(Restaurang Hyllan, Saluhallen Uppsala) A good and vital Rioja without the extreme vanilla concentration so often found in bottles from that region. Dense and with good concentration and balanced fruit. Surprisingly vigorous considering it is 10 years old.

Luxurious scent: almost pinot-like dark cherry, forest floor earthy gutsiness and a touch of balsamic iodine sticking-plaster. Rich palate, pleasantly but not overbearingly sweet and furry tannins. Medium-long finish, on which an unpleasant mouldiness briefly resurfaces which was only just detectable on the palate. A lot going on here. I suspect this wine was at its peak about a year ago and is declining now. 89P, marked down from 91 because of that mould taint.

Cured Meats, teas, Olives and coffee. italian acid, a bit hot and a bit thin. too short. Didnt list any redeeming qualities on my notes although there were plenty. good qpr.

better showing than the other bottles. the nose is pretty, with something floral hidden in there amidst the intense grenache fruit. still kind of hot on the nose. there are cocoa unertones too, maybe even something herbal. the palate, while not unpleasant, is totally simple. this is a modern style, and it's not doing much for me.

i dunno, maybe my patale has changed a lot in the past 2 years. this is rather charmless to me now. dark and still quite tannic with powdery cocoa and some black cherries. i've tasted many a rioja in the past year or so that i far prefer to this one. there is a nice earthiness though.

Dark purple and elegant, ready to drink. Silky like a Grenacha with concentrated black fruit from the Tempranillo. Balanced with tannin but very smooth.

Dark purple with clear rims, really spicey and lots of vanilla oak at first. takes a half hour for the juicy black cherries to come out. A nice wine, would be good with hearty fare.

Tasted June 17, 2006 at a retail tasting. Opened and served immediately in a Riedel Vinum Cabernet Sauvignon glass. Ruby color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Nose of chocolate, a mix of dark fruits and a touch of leather. Flavors of red licorice, red berries and some red cherries. Firm tannins with fresh acidity. Drink over the short term. Based on the local retail price of $28.89 I’d say the value here is acceptable.

Spanish Wines (Farpointe Cellar): Deep ruby. A nose of dusty cedar, raspberry, cherry, and vanilla. The palate had lots of cherry and raspberry fruit, with notes of cedar, spice, and vanilla. The tannins were very firm, and the finish was long.

A pleasure with roast lamb and sweet potatoes. A concentrated nose of dark berries and more subtle undertones of cocoa. Juicy black cherries on the palate, and a bit tannic. After an hour open, even more juicy, and also more complex with dark floral and herbal notes. Smoother tannins too. This is a straight forward and gutsy food wine that brings a smile.

Decantado hora y media.

LKTG Tempranillo; 5/23/2005-5/24/2005 (Bandoleone Restaurant Seattle): The nose was grenache-y - dusty with kirsch, sweet corn, and graham crackers when I went back to it later. Medium bodied with light tannins on the attack and a long, drying finish. It had note of almost but not quite leather on the palate (I wrote suede). The nose was 92 points, the palate around 88, I compromised on the low side with an 89.

Not a very inspiring wine. It has a very sour finish, which I don't like and had a pretty short finish. Maybe I didn't give it a real chance? I'll try the rest of the bottle today.

Tempranillo at Bandoleone in Fremont (Bandoleone Restaurant): Oaky, Vanilla, Blackberry, cedar, a hint of menthol. Lots of wood tannin and a bit of heat obscure otherwise nice cherry dominant notes on the palate. New oak dominates. I liked it, but would have loved less oak on it.

Low-key tasting of Tempranillo (Tinto etc.) (Seattle, WA): The nose shows oaky vanilla, black cherry and black raspberry. The palate is round with bright acids, cherry fruit, and a chewy finish. With air the finish gets somewhat bitter. There is not a ton of dimension to this, but it is a nice wine.

Tasting a few Spanish wines (Chicago IL): Tasting. Unusual/confusing combination of very "new world" seemingly generously oaked, and "old world" with plenty of bracing rustic tannins. This has a lot of character, but I'd give it another 3 or 4 years to show its true underlying potential.
