Straw and lanolin on the nose and very reminiscent of Upper Hunter semillon. The palate is broad with a distinct honey note and cut straw and the acid is holding the fruit quite nicely. It also reminds me of the old Dayton’s semillons of the 1970s. Certainly different to many of the more refined expressions of more recent years but viva la difference!

{screwcap, 11%} Pale straw. Fairly advanced; a bit greasy, grassy, with a lanolin character. Palate is a bit low on acid, which gives it a thick character, without making it weighty. Flint, honey, thick yellow fruit; it’s nicely drinkable but hardly the pinnacle of Hunter semillon. About ready I think, will just get broader and flabbier with much more age.

{screwcap, 11%} Mid-yellow. Quite advanced for 5 years; smokey chiefly, with a dark citrus, browning lemon character. Dry and savoury. Not much overt druit, but sand and dirt instead. Medium-bodied, with a medium length finish. A touch simple though; a bit one-dimensional, even if pleasant. Will still age, but will it improve?

{screwcap 11%} Pale yellow with a hint of green. Seems in rather a dumb phase on both nose and palate, with gentle grass and even oak-like aromas and grass, straw and a hint of lime in the flavours. The acid is surprisingly reticent which seems to nudge the wine towards medium bodied weight: the palate seems a bit hollow although the finish is around medium length. Might be best avoided for another 4-5 years I suspect.

Hunter Valley - 6 Cellar Doors (Hunter Valley): {screwcap, 11%, A$40} Fragrantly perfumed and grassy. Polished grass and hay flavours. Light/medium-bodiy, but lively medium/high acidity gives this much greater presence, depth and persistence than the standard offering. Medium/long finish. Good.

Somewhat disappointed in this Semillon. Hadn't developed the characteristics I had expected. No nuttiness of oak present.
