From glass. Big, BIG nose of stinky Dutch Masters cigars and my grandfather's ashtray. Lovely. Also hints of smoky meat. Palate mild, but full, tannin-resolved, juice of the Dutch Masters above, also some surviving cassis, tiniest hints of charcuterie. Delicious astringency, lively acidity. Fabulous mature Bordeaux. Inspired to lay some recent vintages.

- Garnet color with slow forming legs and aromas of vanilla, black currant, blackberry, black pepper, black olive and some smokiness and tobacco. It's in total harmony and has flavours of strawberry jam and prune with a medium/full body. Smooth texture with a long finish -

Monthly tasting club "The Tasting Club"; Pauillac (@RvdG): Fairly light garnet red. In the bouquet herbs and some bell pepper. Same on the palate. Some figs and dates. The tannin is soft and completely melted. Not really concentrated. Still ok, but drink up.

Doorschijnend robijnrood. Merkwaardige geur van kool, rabarber, zwavel en zoute stengels. Al erg ontwikkeld. In de smaak kruidig, zwart fruit, zwavel. Zachte tannines. Hier niet langer mee wachten, ik dacht aan 1985.

Very noticeable lush fruits in the bouquet with also some rhubarb and vanilla. On the palate a lot of butter. Creamy, mild acidity and soft tannin. Quite mature already and lacking concentration. But overall a pleasant wine to drink, but not really a textbook Pauillac; it is too easy. Probably wise to drink this year and not keep it much longer.

PnP. Seemed much more evolved than a bottle 9 months ago. Surprisingly for a 98 this is already all secondary/tertiary notes. Plenty of barnyard, animal notes, mushrooms and leather, Nice but still a rather short finish. Drink up

Pleasant and creamy bouquet with cassis and some cedar. On the palate an elegant wine with soft dark black forest fruits, cassis, some graphite, pleasant acidity and soft tannin. A pleasant light weight, not extremely complex Pauillac and completely ready now. Will drink my last bottle before the end of 2013.

45 min decant, which is needed as the wine gains weight in the decanter/glass. Lighter garnet with a transparent rim. Pretty nose with sous bois, berries, cedar and liquorice. On the palate it's a solid and classic but fairly simple Bdx with a light to medium body. Short to medium finish. Good match with food given high acidity. Will not improve: 87-88

Dinner and a clandestine ES drink (Matsu dinner followed by a trip down to ES): Got the herbs, ginseng roots and capsicums in this. medium tannins, fruit forward with ripe raspberries and red fruit. improves as it sits in the carafe. very enjoyable to drink, didnt identify it as a pauillac because i didnt get the usual leather, graphite on the nose.

Classic Pauillac nose showing lots of underbrush, leather, dried currant and pencil lead with nuances of black olives and tar. Palate is rife with savory tea leaf and herbal notes framing a core of dried red fruit. This is showing a smooth and refined mouthfeel with still-present tannins, a beautiful acidity, and a red spice element that lends complexity. This wine still has legs and will still be in its drinking window for 3-4 more years. I wish I had more.

Should have been drunk several years ago, but still quite silky and not without style, although essentially insipid and with bland fruit

Relatively weak wine. Pleasant enough.
