90 minute decant. Medium bodied with medium- acidity and tannins. Cedar and leather predominate on the nose and palate, underpinned by dark fruit. Tart, medium finish. Third bottle of three that were gifted. All three were marred by cork that immediately crumbled to bits and pieces and required near-surgery to remove and filtration afterwards. While the wine was pleasant enough, food friendly and a lists at a good PQR, the cork issue alone would deter me from buying any on my own.

Burnished light magenta. Spice, cedar, and burnt cherry nose. Light to medium bodied, tart cranberries, aged cherries, white pepper, woody tannins, good acid, and a tart, medium length finish. Got better the longer it was open.

Day 1: A bit better than the last time I opened a 13. Celery, raspberries, minerals and dust. Picks up some dill and mild oak on the finish. Good overall value. 87 points Day 2: Getting a little bettter. Very smooth overall with raspberries, mild dill, wood, spice and dust. Pleasant wine but does not offer the complexity and enjoyment of the 2021. 88 points Day 3: More Rioja like on day 3 with wood, dill, mild funk, dust, spice and earth. Not a bad effort on this bottle and much better than the last one I had. Still not 2021 level. 88+ Recommendation: Buy 2012 if you can over 13 but for under $15.00 a good value.

On the second day, out of recorked half-bottle, decanted an hour, this was really fine. Stylistically, it is semi-traditional, with old American oak, notes of the penicillin mold in the deep, cold Rioja cellars, and plenty of dark, warm, spicy fruit. Perhaps the 14% alcohol is a bit too noticeable in the finish. I am sure it would be great in 20 years if kept in a cold cellar. At the price point it can compete with a favourite like Cubillo and that's saying a lot.

I picked this up in Madrid and finally opened this for a virtual wine tasting on northern Spain wines. It was very delightful with fresh fruit, good, smooth structure, and a well-rounded mouthfeel. The finish was medium in length. I found the 2014 vintage at Total Wine and bought more.

Dark fruit is in the background to leather, smoke and fungus, but not in a bad way. When paired with a charcoal grilled bison rib eye, the wine finds its footing. It should be able to hold on a bit longer.

D+0h: a tiny, tiny bit of deposit in the filter and a tiny bit in the bottle, smells of almost nothing, perhaps mildly of blackberry D+3h: dark as ink, on the rim slightly purple red, doesn’t smell of much, perhaps a little bit of blackberry and violets, medium body, has a certain dash of residual sugar, so is not completely dry, smooth in the mouth with blackberry and violets, in the aftertaste blackberry, acidity and a little bit of violets, good length (30 sec), a wine without any rough edges that would make it interesting, rather boring.

Day 1: This is a disappointment compared to the 2012. Sour cherry, wood, spice, dried leaves and earth. Lacks concentration and personality. Short to medium finish. Pass. 83 points Day 2: Very similar to day 1. Not much evolution. 83 points Day 3: Definitely different and better but not great. Dill, wood, sour cherry, earth and dried leaves. Game, smoked meat, forest floor, black cherries, and plumb on the nose. The palate is full of under-ripe cherry, a bit of cocoa powder, a slight chalkiness, and a dash of leather. Took about an hour to open up in-glass.

Prominent sweet sandalwood, blackberry, vanilla, killer floral and perfume notes, but it's the black tea component that unifies this wine and gives it soul. High acidity and solid tannic structure that suggests this will age beautifully for at least 10 years. Super steely on PnP, but opened up after about 3-4 hours. The oak presence is significant at this stage, but should mellow and integrate with a couple of years of bottle age.

Dark ruby purple in color. Decanted for an hour and it really opened up. Very aromatic, with lots of oak and perfume, floral, mint. Full of flavors with a long finish. Cherry, pepper spice, mint. Lingering flavors of dark fruit and leather. A bit acidic, best paired with food and not drunk alone. We enjoyed with steak salad.

Dark garnet red color, liquorice, mild oak, tabacco, some spicy notes. Not the "overwhelming, full-bodied, black fruits and sweetness modern-style" but more on the black-tea, black olives and quite some acidity "old school rioja". Even better on day 2!

While I am normally a huge fan of this bodega, this may be the first bottle I've ever had from them that I really was not impressed by. Which naturally reflects the poor quality of the 2013 vintage. Even the Rioja DOCa rated the vintage 'Good.' (To be sure, had a meteor reduced the entire area to a smoking hole in the ground, the Council would have rated it Very Good but with 'reduced yields.')
And you taste that here. Quite austere, with little fruit to speak of and virtually nothing for your nose. And no amount of air seems to be helping. I may try another bottle just to make sure I didn't get a lemon, but I am not hopeful.

Opened and drunk out of Zalto universal glasses over one hour. This is a cross of oldfashioned and modern Rioja, with notes of American oak and thick dark fruit with some complexity. Acidity isn't high, as in the Lopez de Heredia wines, so I wonder how it will age. A very respectable effort, easy-drinking, nice. I think it pleases me even more than the 2009.

Full body, deep cherry color. Intense ripe fruits, cinnamon, balsamic notes and spicy wood aroma. Starts bitter cherry palate continues to dried plum and lingering juicy finish. Rich and complex, well balanced, silky texture, live berries acidity and gentle tannins. Food friendly, best match is rice with grilled poultry. Open about one hour ahead. Serve 17º - 20º. SIA Wine Week; 3/12/2018-3/16/2018 (Singapore Airlines): deep ruby; quite tannic, has some intensity, but a good alcohol burn; cassis, black cherries, cedar, earthy, grass, flint, coffee; I’d say nice, but would have expected more flavour and intensity from a Rioja Reserva...

Gently translucent ruby red color. Quite woody and slightly pruney nose with aromas of ripe slightly wizened blackcurrants, a little bit of plummy fruit, a hint of vanilla-driven sweet American oak and a touch of leather. Overall pretty classic Rioja nose. The wine is full-bodied, ripe-fruited and quite extracted on the palate with somewhat sweet-toned flavors of succulent plums, toasty oak, some strawberry tones, a little bit of toffee, a hint of liquorice and a lactic touch of blueberry yoghurt. The wine is high in acidity with quite gentle medium tannins. The finish is long and nuanced with flavors of vanilla, toasty mocha oak, sweet plummy fruit, a little bit of leather and a hint of sweet, pruney character.
A big, rich and concentrated but also rather predictable Rioja Reserva. Shows surprisingly much ripeness, making the wine feels quite big and sweet in style, reminiscent more of Ribera del Duero than classic Rioja. Not a bad wine in any way, just a little bit mundane. A reliable choice if you like classic, vanilla-driven Rioja wines with some oomph. Hopefully loses its (faint) lactic notes and most prominent oak characteristics with some cellar age. Priced according to its quality at 19,99€.

Pours ruby red, thin looking, no legs. Straightforward nose of cranberry, chocolate, leather chair, musky perfume; good aromas, though lacking elegance or refinement. First taste is much thinner than expected, and very hot from alcohol. Palate is dry, extremely chalky, lacking depth and any particular fruit flavors, maybe cherry.
I prefer the bottom shelf Proximo Riscal to this wine, irrespective of price. That this wine is 2-3 times the price of its younger sibling seems unfair.

A repetir!

Kraftig. Mye eik også på smak. Fortsatt litt tanniner. Sitter relativt lenge igjen i munnen.
God, men litt mye eik.

A repetir!

Vino Volo on 23SEP17: Great tobacco and leathery notes on the nose, fulfilled in opening. Wine opened with about 30 mins. in the glass to have nice body and length, and the fruit notes balanced the spice/tobacco/leather very well. Thoroughly enjoyed. 92
