Vertical wine tasting of Meursault Clos de la Barre by Domaine des Comtes Lafon.
2000 vintage demonstrates powerful nose with beautiful aromas lacking density on the palate. Very clean, intense fruit with aromas of flowers and white fruit. Unfortunately aromas faded away in 15 minutes and that was a great disappointment.

Pale gold. Incredibly fresh nose of white flowers, stonefruit, fresh cut grass, slate, and some lemony citrus. Loads of yellow apple fruit on the palate in addition to great slatey minerality. Remarkably fresh. High acid. Didn't take proper notes but this was absolutely perfect to pair with a Hawaiian fish curry. Crowd pleasing and a pleasant surprise.

Best bottle I have had in at least 5+ years, this showed ripe apple on nose and palate, but with perfectly aged spice and overall depth. Exactly what we want from this wine at this age,

on a root day; Italian source; slightly premox-ed; golden yellow with some greenness at back; lack the fine acidity and finish some bitter; not fat at all

Excellent condition. Pale yellow. Good citrus acidity, but fruit less prominent than expected. No oxidative elements, but little aggression or tension either. Slightly bland compared to the 2001. Enjoyable on its own and with fresh asparagus.

White Burgundy tasting (Rotterdam, Netherlands): A last minute addition by a late arriving compatriot, this was popped and poured. By contrast, this wine is medium-plus intense golden yellow at the core and fades to a watery rim. The nose displays medium-plus intense notes of butterscotch, candied citrus rind, marc de Bourgogne and browning apples. It is medium-plus bodied, but the medium-plus acidity sticks out somewhat because of the slightly inadequate mid-palate buffering. The barely medium intense flavours of bruised fruits, Oloroso Sherry and a hint of hazelnut cannot disguise the texture-spoiling phenolic edge, which causes an overall lack of charm. In short; this wine is past its best, which is further illustrated by its fraying 10-15 second finish. To attach a point value to this p’ox victim feels like flogging a dead horse, so if you feel you really have to I’ll leave that to your imagination...... TN Mike de Lange.

Lieu-dit Cru Bastille Day Suchots Dinner (RIA in Chicago): Seemed slightly reductive to start, but some good floral notes emerged with some time in glass. Tasted blind (along with the 2002 vintage of the same wine), our group guessed these were from Puligny, given their density, minerality and richness. Quite nice but somewhat short, this just showed less of everything than the 02 in the next glass.

extremely expressive upon opening; re-cork it after 30 mins; creamy, nutty and honey initially turns into sublime acidity; complex and dynamic bouquet though a little bit thin in floral angle; mid+ body; an exceptional village Lafon!

Tense lemon and young hazelnut notes. Mineral-laden, streamlined palate. Juicy acidic backbone. A bit of a Lafon oxidative component to the finish, which disappears as the wine plays nicely with some offal. Some hidden Meursault fatness, but still drinking young.

Yellow with greenish hue. Delightful aromas of nuts and honey. Medium bodied and well crafted, this wine is delicious to drink now, but will probably hold up for a good 5-10 years. I love the gentle qualities combined with the impressive size and long aftertaste.

Archetypal Meursault. Butter and hazelnuts. A nice line of minerality keeps it interesting. Drink up

Lafon 1er Cru and Méo-Camuzet Vosne-Romanée Aux Brulées Dinner (Les Nomades - Chicago IL): Served blind to the group, I knew the flight but not which wine was in each glass. Tired nose, more lively flavors with good density. Knowing there was one Villages level, I thought this would be it, which also helped me identify each wine in the flight correctly.

Blind White Tasting with Top 2000 White Burgundy (Les Nomades - Chicago IL): Mature yellow and green apple. Tasty and fun, yet not quite as interesting and complete as previous bottles, so it is definitely time to drink up.

Friday Night Dinner with Friends (Chez Schmidt - Chicago IL): Much like another bottle tried a few weeks ago from a different source. Lots of ripe and sweet fruit, still vibrant and fresh.

Some Wine Tasted at the Zachys Auction; 3/13/2014-3/14/2014 (RN74 - San Francisco CA): Tasting pour, brief note. Lots of ripe stone fruit with some apple hints. Nicely floral and rounded, with impressive density for Villages level. Still drinking young.

Exceptional balance taste with a bit of buttery on the nose, but not excessive. Very smooth and silky. Drinkable by 2013.

HK Children's Skin Foundation Inaugural Charity Wine Dinner & Wine Auction (Tianshan & Luanshan Rooms, Island Shangri-La Hotel, Hong Kong): Light white gold colour but with some depth. Nose is light, lifted citrus and minerals. Palate is lemons, lemon zest and lemon juice together with some distinct minerality. A bit too acidic. Enjoyable but young. The Leflaive Pulignigny-Motrachetet 1er Cru Les Pucelles 2004 that followed was on the same "too young" theme but a definite step up.
