A great bottle. A little more body and tannin and darkness to the fruit than a typical Shake Ridge (weighs in at 14.0% alcohol), but that spice from the stems and the juicy fresh whole cluster aroma is still definitely there in the nose, so despite the slightly elevated structure and body, i think a D&R fan would be able to identity this as a D&R wine with just one sniff. Really pretty on the palate, almost cab-like in terms of structure, but the acidity hits you on the mid-palate and the wine remains fresh and lively. So comforting to have something to drink that seems so familiar and yet at the same time surprising with a couple of dinners at home over a pretty bleak weekend in NYC. Makes me think of better days in the past and hope for better ones in the future too.

A few days after having the 2018 Shake Ridge, I went back to 2012. Definitely see the lineage, though the 12 is a heftier wine. Pop n pour, deeper ruby than the 12 in color, a bit of bricking around the edges, a touch hazy. Cedar and lavender-y floral notes on the nose, cherry lozenge poking in. Plenty of body, though nothing overbearing, with prominent maraschino then a bit of pucker on the finish. This is really in harmony right now but can easily go a few more years. Lovely stuff.

Took to dinner at Shakewell with the Elis. Really nails the Mourvedre sauvage ideal. Dark, brambly, leathery, tiny bit bitter. We ordered the fried chicken, but it also paired well with the whole fish and the octopus. Worked well with romesco sauces, hotter things, olive flavors. This is kind of pricy stuff but very satisfying.

*sigh* So I almost hate writing this, as I'm generally a fan of D&R wines and Hardy seems like a really good dude ......but I just didn't love this bottle. It had the really nice, almost ethereal mouthfeel and soft perfumed/red fruited nose that I love about their wines, but the palate was lacking. Faint notes of bitter cherries and maybe a tiny bit of spice, but just not enough there to keep it interesting. I'd actually take the Familiar over this any day of the week, which is not what I expected before popping the bottle. Again, certainly not a 'bad' wine....just not very exciting.

Deep, generous spicy Mourvedre. Powerful stuff, but has a vertical quality which reminds me of the great wines of Bandol. This is certainly fruity, but has a tannic structure which acts as a great counterpoint. Full bodied & showing a rich mouthfeel. This begins to show a subtle savoriness on the mid palate. The wine really hits a rhythm after an hour or so of being open.
Something that I always find impressive is when a bigger wine shows finesse & delicacy. This hits those marks & I think it will be really special with a few years in the bottle. Complex & tasty.

Delicious right out of the bottle. Nice fruit. A little spice. Lighter than expected. Put half of the bottle away. On day two the fruit had completely disappeared. Make sure you finish it all on day one.

PnP. Very primary on opening. Some oak/funk. After 2 hours in the glass, some herbal notes, candied fruits (maybe cough medicine?) and a medium length finish. Would sit on for 3-5 more years.

Very pretty, light, fun wines, though I don't understand the ridiculous amount of hype around these. Very earthy, red and blue-fruited, with a bit of a candied carbonic-like note. Nice medium saline finish. Opens nicely with an hour or two of air, but begins to collapse after a few hours. A Mourvedre-based Beaujolais? Enjoyable, and a solid $20 wine, but this is nearly $40.

Bright red. Candied nose, mineral, saline. Fresh herbs, earth. A very light, red-fruited, unique expression of mourvedre; a bit earthy, with good acid. With some air, it becomes more earthy and herbal, but also fades fairly fast after several hours.

My first Dirty & Rowdy. Certainly, a very different type of Mourvedre. Almost like a natural, carbonic Beaujolais with a bit more earthy character. Quite red-fruited, with some mineral salinity. Pretty, but not earth-shattering.

Light ruby garnet color. Decanted and took an initial taste, then returned to the cellar for about 90 minutes. Initially not giving up much on the nose, slight red fruits, earth, and pine sap, wife says something off but I don't find that. The wine underwent a transformation after time with air - roses and strawberries on the nose, crunchy red fruit palate with herbs de Provence, slight camphor, and peppery, earthy finish. Weightless on the palate with silky texture. Very nice!

Tasting Dirty and Rowdy with Hardy Wallace (Puchdown Cellars - Santa Rosa): Pop-n-pour. Dark ruby color bordering to purple. Floral with baking spice and the smell of freshly tilled soil. This wine has a richness compared to the others in the flight with ripe juicy red and blue fruit and sweet grippy tannins. Right up my alley.
