  • Decanted for one hour. Nose of ripe black raspberry, currant, mocha, cedar, dried herbs and anise. Blackberry cream liquor, cedar, crushed rock, vanilla and dried herbs on the palate. Very, very long finish with excellent depth. It goes forever. Full bodied. Outstanding wine that has lots of runway. Served with grilled filet mignon and a whiskey cream sauce.

  • Corked! Obvious from the moment we opened it, and so frustrating - clearly an insanely well-made wine, and MY ONLY ONE OF THE VINTAGE AIIIIEEEEE. A moment of silence please.

  • Primary color. Savory aromas. Silky texture. Creamy cassis, blackberry and spice all back-lit by bright acidity. My mouth was still vibrating a minute after I swallowed - long finish. Firm and with light grip. Super balance. This was electric and hugely memorable. I can't wait to see this in another five years as any flavors added to the profile/complexity would only ramp it up. 97

  • Beautiful wine opened today to celebrate a special event that was a long time coming. This was ready to go with minimal air, showing copious rich dark fruit and floral notes on the nose from the moment it hit the glass. The palate continued with both of those elements but added a host of cool mineral and subtle smoky tones that filled the mouth and made for a wonderfully complex whole package. The finish was clean and smooth, with the tannins well integrated at this point. There’s no hurry on this wine, but it’s in a really nice spot now. As usual, nicely done, Mike Smith.

  • A Week in Cabo; 6/28/2022-7/7/2022 (Cabo San Lucas): PnP. Wow from the start! Earthy, mineral, purple fruited with some dark fruit, white flowers, Black Forest cake, and the telltale bittersweet chocolate. Tannins and oak resolved. Missing the odd tart note I find in younger Dr. Cranes. Much better than the ‘12 from a few weeks back (I am shocked as you). A year ago I put a 99 on this, (just) 98 today, until the last glass. Crazy enough this complimented spicy (authentic) Mexican squid and skirt steak as well as dessert.

Drank over 2 hrs, got boozy and brandy-like at 1:40. Lost a point. Last bottle, and I’m on the prowl.

  • The wine is in a great place. Coravin’d a glass and wonderful right away. Popped the cork the next night and poured right away. Great balance with the tannins integrated nicely supporting the nice dark fruit running through the wine. I feel this wine has some good years left in it.

  • Delicious. Better day 2. My last bottle but if I had more I would hold a couple years.

  • 2 hour slow ox; medium to full bodied, soft velvety tannins, blackberry, black currants, delicious.

  • From magnum. I was a little disappointed in this compared to the last time I had it 2 years ago when I ranked it much higher. Bottle variation? I feel as if this wine has really mellowed and as a result came across as very muted. Nose was muted, fruit was very soft and there was hardly any tannins of which to speak. It was a very smooth wine that did glide effortlessly across the tongue. It just didn't have the "wow" factor that I typcially enjoy from Mike Smith and any of his Beckstoffer wines.

  • Darker crimson color. Given an hour air and followed. Rather subdued nose, some berry and currant driven nose with some coaxing. Deep, very concentrated palate. Hugs the line on prune notes but doesn't quite get there--still fresh. Still very fruit driven, plush and seamless. Powerful wine that hides it's structure well--tannins are rather mild and the etoh is in check. Lengthy finish. With a stronger nose would be a more complete wine.

  • Simply phenomenal! This was the heavy artillery I’ve been waiting on.

Pop and poor and drink over an hour ...went quickly because everyone loved it ...no specific notes but one of the better and most complex wines I’ve had in over a year.

99 points and dare I say I think this gets even better, purple fruits, black fruits, spice cake, earth just simply delicious if I paid more attention to the notes and less attention to how good this was I could provide a better description. As a friend put it, sometimes you don’t need to taste wine to tell how good it is — the nose will do it for you—this was one of those wines

  • Wow, just wow!! This '13 Myriad Dr. Crane is drinking amazingly.

Was given just a short decant, probably 30-60 min and was just ready to Go!

Other wines in the line up were 18 Bevan Harbison, 2018 Rivers Marie Panek, 2016 Saxum Paderewski, also had an 18 Aubert Lauren, and consensus was the Myriad, hands down was the WOTN by everyone.

Wish I would have been able to take down some notes, but the bottle was gone in a flash. I found it to be mostly Dark and Purple fruits, with just the most amazing bouquet. Everything was just integrated so well, probably the most balanced Cab I have had in a long time, as just had a "flow" to the experience.

So very glad I have 2 more bottles to be able to enjoy in the coming years. There were absolutely no signs of any aging, color was dark purple, and no hints of any age on the palate.

  • A lot of red berry fruit--not my ususal CS find. Some things like peach or nectarine in the background, Interestingly I am getting some baking spice--again, something I don't normally see in CS, more a PN thing. Very sedate tannin and acid.

Wow, these notes don't resememble the ones that I posted on the same wine in 2017. Obviously, if anybody puts a lot of credence in my opinion, that trust comes with a fair amount of risk.

  • Delicious. Youthful but still very enjoyable right out of the bottle with huge concentrated fruit and fine tannins. Long life ahead with this one with room for improvement I’m sure.

  • Floral and black fruit aromatics followed by blackberry, black cherry and raspberry fruit with gravelly minerality. Fine tannins with a licorice finish.

  • Lush, rich and balanced, a tricky trifecta. I loved the texture, rich mouthfeel and sweet tannins. Layers of sweet red and blue fruit, some spice, smoke and charred oak. An indulgent treat.

  • PnP at Hilton Head restaurant in a perfect setting watching the sunset. This was getting better with air but never gave it a full chance to see it at its best -- it was too good. A bit of a fruit driven bruiser blossomed with spiciness, fine tannic spine and nice acidity. Some nice tobacco notes peak through the fruit on the finish. Big nose of fruit. Great potential.

