2019 Terredora di Paolo Aglianico Campania IGT

Not quite sure what to make of this. It is Old World to be sure… very sharp acidity, and pervasive — if fine-grained — tannins. Fruit is very subdued. Gave it three+ hours in a ship’s decanter, which took some of the edge off, but only some. The thing is, LdH red Riojas open up the same way, and they need 20 years of bottle age before they show best. Perhaps this may need more softening years as well.
I did not find any of the Aglianico typicity I’m usually looking for, though. The graham cracker in particular that Mastroberardino and Mollettieri do so well was wholly absent.
No rating, as I don’t know this producer well enough to say what it is they were going for, and how long it may need in the cellar before it achieves it.

2018 Terre di Valter Taurasi
4/29/2023 - ProperClaret Does not like this wine:
Over-extracted to a level I did not even think possible. More similar to a cheap California Zinfandel than anything resembling an Old World titan like Aglianico. Tried it at opening, decanted it for three hours. Cali Kool Aid.

2011 Bodegas Carlos Serres Rioja Gran Reserva
12/10/2021 - ProperClaret Does not like this wine:
As a grocery-store Bordeaux, this was adequate. Of course, I intended to buy a Rioja, so there’s that. It’s unfortunately quite modern, so any relationship to Rioja is by virtue of the label only. It’s not a sicky fruit bomb like CUNE, mind you, but I would bet my lungs it’s not seen the first barrel of proper American oak in its lifetime. Nor do I taste any indigenous yeasts either. Pass.
