Vantre 11th Arrondissement Paris Chose this while perusing the hardback bound wine list which reads like a novel - in a similar vein to Rekondo in San Sebastian. 2015, 2016, 2017 were available. 2016 was chosen on the sommelier’s advice.
I have previously had one encounter with Ghislaine Barthod in the form of the 2014 Bourgogne Rouge. Therefore when I saw this on the wine list at a very reasonable 165 euros I thought I had to try it. Especially when pigeon wellington was on the menu!
Significantly darker hue compared to the Bourgogne rouge. This wine wow-ed us from the get go and improved with time. On the nose this had plum and cherries. What I really loved were the notes of truffle and sous-bois. Oak was present like a good bass.
On the palate this had layers of fruit. Perfect acidity and well judged oak. Finishing very nicely. I suspect the only giveaway to its village origin were the slightly grainy tannins. To me the nose and palate were much more regal than its village destination.
The last drop was savoured and hope to drink more from this domaine.

Black cherries, rich and concentrated wine, compared to the 2012 Barthod Villages tasted just before, this is less open. Very good, but better to keep it 2 - 3 year’s longer.

Tight and stony is a good descriptor. Nevertheless this gave pleasure on the first night, with super pure fruit somewhere in the middle of the red/black fruit spectrum. On night two, however, this clamped down hard, almost like a young Barolo. Woah!

It is tight and stony, barely emitting a whiff of fresh cherry. With air there are purple flowers, and it is seriously stony. There’s mid-palate flesh and excellent cut. Fresh fruits and flowers resonate.

Black fruit: black cherries, blackberries, black current. Concentrated and dense with a nice salinity. Compared to the 2015 Barthod Chambolle I drank yesterday (mix of red and black fruit), this is totally on the black fruit spectrum and even more concentrated. Clearly on 1er Cru level. Drinking already (very) well and will be in excellent shape over the next 10 years.

Bright crimson/ruby appearance. Nose: sour cherries, cranberries and some mushrooms.
Palate: a bit tart but appealing. Bright acidity. Lovely elegance as expected for a C-M. Approachable now but I would give it at least another 3-5 years

A bottle drunk over three evenings. Deep dark ruby. A bright, breezy nose of blackberries, blackcurrants, dark cherries and dark spices. On palate, sparkling, focused acidity. Crunchy dark berried fruit. Slatey minerality. Liquorice and dried herbs. Fine and elegant but with decent body and volume for this level. Austere and shutting down - I thought - with a core of iron. Very Barthod. Best on the third evening and with food. It really needs 2-3+ more years. An excellent Villages Chambolle!

To much oak for my tastebuds. Hard to believe time will soften it, taking into consideration the fairly lightness of the underlying wine.

A bit closed and tannic which surprised me. Slightly wondering whether the bottle was corked.

Beginning to close down. Typical Barthod lean and focused. Very elegant and feminine.