  • Needed 4hrs air to settle down. Huge wine with big fruit and tannins, but strong acidity keep this fresh. Conetrated dark fruits. Just a hint of heat. Long finish. Could use another couple years to unwind but enjoyable now in the style

  • Date approximate. Outstanding wine. Approachable in relative youth. !!! Meaty, spicy, a bit of herbs with up front fruity power.

  • This is turning out to be a very notable version of Dr. Crane. Initially on PnP, a bit of liqueur-esque black cherry and cassis notes dominated; but with a total of two hours+ of air, this really developed into a more sophisticated and concentrated animal. Darker black cherry, black raspberry, purple plum, red and black licorice, dust, and some soft spice (cinnamon). Don't rush to sipping on PnP...Instead, wait a couple of hours and let it breathe first. You’ll be better rewarded with a more complex and deliberate version of the varietal.

This has a wonderful concentration that wouldn't let up. I loved it. After every couple of sips, I was waiting for the "Mike Smith style" that some CT folks talk about (usually in reference to modernism, or sometimes as a sweeter version of Cabernet). Not so here. It is "modern" I suppose in that it pushes with the fruit at the front and isn't afraid to deliver flavor in spades, but it does so with a budding maturity that may come to full fruition in a year or two. In 2020, I think this will be an epic wine. 98 points RP is easy to fathom. And if that's the case, I can only imagine what the '13 Elysian will be like in a year or two.

This Crane is good to drink now with a couple of hours of air, but it stands to be utterly captivating in a couple of years. Hold if you can. 96-97+ points for now.

  • Very attractive red plum color. Dark brooding nose. On the tongue I get the hoped-for CS black fruit. However, it is quite muted--no “sweetness.” Then I get something like pencil lead. Some salinity. I’m finding this wine not nearly as tannic as I might have guessed. Tart acid makes me want another sip.

  • It's been nearly a year and a half since I last had the 2013 Crane. This was a PnP at a restaurant. The first thing that grabbed me about this wine was its chiseled core of red and purple berry fruit and beautiful interplay of acid and structure. It was young but not tannic or astringent in any way whatsoever. The fruit was an almost elegant push of simmering intensity that slowly, steadily carried on through the finish. A nice touch of acid on the back end framed out the red/purple fruit, which repeated on the back end.

The attack on this wine was not the Tyson vs. Galifianakis knockout Hangover punch of fruit, sweet, and alcohol that can sometimes blast up initially from young, unresolved wines that are teeming with unbridled intensity. This is FAR from that. Though it still presents young, this Dr. Crane seems to currently be in a phase where its delivery is starting to really align in a much more adult fashion. It's becoming a more cerebral wine than I had anticipated. This is a big wine (for most), so know that going into it, but it has the ability to frame its core with a higher degree of finesse than I've seen in some of Myriad's younger wines. I caught some nice additional notes of cassis, black cherry liqueur, cacao nibs, and even a floral component after about an hour of air. It continued to subtly transition over the course of an hour+ of consumption.

This wine shows huge promise and upside. For those concerned that favoring some "big" wines equates to a seemingly overt fruit slap in the face every time, fear not. This is not that wine. This wine is a firm hand shake that doesn't try to pull you in any further for that awkward half-man hug at the end. It stays at the ready, and presents the way a qualified, confident professional might walk into a job interview. Not stuffy. Not sloppy or spastic. Just that perfect balance of specialist and amazing artist.

I still think 2018/2019 is probably the best period to really see what time in bottle has done for this wine. 96-97+ points, and I'm likely underscoring. I'm still thinking about this wine...

  • Finally decided to opened one of my two bottles to see if I wanted to order this year. Unfortunately it was quite "corky". Oh well, such is life sometimes....

  • This 2013 Myriad Dr. Crane is lovely, a Cab that exhibits purity, finesse, and elegance. It has a really good flavor profile, really nice dark red and black fruit, however the fruit is not as deep as I anticipated, but very good none the less. There are nice tannins and it is showing a little more acidity than I expected. I believe this wine may show better in its youth. All that being said, I expected more from this wine. Perhaps it’s in a bit of a dumb phase, who knows. Slow ox for about 5 hours and decanted for 2 hours. I wait a while before I try another. 94.6 Points.

  • Oh my goodness. What a great bottle of wine. This is the best Myriad Dr Crane to date (IMO) - a notch ahead of the '10 and '12. Perfect balance. So many layers... A finish that goes on and on. And flavor profile that is spectacular. Seemed very early to open, but after reading the few reviews below (which are spot on btw), I had to try. Glad I did.

As a side note, we opened a Becklyn '13 a few nights earlier that also blew us away. Mike knocked it out of the park in 2013!

  • Carter/Myriad Tasting with Mike Smith (Carter Cellars (Envy Wines) - Calistoga): An absolutely stellar wine. Tasted alongside the 2013 Myriad GIII, and 2013 Carter Fortuna, Weitz, and Hossfeld.

The 2013 Myriad Dr. Crane boasts a powerful core of black and dark purple and blue berry flavors. Blackberry, black currant, rich red plum, fresh red and black licorice, baking spices, and a touch of burnt embers. There is a notable minerality that adds interest to the huge fruit. This is a wine that truly epitomizes the locked and loaded aspects of the top echelon Cabernets of the 2013 vintage.

Amazing purity of fruit with a powerful push of beautifully delineated and sweet tannins. I wanted to spend the next few hours with this wine, watching it evolve; unfortunately I didn't have the opportunity this go-around.

97+ at the moment, knowing full well that this ethereal wine will evolve into something even more special over the coming years. I would hold this wine until early 2018 before its truly optimized drinking window appears.
