Light body. Lots of bricking. Plum, dried strawberry, clove, and a hint of dark cherry. A bit past its time with faded fruit and a fairly high acidity. Needs time in the decanter: ~2hours. Drink now.

Macerated with the skins for 15-18 days. Fermenting slowly in stainless steel until March, after which the wine is moved to age in oak. Aged for 2 years in huge (10000-liter) oak bottis (90%, all old) and small barriques (10%, approx. 1/5 new). 13,5% alcohol.
Luminous, translucent and moderately deep cranberry red with a pale brick-orange rim. Dense and brooding yet not particularly expressive nose with dark-toned aromas of sour dark plums, some wizened black cherries, a little bit of raw meat, light earthy tones, a hint of sour cherries and a touch of tar. The wine feels ripe, fresh and acid-driven on the palate with juicy flavors of black cherries, some ripe yet sour red plums, a little bit of savory wood spice, light stony mineral tones, a developed hint of wizened dark fruits and a touch of blood and game. The wine is impressively structured with its high acidity and firm, grainy tannins that slowly pile up on the gums, making the wine feel moderately grippy. The finish is rich, juicy and long with moderate tannic grip and bright flavors of sour cherries, some tangy apple tones, a little bit of wizened dark fruits, light savory wood tones, a hint of earth and a touch of stony minerality.
A consistently very balanced, tasty and classically built Nebbiolo. There's a slightest touch of wood here, but the overall emphasis is on pure and ripe yet very fresh and acid-driven Nebbiolo fruit. A fine-tuned effort where nothing seems to be of excess or out of place. Starting to show a little bit of age, but the overall feel is still quite youthful and I can imagine the wine will continue to develop easily for another 10-15 years. Great stuff, solid value at 23,90€.

Black cherries, anise, earth, and tarry notes on the finish. Leathery tannins. Fruit became brighter near the end of the bottle, thinking a quick decant before serving wouldn't hurt at all. Travaglini always delivers. A- (91) evaluation.

From a bottle opened last night - a light translucent ruby in the glass, with red fruit and menthol on the primary nose.
Sweet and sour cherry fruit, with good acidity and decent persistence - I haven't started to dig in to my Barolo from this vintage yet, but if this entry-level bottling is a harbinger of things to come, definitely something to look forward to.

PnP, tart black cherry aroma with wonderful allspice-cinnamon hints initially that reveals more earthy, tarry depth as you get deeper into the bottle. Softer woody tannins at this point, sweet cedar notes have started to develop. Love to see the development here (see previous notes); glad I have at least 4 more bottles. Overall Evaluation: A-.

Travaglini's Gattinara is nothing if not consistent: balanced, lightish for a red, with a fair bit of structure too. Thin in color, with spryly acidic red fruit, shortish finish, notably light tannins. Perhaps a little too reserved to be a crowd pleaser, and a little light on distinctive personality to really delight the wine nerds, but it's hard to find fault in any element. Super food friendly, but NB its nuance could be drowned out by bolder dishes. Very good.

Classic nebbiolo profile; strawberry, goji, mushroomy forest floor, and a spicy floral hint. I was struck by the vivacious and uplifting acidity; this wine should really be consumed with a meal. The tannins are still definitely present; the wine is in its drinking window now and should last at least a good five years. I thought this was one of those nebbiolos that are very burgundian. A great deal if you can find a bottle for $30 or less.

PnP, first glass immediately aromatic- sweet red cherries, allspice, anise, and some cinnamon hints that come together and deepen into black cherry notes as I continued to swirl. Swirling also also brings out the floral notes of cherry blossom, lilac, and hints of tar.
Rich palate of bright, fresh cherries, more allspice than anise, with hints of sour cranberry and cocoa powder. Great acidity and very complimentary rustic tannic structure with some hints of earthy-umami palate development. Oak and alcohol are definitely in balance.
Elegant, rich in flavor, and very easy drinking. Style & Quality: A- (92). Value: A- (90) at $29.99, Hope Valley Wine and Beverage special order. Overall Evaluation: A- (91).

