A lost Friday afternoon gathering – Richebourg, Chablis, CDC and etc. (Blacksalt, Washington DC): Perfectly mature nose displaying sweet black fruit, essence of blackberry, a hint of strawberry candy, strong DRC stem, caramel, Chinese medicine, tea, cedar, cinnamon, fully developed sous bois and earth. Perfectly integrate palate, layers upon layers of subtle sweet black fruit, silky and fluid, medium acidity, earthy mineral and a long sweet black fruit driven finish with tea and Chinese medicinal herbs at the end. What I love about DRC, which I typically do not get in other Burgundy, is the haunting smell when there is only a drop left in the glass. It clearly expresses all the components, sous bois, Vosne spices, cinnamon and etc. Absolutely gorgeous showing, all the telltale signs of the domaine.

2006 RC and 2006 DRC Montrachet dinner - Stanley Cup Final (Proof Restaurant - Washington DC): Beautiful nose displaying sweet black fruit, blackberry jam, sous bois, Vosne spices and tree bark. Medium concentration, silky and polished, medium acidity and earthy mineral and a medium long black fruit driven finish. It is slightly hollow in the middle. Nevertheless, drinking beautifully. Truly a pleasant surprise and a great way to end the evening.

DRC Holiday Party; 12/17/2015-12/18/2015 (Mintwood): This bottle of much maligned '94 really wasn't bad at all next to the rest of the lineup. I'm sure it was one of the best Eches made that year, and this bottle came off as totally mature, ready to go, especially when compared to the somewhat closed down '93 next to it. Wet earth, subtle spice, not very complicated but certainly not disappointing at all given the year.

Hans Kruger Classic (Suite 100): I think I've had this 4 or so times prior and none being all that amazing. This one however is very impressive. The nose is the least favorite, limited to earthy minerality and spice. The palate is very powerful with gripping, dusty tannins right off the bat. Crisp, cleansing acidity follows, then a ripe burst of cherry and red currants. Hmm, interesting. Opens up to some nice spiciness and more ripe berry fruit. The earthiness on nose eventually integrates with the berries. While not as complete as a few others tried tonight, this one might turn into an extremely nice bottle. Hopefully I'll try again in a few years.

Hans Kreuger Selections: Very acidic. Not much in the way of fruit left, mostly sour cherries. Tannins dominating. I didn't really enjoy this, it seemed over the hill to me. Low 80's.

Barbecue with friends and a humble winemaker (Somewhere Downtown!): Had the '94 GE about a year ago and remembering: this is DRC?? Same with this bottling, but I guess you would get these results in a poor vintage. Overall, unexciting. Not too much going on. The nose is somewhat pleasant with some warm spices and underripe raspberries with some earthy qualities. The palate is uneventful and somewhat thin. Oh well, there were more DRC's after this one that were much more impressive.

Visit to Domaine de la Romanée-Conti (Burgundy, France): Wine now 2 months in bottle. Quite dark, full appearance. Powerful aromas - layers of fruit and oak. Rich, spicey dark berry fruits over oak - already great harmony - and a very long finish. This wine is most impressive - will continue to improve and be attractive for at least a dozen years. Excellent! This wine typifies the quality we experienced in the 1994's - and they just got better and better as we moved up the scale.
