Vantre 11th Arrondissement Paris Chose this while perusing the hardback bound wine list which reads like a novel - in a similar vein to Rekondo in San Sebastian. 2015, 2016, 2017 were available. 2016 was chosen on the sommelier’s advice.
I have previously had one encounter with Ghislaine Barthod in the form of the 2014 Bourgogne Rouge. Therefore when I saw this on the wine list at a very reasonable 165 euros I thought I had to try it. Especially when pigeon wellington was on the menu!
Significantly darker hue compared to the Bourgogne rouge. This wine wow-ed us from the get go and improved with time. On the nose this had plum and cherries. What I really loved were the notes of truffle and sous-bois. Oak was present like a good bass.
On the palate this had layers of fruit. Perfect acidity and well judged oak. Finishing very nicely. I suspect the only giveaway to its village origin were the slightly grainy tannins. To me the nose and palate were much more regal than its village destination.
The last drop was savoured and hope to drink more from this domaine.

Black cherries, rich and concentrated wine, compared to the 2012 Barthod Villages tasted just before, this is less open. Very good, but better to keep it 2 - 3 year’s longer.

Tight and stony is a good descriptor. Nevertheless this gave pleasure on the first night, with super pure fruit somewhere in the middle of the red/black fruit spectrum. On night two, however, this clamped down hard, almost like a young Barolo. Woah!

To much oak for my tastebuds. Hard to believe time will soften it, taking into consideration the fairly lightness of the underlying wine.
