  • Great quality but far too astringent on the finish which seems to be a known fault with this producer on very old vintages

  • Opened a bottle after an evening of other wines. This one got shuffled back to the back of the cabinet. Popped and poured.

Nice enough purple color, with a bit of bricking around the edge, though not as much as I might have expected. In the nose, the first impression was wet cardboard. I think this bottle had a bit of TCA taint. But it was subtle. Strangely, unlike most cases if TCA it didn’t get worse as we drank it over a couple of hours, so I’m a bit reticent to place all shortcomings on TCA. Perhaps there wasn’t TCA, but something else.

It still showed some nice, but compromised fruit. Medium body with a predominance of red fruits, most notably sour cherries, with a hint if talc and smoke. A bit of Gevrey earthiness, without tipping over into animale. Not particularly complex at this point. The smell of wet cardboard lessened, but never completely went away. It seemed to be drying palate, as well as having the fruits bit suppressed. But you can tell there was a decent wine there before. 86 points, for this bottle, and it still can be marginally enjoyed. Drink up.

  • Still alive but fading fast. First impressions are of smoky cherries and cola spices, with cherry compote anise and some green weediness that fades quickly. A few moments of air in the glass, and the fruit begins to disappear, leaving a whisper of tart cherry and berry notes. On the palate, the fruit has blended into gentle earthiness, with hints of leathery dried fruit that are struggling to reach out. Elegant, but just over the hill. Dugat's vineyards are just above the village of Gevrey - this bottle was purchased in Beaune in 2003. If only I had drank it a couple of years ago...

  • Dark ruby. Nose of dark fruit, mushroom and earth. Nice balance with a mineral inflected finish. The tannic structure is very much here but softer. An over performing wine, which we caught in a sweet spot. Suspect it could have gone a few years longer .

  • Drank over Valentines dinner. A nice wine, albeit simple. Nice earthiness and resolved acidity. Nice minerality, texture, and red fruit.

  • With Antje, confit de canard. Rather monolithic, inky and rather tanninc. Good depth, but not very balanced. Still hard and unrevealing.

  • Popped and poured, allowed to breathe in the glass for about a half hour. Nice nose of dark fruits and underbrush. Good weight on the palate, with flavors of black cherry, truffle, earthy spices, and a distinct minty note on the mineral-tinged finish. This wine is in a nice place, evocative of its time, place, and caste. Drink up.

  • Nearly opaque brick red. A dense mineral core on the nose complimented by licorice, meat, spice and a touch of brett on the nose. Seamless on the mouth with a grippy, slightly sweet, and lighter finish.

  • Nose was close to last bottle from a week ago but palate was way off. Very little fruit, tart and acidic finish. Will chalk it up to the bottle and hope my next is in line with the first one.

  • Regular villages, not the 1er Cru. This bottle is shrooming on top of an iron ore mine. Strong and intriguing truffle essence combines with a touch of oak spice, layered on top of the cherry fruit that tends toward black on the nose. An iron ore/mineral beam really provides a firm/grippy edge to the tangy attack, deepening with air - though the tannin is evident on the finish. What began as a decent wine with a beguiling bouquet has found structure over the course of an hour. I would definitely decant this for an hour before drinking. Will be interesting to see what happens with the tannins here, the bottle seems pretty darn open bouquet and mid-palatewise, but it just doesnt want to relent on the back end.

  • This needs a small amount of aeration - I used 10 minutes. It has a generous nose. Some pleasant structure. A bit bitter on the palate. Medium finish. Drinks with dark secondary fruit. Drinking fine now - probably in its prime. An acceptable village level wine from a good producer. Does not rise above its station, but shows some Gevrey-Chambertin terroir. Paired well with a grilled monkfish.

  • Intriguing aromas of black cherry, truffle, earth, spices. Good initial impression in the mouth, but muted and a little monolithic now (especally in the middle) before some attractive cherry/mineral/spice flavors come out on the end. I presume this is shut down right now.
