  • As those who are as long in the tooth as I am are fond of saying, "at some point it's not the vintage but the bottle." Found this in a far corner of my cellar and assumed the worse. Gave it a few minutes to wake up and wow. A sweet, rich, smooth come hither varnish nose. In the mouth, intense black cherry soaked in subtle petit sirah-like camphor. The aroma now fresh like Muir Woods after a good soak. Planned on making my wife salmon for dinner, but switched to a well dry-aged steak. Cellar Tracker says there's one more of these buried somewhere in the deep recesses of my home cellar. Worth putting on boots and a miner's hat to find.

  • Still drinking well but I wouldn't wait much longer. I really dislike the wax over the cork! Sure glad they got rid of it in later vintages.

  • Very slightly corked.

  • Disappointment. Was good, but clearly over the hill. Little fruit left, dry on the finish. Was smooth, good mouth feel, decent nose of berry, dust and spice.

  • NJ Pinot Noir Tasting - June 21st OFFLINE - took place on July 22nd (New Jersey): This bottle just did not do it for me. Very light nose with hints of raspberry and cherry. Berries on the palate, but nothing stood out. I have a feeling this wine may have had some poor storage conditions, because we usually love the Cohn.

  • Initial impression is a shy nose of raspberry and cherry. Initial taste is OK, not nearly as long as the '02 Kanzler. I understand why this is not a well regarded. I think it is probably ready to drink and it's OK. Not too acidic, a pretty easy drink.

30 Min: It's getting worse with heat on the finish that cuts into the pleasure. Otherwise, it's the same and disappointing.

  • 2nd Annual Freeman Caves Weekend for VinoCellar.com; 2/8/2008-2/10/2008 (Various Sonoma County Locations): Served as part of the 2nd Annual Freeman Caves Weekend for VinoCellar.com. Served by Michael Browne at the winery.

Brown tinge to edge; raisin notes with a dry citrus finish. Seems like the fruit is fading. Good.

  • Tasted during a Kosta Browne Winery visit; Dark ruby with a brownish tinge; Definitely secondary with interesting aromas and flavors. If I had any more of these in the cellar I would put them in the drinking queue. 90+

  • Lush aromas of candied cherry, anise, damp forest floor, wild flowers and a little bitter chocolate. Cherry and brambly wild berry dominate the palate with a notes of vanilla and cola. There is just a touch of tannin on the finish. This is a delicate, beautifully poised Pinot with a wonderful satin texture. No sign of alcohol heat. The slight browning in color suggests drinking soon but it did add weight over the two hours it was open.

  • Bad news folks...I think this one is definitely in decline. Color is beginning to brick around the edges and nose seems very alcohol-driven. Smells a lot like candy cane, spice, and alcohol. Almost reminiscent of a Martinelli Blue Slide Ridge. It's pretty round on the palate, but lacks the acidity I would like to see. Once again very viscous, fruity, and zinny with an OK finish. At this point, I would recommend drinking up as I believe the alcohol will become more and more pronounced. Drinkable, but not something I'd really look forward to opening.

Update from day 2 and day 3: Got a lot better with some air, so clearly, I was wrong about my assessment about the wine being downhill. It's still not my style, but that doesn't mean that many of you would enjoy this wine. It actually got to be good and enjoyable, although never great.

  • Lush, plush, sort of linear. Plump but without tons of depth behind the initial attack.

  • This bottle was open for business. Perfumy nose with well integrated oak and flavors made for easy drinking.

  • I certainly don't understand the hype

  • Nice, but not earthshattering. Tannin resolved, solid acidity, orange peel, cranberry. Well done and ready to go.

  • Probably a 92 but unrated due to a head cold; Tasted at Steffen Pelz's 3rd Annual Year-End Wine Tasting. Very good Pinot without any sensation of sweetness. It blew a 02 Martinelli Blue Slide Ridge off of the table.

  • 3rd Annual Year-End Wine Tasting (34th Street Cafe (Austin, TX)): I keep saying that the 2002s are KBs best vintage to date for my palate. The wine has mellowed out a lot and despite being served way too warm (I was dragging it with me all day on business) it starts to show some very promising secondary aromas and flavors. Really a spectacular wine that is soft, velvety, has great red berry fruit and some light plum with some leather and a touch of earth on the finish. Finishes dry, which is the way I like it. I still think it is 2-3 years from being at its peak.

  • Delicate and light on it's feet. Very nice aromatics of red fruit, cherry pie. Long finish and reminisant of a William Selyem in style.

  • Looking at the color (a light ruby) the intensity of aromas and favors is very surprising. The nose has tremendous purity. It smells like a Spring breeze - wild flowers and a hint of the ocean. There is precise cherry along with cola, bitter chocolate and underbush. It hits the palate with juicy, smoky black cherry and cola. It dances lightly across tongue and lingers on the finish with some tannin strength. I will wait another couple of years for my remaining bottles. Hopefully it can add a little texture, smooth out the tannin and flesh out the finish.

  • This was the first KB I ever bought. When visiting Michael Browne was back in January 2005, I bought a couple from him at the winery. I've had them laying down in the bottle paper wrapping since then. Took to dinner last night and just removed the cork and took a 1 oz pour from the bottle to taste before departing. At the restaurant, drank undecanted. Shared some wine with the somellier who told me that they would be serving 750s of the KB soon but that they had their first small supply of 2004 SC 375s this month and he said they sold out of them in less than a week (or some crazy short span like that). Good to see Mike and Dan get on their list!!

