An old wine especially compared to the Ornellaia of the same year which we had in parallel. Red color with brownish borders, elegant nose dominated by secondary aromas. More elegant and round than powerful - the usual fruity bouquet with the dominant cherry note which I like so much is missing now. But the wine offers still a lot of drinking pleasure: vanilla, mocca, some dark fruits, tobacco - all in harmony. Medium and velvet finish. I recommend to drink up within a year or so.

From magnum. A friend was gracious enough to open this while we were visiting. Sweet red cherry fruit with woody notes. Earth, leaf. Very balanced with plenty of acid so a good food wine. We had with buttered scallops which is better than it sounds because the richness of the meal was complemented by the incisiveness of the wine. This is in a great drinking spot right now.

Medium garnet, medium plus bricking. The nose is mature and complex but somewhat low intensity wafting dry hay, dried dark cherry, old leather, charcoal, and dried rosemary. The palate enters on sweet dried fruit, with impressively high tannin, medium to medium plus, with medium acid. The finish is a touch clipped replaying dry hay and and dry cherry.

Past peak?

San Diego WineSpectator.com Offline, 7/15/2017 (Sbicca Restaurant, Del Mar, California): Decanted. Clear dark inky garnet color. Brooding bouquet of dusty black cherries, boysenberries, creme de cassis, old leather, stony red soil. Full body, balanced, seamless, pleasantly tart, lingering finish. Outstanding wine. As another Cellartracker note suggests, this is easy to confuse with a nice bordeaux. I will be on the lookout for this, to enjoy with a steak or pasta and red sauce.

Immediately the nose was wonderful and exotic with cedar, spices, and tart berry. The body and flavors took some time to come around and when they did, this was medium bodied and very juicy. No funkiness to be found which was disappointing.

Had it double blind and put it at an excellent 20 y.o. Right bank Bordeaux. It is at top form now - properly juicy brambly fruits with a hint of menthol and smoke (no barnyard at all). Medium, very elegant and round body, had an overall feel of friendliness and cheerlfullness, which in retrospect should have also lead to Supertuscany. Hedonistic but not overdone. You will crave more of it.

Dark rosewood color. Nose of blueberry pie, ash, bitumen, red rocks and paprika. Palate has a smooth entry and a rich, oily midpalate, with a slightly hot and faintly bitter finish that lingers at the back of the mouth. Overall this is nuanced, balanced, and pulsing with life at 21 years old. It's easy to dismiss these wines when they're tasted young, but time reveals why the reputation persists.

91 pts

From magnum this looks supremely youthful. It is a little cheesy to begin with but breathes up to show bright, sweet cassis fruit coupled with some cedar, flora and tobacco. It is generous in the mouth with good flesh. It finishes with relatively sweet tannins.

Aerated to decanter for 2 hours, returned to bottle, served non-blind.
Every once in a while I have to pause before entering a tn - when the tasting notes that have been written before mine just don't align with what I experienced. If I read through the notes (and the current CT avg of 90.2), it's almost as if I was drinking a completely different wine than everyone else, insofar as this was absolutely stunning, fully evolved and radiating elegance and balance. The mouth-feel akin to the finest aged Burgundy, the depth of fruit, similar to that of a classed Bordeaux from a top vintage. Medium-bodied, with tannins that seem to hover around the sweet core of fruit, silently but expertly doing their job. Acids, fruit and tannins remain in excellent proportion, allowing this to be vibrant and deep, yet weightless, lingering, yet clean. A classic example of 'no great wines, just great bottles'. Aged tobacco, soft red currant, grilled herbs, cocoa powder. Hoping your next bottle is just as good. Drink thru 2021, very highly recommended

A dark opaque wine with dark core and aged rims revealing a browned brick like hue. Very opulent nose of plums, dried dark cherries, tobacco, cedar, humid undergrowth, roasted meats, old leather, smoke, menthol, and spices. On the palate the wine is quite elegant, though it is hard not to ignore its maturity, perhaps its last breath? Very dark on entry revealing plums, dark cherries, blackberries that give way to a broad midpalate that evokes flavors of raspberries, licorice, dark chocolate, roasted coffee, along with some acidity. The finish is of moderate length where the tannins have fully integrated, there are flavors of roasted meat juices, bitter chocolate, hints of mint, creamy vanilla, and marked minerality. This mid bodied wine has seen better days, however it was still a pleasure to drink.

Quite reserved at first. Sour cherries, meat, dried herbs, chocolate and cacao powder. Fullbodied and chewy palate with balanced acidity and good tannic bite. Juicy fruit, but as a whole this feels rather monolithic. Maybe this just needs time? Not that approachable at the moment. Robust vintage.

Medium red. There was a slight bit of sweetness here that made me think Napa. Mineral and red cherry fruit are there with a lot of earthiness. A very nice slighlty sweet red fruit and earth mouth and a nice balanced finish. An elegant wine in a very good place.

Bill's Monthly Lunch - March 2012 (Vancouver, BC): Tasted blind – medium red, bricking at the rim. Really nice nose that has notes of poopy funk, cherries and earth. Soft in the mouth with beautifully resolved tannins, nice acidity and mature flavours of cherries, earth and tobacco. This is well-balanced and smooth and drinking really well right now. I don’t see this getting any better. Excellent.

Dark ruby colour, brick rim. Nose starts with a very clear cherry however quickly moves into a more mature state showing leather, barnyard, earth. Nice fruit with OK acid to match it, the finish is great - the secondary aromas are more in the background on the palate comparing it with the nose. Tannins well present still.
A nice complex Tignanello which is fully mature in my opinion. It could have had more of that nice fruit, the balance would have improved indeed. No need to wait for this - enjoy it as it is, I doubt it will improve over the next few year. This bottle was, however, a bit better than my previous - but it lack that extra piece of personality.

Ruby colour, in the dark direction, with hints of brick at the edges. Cherries (sour) and black currant, some leather and barnyard. Oak is also present on the nose, a touch too much in my opinion. On the palate the sour cherries are more present, the acid is remarkable still with nice tannins which actually could soften slightly more. The problem might be that the fruit is OK and nothing more hence I doubt that the further potential is significant speaking of flavours. Moderate finish.
Compared to the -95 this is one lighter, less fruit and lacks some complexity. I would say drink up over the next few years, it is still good but nothing more.

Looks: Deep red, and towards brick red and brownish to the rim. Smell: Blackcurrant flowers! Barnyard, wet autumn forestground and with well integrated toasted oak. Taste: Deep warmly taste of sweet red berrys(wild small strawberry and rasberry and Rips?) the nice use of oak again and and really a flowering mouthfeeling. Stays for a long time in the mouth and goes very well both with high mountain beef and spicy lamb meetballs. A very nice wine, but has needed its 15 years in the cellar.
