  • Premier Cru Table (The Fifth Avenue Hotel): 01735/15482. Superb blue and jungle fruit nose with extra spice. Tough competition in this vintage against the RSV, however. 94

  • Blockbuster that blinded would suggest a fantastic vintage. Intense stem floral aromatics with lift. Broad, red fruited palate that just keeps going. Wow. (12157/15482)

  • The provenance and preservation of this bottle is very reliable, so this bottle is in very good condition.

To my surprise, the new drc turned out to be approachable. Blue fruits, floral bouquet, a little earthy. On the palate, it has a fleshy feeling, and the power of tanning is noticeable, but which blends well with the body. 12853

  • At beginning the nose is unique for Richebourg, light tea fragrance and the wine was quite close. After 2 hours of sitting in glass the wine started to open up and drank beautifully. It's not as robust as the 2009 vintage that was drunk in parallel. Quite like to slightly lighter character .

  • Dégustation Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Verticale 2017, avec Déjeuner (1243 Bourgogne Society - Beaune): Sit down tasting. Once again unmistakably Vosne-styled with its Asian five spice character, but both bigger and more density than Romanée St. Vivant. At the same time, it is also less easily accessible or pleasurable at this point in time, with lots more structure from middle-through-finish. A very long finish is not perfectly harmonious today but is hinting at the wine's great potential, 2030 forward.

  • Etxebarri lunch. This was my wine of the afternoon. Light with beautiful fruit and openness. It opened up much faster than expected and was great within 15-30 minutes of opening. What a beautiful place with incredible food and wine.

  • Opened at etxebarri and initially this was tight and tannic but within an hour this softened to reveal a beautiful floral (quite primary) nose which was very light but delicious with great fruit concentration. Drank next to a Lachaux Echezeaux this was clearly the better and more structured wine DRC’s always seem to deliver. I was quite surprised how well this drank at this stage for a Richebourg. The 17’s are clearly here to delight and will get so much better.

  • Complete DRC Vintage Horizontals 2017 vs 2018: Since Covid didn’t allow for a proper arrivage tasting last year, we tasted the 2017s in direct taste-offs vs their 2018 counterparts this year. All bottles were opened a few hours earlier, not decanted but we got enough time to follow each wine over 45+ minutes in the glass which allowed for proper aeration and analysis. A few observations: 1) The 2017s are disarmingly easy to drink, charming, soft and open. 2) The 2018 show more depth but will need more time to flesh out, open up and become rounder. 3) Best ever Cortons. Slowly but surely they grow into their allocation (not market) price. 4) The showstopping RSVs edge out the Richebourgs with the purest fruit expression vs raw and today a bit unintegrated power. 5) The La Taches and RCs are playing in their own category in terms of complexity but the RCs are a bit closed. 6) The Montrachets are fabulous with a sharp, complex and complete 2017 as a consensus WOTN and a 2018 which is a bit broader but still amazing.

TN: At first a typical sexy Richebourg nose full of fruit and burnt sugar with the same sweetness and sexiness also dominating on the palate. But after just a few minutes the wine started to shut down a bit, got less integrated, showed some rough edges and a little bit astringent. More vegetal aromas at the center. Both Richebourg vintages did not sing tonight, showed less layered than the RSVs and at this stage were more about raw power than finesse.

  • Juicy, chalky, extremely elegant, light on its feat - intense wine, that goes on, many layers here. Guessed the vintage, these 2017's are incredible open right now.