So, to the wine. I would offer that this wine is not yet ready to drink. Even the sommelier cmmented on the tannin. The wine shows violets, raspberry, citrusy notes and some minerality. I also detetected what would seem like a touch of stems on the nose.....did this wine see any inclusion? I plan to finish the last 8 ounces tonight and then will repost an edit to this TN but at last night's sitting, this wine was telling me another 2 years. I'm not saying this wine disappointed but it did not seem to show like many have indicated due to the youth. Me thinks I popped it too early.

Day 2: Drinking it now at home with dinner--different environment. Wine shows much like last night: you can smell the flowery/violet nose, and that stem inkling of stemminess--faint but that's what it reminds me of. The wine does show more sour cherry, raspberry with a little creaminess and that big citrusy feel on the finish, along with a faint toasty note. There is also a red apple skin, much like I recal the 2003 KB RRV having on it. Still showing some light tannin and with the acidity, I think this wine will be even better in 12-18 months. Would be curious to see aonther poster drink a bottle soon and post a TN to shadow with mine.

  • Fairly strong nose, shows very young. Really deep, intense notes of chocalatey red fruits, some heat. On the palate, a fair bit of tannin, full mouthfeel and some sweetness. A really nice wine, and paired nicely with a roasted chicken.

  • Dinner at Coup des Tartes with Hurvitz and Cohen. What more can I say. Continues to be an excellent bottle of wine.

  • Decanted for an hour before drinking. Had excellent fruit right from the start with a very nice finish. Went very well with grilled Salmon. Spent some time at the winery last week and barrel tasted the '04 Cohn. Looks like another winner will be on its way a year from now.

  • [The Harrison: striped bass c olives] Not decanted, drank over 2 hours. Ruby red color. Well-balanced. Lush red fruit, cranberry, dark cherry, and raspberry; spice and smoke. Very acidic. Cont'ed to evolve over the course of drinking. Prototypical RR Pinot. Great wine; drinking now, though has some life remaining. Have 1 bottle left; will decant the next for at least an hour.

  • Drank first of 2. Preferred to the Sonoma Coast 2003. Kept evolving in glass and went very well with grilled salmon. Deep red fruits with slightly earthy red-berry and cherry nose. Not as much spice as the Radio Coteau. Fairly long finish but with the slightest bit of excessive heat (wait another year for the next one). Probably ranking as 3rd favorite domestic pinot lately following RC and Flowers. Definitely a pinot that pleases.

  • Full ruby red. Nose of smoked meat, fresh vanillin. Palate very structured and complex, dark rasberry, orange rind, roasted nuts. Maintains vibrant acidity and backbone leading to a very long finish, with compelling balance. An impressive effort from Michael Browne.

  • Trifecta of Pinot's: 03 Loring Llama, 02 Kosta Browne Cohen, 01 Dumol RRV (Cafe Loupe NYC): Ruby red - the lightest ruby of the trio. Rose peddles, and very soft red fruit apparent on the nose with light coxing. Nose is very slightly muted - this is a young pup still with a HUGE upside. Showing some traces of brown sugar with a very soft mouth feel. Perfect slinky red dress tannins with some soy notes and Asian spice. Alcohol is perfectly hidden and the balance is Superb. Light as a feather weight boxer but has all the ingredients to be the next heavy weight champion of the world. In 3 word with an accent - Marvelous darling Marvelous.

  • Brilliant medium-ruby. Powerful bouquet of fresh sweet strawberries and cream, red fruits, and cola, carries through to a strawberry explosion on the palate with finishing notes of blueberry and root beer. A long and satisfying finish. Very pure and simply superb. Gets better and better in the glass. If you pop this one now, let it air as it takes about 45 minutes for the show to get started. Upon opening, the nose and palate display noticable heat which integrates with air.

  • Clean pastel red in color. The happy nose show's bright lively fruit with no coxing needed. Fresh cut, long stem, rose's do back-flipps out of my glass along with sweet cherry nuances and cherry pie fruit flavors. The nose is seducing, pulling me in to the palate of flavors including blueberry, boysenberry and lavender. Wow the layers - the strawberry shortcake and slightly tart binge cherry. The wine caresses my palate - spreading across in a soft, subtle, sexy way. The tannins are smooth and the finish is clean. What a fantastic effort as the finish leaves my palate in a slow enchanting way. This is my 3rd Kosta Browne and I just can’t enough.. Dan Kosta & Michael Browne and doing it right and if ya didn't know - know ya know.

  • Had with pasta, tomatoes and basil. Decanted about an hour with another hour to finish the bottle. The nose was very aromatic with roses and cloves. The fruit was dominated by deep plum and finished with rhubarb. The wine softened quite a bit over the two hours. Quite a good wine and much better than the '02 KB Sonoma Coast that I had last week. May call back to get a few more. 92 pts.

  • [Chicken, blue smoke sauce, peppers] Different from the first time. Started very earthy, blueberry on the nose and the palate; spice. Later developed aromas of strawberry jam and bright fruit. Great balance. Very rich. This is fabulous stuff and these guys are living the Dream.

  • Winery Tour and Tasting: Kosta-Browne (Sebastapol, CA): Begins with black cherry and mocha with an explosion of big bright fruit. Well balanced but huge for a pinot. Best wine of the day.

  • Tasted at Kosta Browne on Friday where Michael gave me the open bottle to take home and follow. Moderate and clean nose of cherries and pinot fruit. Color is a sparkling and clear medium ruby, very classic not deep or dense. Meduim body with a bit of well-integrated oak. Very focused and clean. Quite Burgundian, but not quite as acidic. Smooth tannins and a nice finish. Has enough structure to age but is delicious now. Nice wine.

  • Bright red fruit on nose with good spice components from both fruit and oak. Strawberry and Rainier cherry flavors, with good spice and reasonable acidity. Fruit and structure keep the wine's (probably) high alcohol in balance nicely. Moderate length. I'd suggest drinking 2005 or 2006.
