A very solid wine and one of the first young Lafarge I have had that is not completely backwards. Served blind from decanter and thought this was CdN. Very elegant and not nearly as rustic as I was expecting. Splendid.

Off the list at Thasos FLL. Singing on pop n' pour. Beautiful aromas of red cherry, florals, earth and mineral. The palate has velvety fruit with floral and earth complexities. Early peak window but already deliciously approachable in this vintage.

Just classic Volnay, impeccably made, and highlighting why 2014 is an underrated vintage. If you're looking for rich, large-scaled Pinot/Burgundy, look away. Red berries galore, leafiness, spices and a very clear sense of soil/terroir. This is as old-school and grand as they come.

Burgundy - with or without stems? (Zoom!): Entirely destemmed. Darker in colour. My immediate reaction to this was to think "Proper Burgundy!" - lots of flavour married to even more elegance. Impeccable balance, bitter cherry flavour, a gorgeous red apple finish, and finely woven mouth-coating tannins. This tasted ready to enjoy at first and I might have given it a higher score, but it then closed down a bit with air. My and the group's #2.

Off the list at TFL, decanted. Cherry, clay and spice elements with a nice earthy undertone. Balanced. Medium-bodied with cherry, macerated red fruit and mineral on the palate. Has a rustic edge.

Domaine Michel Lafarge Vertical Tasting (E&R Wine Shop, Portland OR): The quietest nose so far tonight... a bit muted, with just the slightest bit of pretty, dark fruited tones poking through. The palate is rich and big, and very well composed, which was surprising considering that tight nose. Certainly has some sizable fruit, but it does have beautiful integration of structural components. This is very big and young on the palate right now and needs a lot of time. The finish then transitions back to being tight as nails, basically just expressing its large scale and structure. Again, you can pinpoint all those structural components, but they are just not showing you anything more than their presence. I believe this will be very good down the road. Score is, as always, for consumption today, where it's a little hard.

Second Sunday Group: 2014 Volnay (Jeff's (hosted by Peter)): Double blind. Notes of cherry, matchstick, spice and clay. Flavors of cherry and spice, with firm tannin and good acidity. By comparison to the rest of the flight this is a bit thin through the midpalate. As it sits it develops some nice floral qualities, more perfumey than flowery, but nice. Cherry and spice continue on the palate, with a bit of a sappy quality on the finish.

Musique & Vin Wine Tasting (Château du Clos de Vougeot): Tasting, brief note. Lots of spice, red berry and cherry aromas. Similar flavors with wonderful textures and balance. Expanding, unfolding finish. Almost ready now, but with there is so much coiled up energy that I'm certain this will evolve in many interesting directions over the next decade+.

Visite au Domaine Michel Lafarge: Un autre nez floral et élégant. Son profil frais et minéral est assez similaire au Caillerets. C'est droit, avec des tanins fins, une superbe pureté. 92-93

The most complete wine of the line up. This combines the minerality of Les Mitan and generosity of Clos du Château des Ducs and adds some zesty tones and increases the intensity and length. Beautiful balance. Fine, lacy tannins. This will age for a long time.

PNP into Riedel Big O glass (“Root” day): Pale purplish ruby to the eyes.
Bright red cherry fruits, florals, herbal and leafy notes.
Very nicely assessable in a classic style.
93-94 points.

Elegant and delicate wine. Typical bourgogne, soft tones, cherries, berries, medium finish. Ready to drink and fully enjoyable.

Wonderful. Perfect Volnay. Structured but showing lots of complexity underneath with a few minutes.

Quatuor inédit en Côte de Beaune - Les Grands Jours de Bourgogne (Tonnellerie Damy - Meursault): Tasting, brief note. Also in barrel. Floral and spice start with very ripe red berry and cherry aromas. Red and black fruit array on palate with intense textures, great spice on finish. Patience will be rewarded with 93-94 point potential, 2025 forward.
