I forgot about this bottle but it was still going strong. The cloying fruit I noticed the last time, back in 2014, has settled down and the elegance I was looking for has taken over. Classic tastes of blackberries and blackcurrants with a little creamy patch mid-palate and a decent finish. It has lost a little sparkle so probably best to drink it in the next couple of years. One of the rare 2005s not to suffer from excessive tannins.

Reports of the Count d'Agassac's death are premature, even if the cork broke in half and gave a battle in coming out. A bright ruby in the glass, with nary a touch of bricking. A very nice nose of red currant, earth, forest floor, herbs and dried flowers. Served at the suggested 58-62 degrees fahrenheit, and this was just fine, with good acidity and concentration. We can rest easier over the fate of the last few remaining bottles.

Wunderbar.

Although I have followed cellartracker for a long time, this is the first time that I have been compelled to write a review. The first and only time that I had previously tasted the the 2005 D'agassac was in 2010, and found the wine at that time to be disjointed and rough. However, having had a second bottle last night, the wine has smoothed out to be a beautiful wine. Admittedly, it does not have the intensity and purity of the best Bordeaux wines, but still is elegant with lovely fruit. A 92 at the least. It makes me hopeful about other, more highly regarded 2005 Bordeaux wines still untouched.

Time has not been good to this bottle. Decanted one hour prior to pairing with grilled NY strip loin steaks. A medium+ dark ruby in the glass, the nose features blue and black fruits and oak spices. Medium body on the palate, taste uninspiring, with middling acidity and a short, clipped finish. This was better at 4 years of age versus 12 now. Not sure if really on downhill slope, in a "dumb" phase, or a sole bottle issue. More bottles to find out.

As Francois Mauss likes to say, small wines in big vintages and big wines in small vintages. It is also fascinating that just like a village Burgundy, it lacks the finesse, complexity and layered fruits. Nevertheless this is a pleasant surprise. Classic left bank nose, mostly red fruits, plum, also a hint of cassis, leather, lead pencil, cedar, caramel and earth. Excellent concentration, sweet ripe red fruit driven palate impression, nice density and texture, mineral, bright acidity and good finish. For my palate, this is really youthful and will require additional five years of cellaring to bring out more tertiary notes. It doesn’t posse the refined yet expressive nose of the top 05 classified growth but what an impressive effort. I high recommend.

Medium/full bodied, with a nose of tobacco, earth, forest, blackberry and floral notes. The nose is a little better than the palate. There is freshness and even a bite of crispness to the fruit and a hint of rusticity to the tannins. This blend of 53.5% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot and 1.5% Cabernet Franc is drinking fine today.

The first thing I noticed was the label, front and back. On the front, the alchohol stated is a remarkably precise 13,2°. On the back, a very helpful label giving the cépage percentages (53,5% C.S., 45% Merlot and 1,5% Cab Franc) and a sommelier's tasting notes, together with the assertion that "We reject fashion, the standardisation of taste, the excessive use of new wood...We take on a new challenge with each vintage, because consumer confidence can never be taken for granted" Well that sounded promising!
Good strong colour, a ripe, fleshy and fruity nose with strong blackcurrant aromas and a touch of raspberry. Very fruity attack, with oozing blackcurrants at first, then a strong wave of mushy blueberry, backed up with fresh raspberry and elderberry, before a refreshing wave of minerality that keeps the whole thing palatable. The finish combines the different tastes and lingers pleasantly in the mouth. There are tannins, but these are not at all obtrusive and there isn't a trace of oak. It is certainly original, like a cross between an un-oaked modern Right Bank wine and a fruitier Cru Bourgeois. Very youthful, I would have mistaken it blind for a 2009. The fruit is really impressive, but at the moment slightly cloying - I enjoyed tasting it more than I enjoyed drinking it. This will change in three or four years' time when the minerality will emerge fully and when the fruit enters its secondary phase. It isn't really my sort of wine, I prefer a bit more finesse and grip, but it is certainly a hedonistic crowd pleaser, mercifully free from wood pollution. At 14€ this is a middle to upper range CB but still represents very good value. Not quite as good as Caronne, better than Paloumey.

On the nose: a finely textured nose with aromas of jammy wild fruit (blackcurrant, whortleberry and blackberry), with a Mediterranean density. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- To the eye: A deep purplish red colour with flashes of plum, revealing an impressive density and depth. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- On the palate: The amplitude of the tannins is simply astonishing. Their softness offset by a slight tang, giving the wine an impression of freshness despite the vintage. The finish is seemingly endless with hints of laurel, black pepper and camphor. After a few minutes, the tasting gains in warmth highlighting the notes of moorland and smoky Provence herbs. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- After airing: The density is confirmed with airing, in an explosion of ripe fruit, spices and black pepper. The mineral notes come out on warming, with touches of chalk, juniper berries and olive oil. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Cellaring potential: 0 / 12 years -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Peak: 2012 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Best served at: 16° C -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Decanting: 3 hours -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Matching with food : Roast beef with preserved shallots and potatoes pan-fried in the juice of the meat with thyme and laurel.

