I hate to admit it, but this is tough to beat. While not particularly characterful or unique, this is a very solid Rioja that definitely speaks of place. Crazy bargain at $13/btl. Huge nose of berries, plum, and black cherry. Typical tempranillo flavor profile. Fairly oaky. Great acid balance. Not likely to improve but super solid at the moment.

One of my all time favorites. This wine has been on the market and affordable for at least 5 years. Coming to an end. Replaced by the 2015 which I have not tried. Very affordable at about $14. Silky tannins, dried dark berries, hints of cocoa and oak baking spice notes. A "crowd pleaser" and an easy wine to sell. I am going to miss it.

Outstanding value Rioja! Aromas of dried rose petals, leather, baking spices and cherry compote. Flavors of tobacco, licorice and cooked black cherries. This vintage may now be passing its peak. This wine is always a solid and consistent overachiever.

Good color, a touch of fading. The nose shows aromas of dried red fruits, minerals, tobacco, leather and a hint of flowers. This is medium full bodied on the palate with very good concentration and good class. The medium plus length finish features some drying tannins. This was more advanced than a previous bottle...

Seymour Wine Club Meeting 4/27/19 (Home of Lew Stanio): Tasted blind. Aromas of cherry, tobacco, raspberry and a bit gamey. Flavors of cherry, earth, blackberry and mineral. Ends with a 25 second finish with earthy notes. Wines 5 and 6 were very similar. The main difference was the age, which you could taste more in this wine. I gave this 91 points and it finished tied for 4th.

In the glass, dark yet translucent red with tinges of purple medium legs. Nose consisted of saddle leather, spices, aged tobacco good acids and moderate tannins. Finish is still tannic and strong with prunes and red fruits. In good shape after 9 years could go at least another 5. However, I do not agree with Tim Mathews gracious assessment of this wine. Hence the 88.

Made fine dinner of red wine braised short rib with garlic pomme puree. I wanted to pair with a wine that would be capable of standing up to the savory meal. The plum and dried spice notes made this a pleasant pairing, even though the wine was 9 years old at this point it still felt like it needed time out of bottle to open up.
Good wine for the price, pleased with the pairing.

Excellent characteristic rioja nose and taste profile. Cherry, clove, leather were primary flavors I got. Fine tannins. Very much better after 1 hr. Next time need to decant and wait 1 h before first sip. Will certainly buy more. A solid 90 for now. After a couple more bottles upping to 92. Just fantastic, and for the price it's just about mind blowing.

Says right on the bottle that Wine Spectator scored this at 92. I will do same.
This is a very good bottle of easy drinking wine, New World style lush fruit and reasonable complexity. Available at retail with good bottle age for $15, a solid value for an everyday wine.

Pretty dark, with little sign of aging. Tons of berry and oak on the nose. The palate is still pretty tannic, but there’s a nice balance of fruit and wood. This will easily last for 5+ years. If tasted blind, I would guess Ribera del Duero. Good value.

Still a fabulous wine. Red fruit and a little alcohol on the nose upon opening. Initial hints of pineapple on the palate, but that faded to the familiar cherry. Still needs a little more time in the bottle, I think.

My second, independent review of this wine and vintage, a blend of 80% Tempranillo and 20% Garnacha, Mazuelo & Graciano. Although hardly a month has elapsed since the first tasting, something unpleasant was detected in the finish, the principle cause of the second tasting's lower score. The foil is thin and the cork might or might not be real. The wine was vinturied and tasted immediately at about 20 degrees C; fast to medium legs, nose of sharp fruit & alcohol, medium bodied; taste of stone fruit, especially cherries, a little sourness, tannins not so evident, although a little dryness in the back of the throat; I prefer 100% Tempranillo; pair with hard cheese or drink solo; finish is medium and not quite the best -- a trace of something else in the background (rubber? latex?)

14% alcohol, very dark red, "92 pts. Smart Buy Wine Spectator", imported by Tri-Vin, Mt Vernon, NY, not vinturied, tasted at room temperature shortly after opening; pleasant, pithy nose, citrus, uvic acid, lemon peel; taste is complex, an interesting balance of fragrant-fruity-sweet citrus/alcohol/tannins; medium to long finish, label is well-written, the suggested pairing with rack of lamb is well taken

This is a great Rioja. Nose of cedar and tobacco. Red fruit on the palate. I disagree that it’s excessively oaky- I found a good balance of acid and tannin which make me think this has a few years of development left. Drink or hold a couple more years.

Color: dark purple hues with same tinge. Very little translucency. Nose: overripe dark fruits along with bark, earthiness and dark chocolate. Flavor: fruit component is minimal - dark fruits (plums and strawberry are the first thought), dark currents, very clean - along with lightly toasted, young oak and a bit of red pepper flake bitter dark chocolate. Tannin structure shows quickly in the middle, really helps to give an excellent mouthfeel without overwhelming. Finish is smooth with a linger of a minute or so. Medium to full bodied and dry.
This was a spur of the moment purchase. Originally for cooking, this wine proved to taste really good and pair well with the dish (pork tenderloin along with Indian mustard greens). Great QPR, great contrast to a lot of heavy fruit forward Riojas. Given the vintage not too likely to get much more from aging so appreciate now. Only regret is wasting 1.5 cups for cooking...
