Henry Comes to Tucson: 2001 Tuscany night (Tucker household): A ripe and deep nose. Red fruited and perfumed with strawberry preserves, some cherry fruit, menthol, leather, and florals. Medium bodied and finessed, with a sap and palate presence without weight. Density with balance, elegance and depth. Some leather on the back end. Drinking effortlessly well. Terrific with both the mushroom soup as well as the duck ragout. 93

No. This was stunning 2-3 years ago, but the last two bottles suggest it’s on its down slope. This one was under-fruited and there was little compelling here; poured it out. Some fruit emerged overnight, but still not worthwhile to drink. Sag Harbor weekend with the Edgemont guys.

Unfortunately, this wine seems to be just past its arc and is in decline. It is not as good as the wine was a year ago, as per my and Marco's tasting notes below from my 2001 Tuscan tasting in January 2011. The fruit has waned and the wine is a bit dry on the sides. Still good Tuscan character, with earth, dried cherries, blood orange and some spice, and the acidity is still strong, but it lacks the vigor and brightness of the wine one year ago, and is consistent with my note from August 2011 also citing a decrease in volume. On the second night, it showed pronounced new leather notes. If this is oak-derived, then perhaps as the wine declines in vigor and fruit, the oak treatment from years ago is becoming more apparent (unfortunately, I don't recall having tasted this as a young wine). Loved this wine in the recent past, but not so much currently.

Great floral notes in this wine. I must put Italian wines as some of my favorite wines because of their unique favors. This wine had just the right balance of acids, sugars and fruit depth. The nose was quite closed at first, but opened up after 30 minutes. Tasted rose hips, minerals and sandalwood.

ovely bottle of (mostly) Sangiovese, a riot of cherry flavors (red, black, and dried), leather, earth, with hints of violets. Good acidity, smooth refined tannins, in a good place- my only worry was that it would show a tad backward, but this is drinking very well. A-

Slightly less volume than the bottle I opened in January at my 2001 Tuscan Tasting, but still has the good things I recall that made this one of the stellar wines of the evening eight months ago. There is an attractive purity to the cherry fruit, like the essence of a red Charms lollipop without the candy sweetness, and then the tart/quenching acidity side of cherry comes out as the acids catch up with the fruit. Along with the lovely fruit is that great Sangio leather/herb/dusty hot earth that only good Sangio from Tuscany delivers. Tannins are getting softer and the mouthfeel is relaxed but far from worn. Just a great, honest Tuscan wine that seems to be right in its zone, with plenty of acidity to keep going for at least a few more years.

Le vin est à son apogée : des notes d'évolution à l'oeil, au nez et à la bouche, mais il reste encore tellement de fruit ! Absolument délicieux, un régal, il était à point.

2001 Tuscans @ Asher's (Westport, CT): This just slaps you in the face and wants to get noticed, but not in a ripe fruit/oak kind of way -- this just shows off class. This is svelte, yet carries rich, pulpy cherries and spice. The acidity here thrusts the wine forward and frames the fruit and spice perfectly. Gorgeous lip-smacking length. Loved it.

great nose of black cherry fruit and leathery earth, but very lifted and fresh. palate has softened but the wine is still well structured and it is delicious with pork chops and winter squash. the finish is a little bit short, only quibble.

strong oak upon opening, also incredibly leathery. integrates somewhat with 30 minutes of air, but this is a leathery and earthy wine that is cloaked in a noticeable layer of oak. Disappointing on its own, but when dinner was ready - penne with broccoli rabe and sausage, the wine was so much better. the fruit emerged, the leather worked well with the sausage, and there was better balance. this will probably do well with another 5 years in the bottle, maybe more, and definitely with food. I'm thinking at least 5 yrs and then serve with cheese.

Delightful and exactly what I was looking for when I went to the cellar. Clean, bright cherry flavors, good acidity and some spice. Unfortunately I finished the bottle while waiting on the pizza it was supposed to go with....

Floral nose. Lovely acids with a slightly sweet core. Develops elements of sweat and animal over time. Earthy elements and fruits come out. Great balance, body and precision here.

holy cow! incredible wine. translucent ruby, aromas of dark plums, some earth, pine, and black licorice, with some funky "saddle leather" that blew off after about an hour. this wine changed in the glass - began with some astringency on the finish, juicy plums, some raspberries, and a hint of wood. absolutely pure fruit - clear as a bell. after a few hours the wione was more round, wothout the astringency, and with a lucious finish. just beautiful, and clearly it will age well.