It took me 10 bottles to learn not to pop & pour, which yields a thin & sour wine, but rather to decant and air, which produces a round, balanced, fruity, and delightful claret, though not a distinguished one. Oh well: at least two bottles were worth the price.

Decanted 4 hours and followed over a further 4 hours. Tannic and a little woody right now. The fruit really struggles to show through. Leather and cedar notes predominate on the nose and the palate and the finish still has firm tannins 8 hours after opening. Even though this is inexpensive for an '05 Bordeaux it is hard to recommend. Will probably be a little better in 5 years or so but it is hard to see it improving significantly due to the apparent lack of fruit. OK but better options available.

A solid Bordeaux from a great vintage that falls short of being anything special. Good fruit on the attack, but followed by a bit thin mid-palate and reasonably smooth tannins on the finish. Very good, but not exciting. Prefer the 2000.

Acidity and tannin show it is probably too early to drink. Raspberry and black fruit can be found, as well as some wood and mineral. Not a bad wine. It just needs some time.

Opened to see what one of our supposably drinkable 2005 Bordeaux might be like, and we had the Vinturi at the ready! A dark garnet in the glass, the pre-vinturi, concentrated nose featured both bing and dark cherries, currant and blackberry, along with hints of earth, coffee, cedar and spice. The palate was very fruity, with the aforementioned berries, earth, spice, and strong tannins. After passing through the Vinturi, the nose was smoother, with more pronounced cedar, along with a hint of vanilla. The palate likewise, along with the promiment fruits, now featured more cedar and some funky earth, with a hint of vanilla. This is not an over-oaked wine, and my wife and I were very impressed with this modestly-priced 2005 Bordeaux!

Le Guide Hachette rated this the joint-top Haut Medoc of the 2005 vintage. Opened two hours before meal, the charge of sweet, chocolaty fruit was more than satisfactory. Lush texture seemed to risk loosening, so I didn’t decant. With meal, the flavours folded over themselves as they absolutely piled out. Bright blackberry and mocha chocolate. Bluebell flowers and cream. Soft blackcurrant. A streak of cedar is let out occasionally. Extremely ripe tannins, perceived as a faint prickle at the start and largely invisible thereafter (even, very unusually, the next day). A mouth-watering little pulse of acidity. Superior density and flow.
International/homogenous in primary flavour profile, yes, but also genuinely special. It is a superb drink now. Will it work with age? It’s hard to see underneath the exceptional concentration of sweet fruit. However, it’s equally hard to believe that this wine will ever be hard-work: the tannins are so ripe; the flavours so pure; and it isn’t actually over-oaked. I’ll go along with Le Guide and give it time to turn down the volume. 91 pts now.

EXCELLENT!

Complex aromatics with Elderberries, barnyard and cedar with a tannic cranberry finish. Interesting wine, but a bit heavy and still very tannic. A wine with strength and would go well with steak.

Assez long et persistant.

Color is a very deep dark purple. Nose is a nice blend of dark fruits and earthiness. Very smooth on the palate with a nice long finish.

On the nose: a finely textured nose with aromas of jammy wild fruit (blackcurrant, whortleberry and blackberry), with a Mediterranean density.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
To the eye: A deep purplish red colour with flashes of plum, revealing an impressive density and depth.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
On the palate: The amplitude of the tannins is simply astonishing. Their softness offset by a slight tang, giving the wine an impression of freshness despite the vintage. The finish is seemingly endless with hints of laurel, black pepper and camphor. After a few minutes, the tasting gains in warmth highlighting the notes of moorland and smoky Provence herbs.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
After airing: The density is confirmed with airing, in an explosion of ripe fruit, spices and black pepper. The mineral notes come out on warming, with touches of chalk, juniper berries and olive oil.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Cellaring potential: 0 / 12 years
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Peak: 2012
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Best served at: 16° C
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Decanting: 3 hours
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Matching with food : Roast beef with preserved shallots and potatoes pan-fried in the juice of the meat with thyme and laurel.

Good, typical Bordeaux soft on the palate with plenty of fruit still present. WIil be interesting to see if there is enough tannin to support further development.

decanted this for about 25 min.
This still needs time....very primary and not a lot of tertiary characteristics coming through.....

Bright purple, acidic, high toned fruit with a little dark tannic undertone. Gritty finish. A decent inexpensive drink. Drinking pretty well but will benefit from some bottle age.

91 pts now.
