Better than expected in that the fruit just about rises above the tannins. Very dark, brooding and quite enjoyable, but less leather and more plums would have been better. Not my sort of Pomerol. Probably needs a further two years.

Much better bottle. Definitely showing its age, but has a good balance. Definitely feels like it has a few more years in front of it, though the last bottle was not so good. You do need to enjoy older wines, but I think this is worth holding onto for another couple of years.

To date, I’ve been very disappointed with the supposed “outstanding 2005 vintage” in Bordeaux. Since 2011, I’ve drank 14 different wines (24 bottles, 60% Right Bank, 40% Left Bank; no Grand Cru Classe or Classed Growth) and have rated them an average score of ~86 points. In general, I found these wines to be “hard”, lacking fruit and generally not ready to drink. Two bottles enjoyed recently have finally started to show promise.
Like my prior experiences with this vintage, the 2005 Montviel followed a similar pattern: very closed and lacking intensity in both aromatics and flavor; highly structured with harsh tannin, and lots of acidity; slightly unbalanced; and only early signs of complexity. There’s plenty of material to work with here, but this still needs another few years to loosen up its grip and start showing. After over three hours of decanting and food this wine is just now starting to show signs of life. I’ve previously enjoyed both the 2003 and 2006 vintages of this wine and neither were as tightly wound as this.
Drank this wine at Tunglok Xihe (Orchard Central) for a wine dinner. Theme of the evening: Old World Merlot dominant wines which are 5 years and older.
Had this wine previously but the wine showed different profiles, probably due to the hour of decanting. Notes of chocolate and coffee were very pronounced in this wine today, with some toffee and caramel.
Very flavourful and fruity with amazing freshness; the wine does not feel 12 years of age. Can still age further to see how far this wine can go. Good to great potential.

Drank this at Li Bai (Sheraton Towers) with my wine mates last night. Theme of the evening: Bordeaux wines 10 years and above.
Perfumed nose with some sweet notes of cassis and lacquer. Rounded with some chewy tannins. Some depth with potential and sustained energy on the palate. The freshness of this wine was amazing.
A bargain buy from 1855 Bottle Shop during the Wine Fair.

Overall disappointing. Very earthy undertones to the wine. The fruit starts out ok, but quickly dies away, to leave a tannic finish which is not satisfying. I hope this gets better, but looking at other notes here I suspect not.

Dark inky color. Interesting nose of phenolic berry. Big legs look enticing. Then nothing. No taste at all. Well balanced tannins. Not off putting in the slightest. Just no taste at all. Disappointed. Bought it on futures so long ago via Gary V's WL. Cellared at 55* with 55% Humidity. Pazzzzzzz. 84 pts.

Fully mature, medium bodied, soft textured, earthy wine that ends with plums and licorice in the finish. This requires consumption over the next few years 3-5 years.

Opens with a hint of bouillon cube followed by dark fruit and forest floor. A bit thin on the palate featuring flavors of herbs and red fruit, turning to tea leaves and forest floor. Becomes more ripe as it sits, developing a raisin quality on the finish. Guessed older Zin. 84-85 pts.

The 2005 Montviel has a gorgeous deep ruby color and is built around fresh blackberry and cherry, along with char, cedar, tobacco and floral. The body is just so soft and silky and the tannins wont let go. This is just entering it's drinking window. (Drink 2011 - 2027) - JD92

WL Chicago Blind Bordeaux night (my house): Nose: amazing nose. vanilla and sweet strawberry on the nose along with a lot of floral characteristics. Very fruit forward nose and is tons of fun to smell
taste: nothing. literally nothing. It's smooth, but there are no characteristics of anything on the mouth. As great as the nose is, this is the exact opposite
overall: the only reason this wine merits an 81 is because of the nose. This is a jekyll and hyde wine and it's very shocking. I don't know if it's because I bought this so soon after realease(though that doesn't make sense) or what, but this is just shocking at how different the nose and mouth are. no taste at all

100% ready to drink. No carafe, just left the bottle open in the cellar for an hour and that was perfect.
