet, the 12’ Reignots is right near the pinnacle of what I look for in Burgundy. If anything were missing, perhaps it’s a bit of soul, as it moves in a machine like manner. Perhaps with time, as the 07’ was in a more showy and expressive state.

Vibrant ruby. Stunning aromatic that soaring from the glass, like walking at the spice garden or Indian spice shop. Along with complex blue fruits and violets. CLB to me is always the freshness and zen like harmony on the palate. Not necessary the power but it has lovely layers of flavours that caresses the palate with silky, sophisticated tannin and rounded acidity for the tension. A great wine. Maybe just me, but I find that the aromatic is so ultra gorgeous that the palate is trying hard to match up.

Quite compact, tight and intense. There’s a whiff of ginger, compost, red currant and rose petal. It is silky in the mouth with great line. It builds and is expansive on the finish. Fabulous wine but needs a few more years in the cellar.

2016 Villa d’Este Wine Symposium - Kelly, Alan and Kevin's excellent adventure; 11/3/2016-11/12/2016 (Villa D’este, Lake Como, Piedmont, Milan and Frankfurt): It is always fascinating and educational to re-taste in the bottle. Very pure and decadent nose displaying cool blue fruit, lavender and rose, delicate sweet spices, mocha, black truffle and Vosne spices. Beautifully balanced palate, pure and precise, pure fresh blueberry and a hint of oak driven palate impression, perfect amount of acidity and tannins and a long seamless finish with Vosne spice at the end. The expression is already quite complex for such a young wine. So delicious already but will require another ten to fifteen years to reach the peak.

Tasted at the Domaine. Outstanding spice, red and black fruit along with a rhubarb note on the palate. Very ripe, spectacular balance and a nice long finish. Clearly more structured and depth than the Clos du Chateau, but a different flavor profile.

Showing incredible complexity and explosiveness, this was the most impressive wine at La Paulee's grand tasting. If the ripe dark red fruit and bold Vosne spices that emerge aren't visceral enough, the tannins and energy on the finish take this into rarified air. For all of it's power and concentration, there's more than a touch of elegance and perfect balance.
2014 La Paulee Grand Tasting (New York): Fairly dark, medium body, beautiful dark, meaty cherry, excellent balance, has an elegance and lightness, though with fabulous flavor.
