Much better than my last bottle in 2020, and much to my surprise local and full of character now. What has happened there, or is it my palate that’s getting old and tired. Either way, this came across as the real Neuf deal with great tertiary flavors, and dusty cherry fruit. Will have to go back and check again.

No. This is just so far from what Châteauneuf from 2001 could and should be. I admit I probably kept it for too long, but there’s too much of an effort going on in the cellar, this is polished, modern, uninteresting. There’s a note of licorice that bothers me too. I can’t see myself drinking an entire bottle of this, one small glass is enough.

This bottle is drinking in its prime from my opinion and also Mico tasters opinion. Dark color still in the garnet category. Viscous and Venice. This wine needed a lot of air to open and we didn't have a decanter. Towards the end of the bottle it started to open up with beautiful stewed Grenache fruit. Some depth and backbone and some firm acidity for a chateauneuf-du-pape at this age. there wasn't much wood to this wine but it did stand out towards the end. I would have preferred a little bit more nose but towards the end it started singing. I wish I would have decanted his bottle 4 another 3 hours before writing a TN. Still a fabulous drink with burgers.

First bottle from a case of 12 bought at the domaine. Polished, semi modern Chateauneuf, well made, focused and upright with a good structure. Plenty of fruit left to keep this going. Just a tiny bit boring, however. Where’s the character?

Excellent bottle. Soooooo smooth. There were no outstanding tastes, but this wine was more like a chord in which the individual notes are lost in the total. Pure pleasure. Did not take too long to open up. No decant.

Drinking well now. Fully integrated, nice finish. A little grapey, probably a fruit forward style they were trying to get. Let sit out a couple days and there was not much left so if you have some drink in the next few years.

Dark, somewhat brooding. A rich, full expression of the vintage without the power and depth of Pegau (which it was up against). I found it a very enjoyable bottle and reinforement of the quality across the board in 01. Would be pleased to have this in the cellar.

black-fruited, dense and dark, but without the extra spice and herbal components of the Pegaus tasted at the same dinner. Not an easy competition, though. 90-91 2 nights later this was more animalistic than the previous showing, having gained some red-fruit overtones above the dense black fruit core. More complex, I liked it even more.

I think this wine is in it's peak drinking period now, not that it's going anywhere. I had half the bottle last night, and the rest tonight. Not really much of a change. What I like about this Chateauneuf is that is not grenache dominated, at least on the palate, which too many of the current chateauneuf's are. It's a well balanced wine, decent acidity and great fruit. This will go with any dish that takes a strong red wine. Very versatile.

Friday at the Duck House (Duck House, Montery Park, CA): Ripe juicy nose with notes of burnt brush and a touch of heat. Well balanced palate with a strong tannic finish. Seemed tight initially and would have liked to have spent more time with this one.

NOSE: leather and garrigue; a bit chalky; tight ... initial raspberry aroma dissipated by the time this was poured 5 hours after first opening.
BODY: mahogany color of medium-deep depth; medium-full bodied; some fine particulate matter suspended in the wine
TASTE: very tight right now; primary raspberries and blackberries with a secondary hint of funk; tannic; hot finish; seems closed-down right now. Hold.
B: 50, 5, 12, 15, 8 = 90

Our server recommended this wine with our Rabbit rillette and ribeye of Veal @ Per Se because it has less syrah in the blend than the Prestige. In any event it was again a perfect pairing. The nose is dark berries and the wine is ready to drink now. The finish is long, the tannins well rounded. I loaded up on the Prestige due to the early reviews but this wine has plenty of stuff and finesse.

Very austere. Balanced, but somewhat Metallic...too much dirt? Might evolve some more and hopefully more fruit becomes available.

Delicate nose. Touch of raspberry and olive but very gentle. Soft palate but not fragile. In a good place now. Very nice if not great CNDP.