Dark, yet translucent cherry red color with some bricking in the rim. Incredibly attractive, aromatic and pure nose full of varietal characteristics: sweet, dark-toned cherry, succulent red berries, some dusty earth, light rose-driven floral nuances and hints of tartar beef, savory smokiness or tar and a touch of sweet wood. Dry, medium-bodied and structured on the palate, yet also showing wonderful, balanced and intense flavors of dark cherry, bitter sour cherry notes, some stony minerality, a hint of plums and a touch of aromatic wood. Quite pronounced, firm tannins and high, yet very balanced acidity. The finish is long, rich and powerful with quite pronounced bitter notes of sour cherries and some tannic astringency. There are also intense flavors of cranberry, sour cherry, rose petals, a little peppery spice and a hint of stony minerality.
A really wonderful, balanced and varietally pure Gattinara Spanna that is on par with the spectacular 2006. Showing even better now than a year ago, but most likely will need 10 years minimum until starting to show its best. Definitely a wine that can be cellared extensively. Even at higher prices I'd prefer this over many Baroli or Barbareschi, but at 21,90€ the QPR is just stunning. Requires long decanting, so let the wine breathe at least a few hours.

Yes, pure Nebbiolo goodness! Shy but beautiful nose of balsamic notes, bright cheries and forest floor. Silky smooth on the palate: intense, bright red fruit compote wrap around with smoky, leathery, earthy flavors. Basically like a good Barbaresco or Barolo. And still stays kind of in an ok price point...

Belle robe cerise claire. Fraise. ***(1/2)

Moderately dark yet fully translucent pomegranate color with a subtle brick-red hue. Rich and expressive nose with vibrant aromas of red cherries, tar, some dusty earth, a little bit of tangy red berries and a subtle hint of smoke - almost like charred meat. The wine is medium-bodied, firm and very intense on the palate with quite powerful, savory flavors of fresh dark cherries, sour cherry bitterness, some sous-bois, light notes of sweet baked spices, a little bit of tart red forest fruits, a hint of ripe plummy fruit and a touch of gravelly minerality. The wine is very structured and moderately tightly-knit with its high, crunchy acidity and still very firm and grippy tannins that don't feel particularly aggressive, yet lend an unpolished, rustic edge to the wine. The finish is long, robust and tannic with prominent, mouth-drying astringency and persistent flavors of ripe black cherries, chokeberries and sour cherry bitterness, some floral character, a little bit of tangy red berries and a hint of brooding sous-bois character.
A poised and remarkably vibrant Nebbiolo that shows some obvious ripeness, yet it doesn't come across as too sweetly-fruited and soft. The inherently lean and structured nature of Nebbiolo is here on the fore beautifully, making the wine remarkably drinkable already, yet promising worlds on aging potential. One of the greatest recent Travaglini Gattinara vintages, will age gracefully for years, decades even. Great value at 21,90€.

Luminous pale garnet color with almost colorless rim. Ripe, complex and perfumed nose with lovely, rich aromas of dark cherry, some tar, a little aromatic spices and a hint of rose. Full-bodied and rather concentrated for a Gattinara with good, taut, acid-driven structure. Flavors of ripe dark cherries, some minerality, a little plummy fruit and a slightest hint of aromatic oak complexity. Ripe and gentle - yet rather ample - tannin structure that gives the wine a slightly coarse edge. Intense, ripe and slightly grippy finish with long-lasting flavors of stony minerality, lingonberry, spicy Nebbiolo character, some sour cherry and floral nuances.
A really attractive expression of Nebbiolo and one of the most impressive Travaglinis I've had for a while. Lovely depth, complexity and ripeness without any excessive richness or too sweet fruit character. Everything seems to be in balance and the wine seems to be starting to drink wonderfully, although I suspect the wine will age gracefully easily for a decade, probably even two. Very recommended.

Belle robe cerise claire.
Fraise.

Had this tonight with fettuccine in a cream sauce topped with rabbit sausage & wild mushrooms. Perfectly complimented the dish with notes of cherries & dried flowers. Easy to drink, full bodied wine.

Very soft and refined; red cherries, anise, black pepper with earthy tar and floral hints as well. Tannins leathery but smooth, very food friendly. $55 at Cucina 24 in Asheville, excellent value as a restaurant wine! Overall evaluation: A-.

Tasted blind. Consistent with my previous tasting notes. Still tough and tannic, yet nevertheless a darn lovely Spanna / Nebbiolo.
