Easter Saturday (Chicago, IL): Quite burly, even after having been put in a decanter for a few hours. Far better than many other experiences I've had with Rostaing (Ampodium comes to mind), but this doesn't really have the expressiveness that I would want a Côte-Rôtie to have. Half of me wonders if it's because of the big vintage that this feels how it does, but the other half thinks it's just because it's Rostaing. I have to admit, I've never liked or understood the wines, and truth be told, despite this one being not unpleasant like so many of my prior experiences, I just can't get excited about it.

93-94 pts

Its been 12 years since we had this last ( Papies 92) and its interesting to see this so reductive and almost like it has retraced and buttoned down in its own shell. Very dark , dark fruit, soft smoky, big but also lacking a bit of charm at this stage. Not helped by the excellent 2000 vintage of this that was served side by side ( Papies 96) . Needs more time we feel. 91ish for now

Northern Rhone Night (Song Ling Building): Pretty good. A world of a difference from the tremendous 1990 Rostaing we had alongside, but this was quite nice in its own right. The nose was very youthful indeed, with touches of herb and spice swirling around a core of sweet blackberries, raspberries and cherries, touched with notes of violets and roses, and just a little sprinkle of spice at the sides. Attractive, but still surprisingly primary. The palate was where this shone though. It felt a whole lot nobler, more serious, with a lovely depth to its delicious flavours black cherries and sappy tones of plums and wild berries, playing against a backdrop of fresh acidity and fine-boned tannins. Fine without being really elegant or silky - there was still a certain masculine strength to it. Very nice though. Good finish too, with little notes of graphite and earth and spice amidst the fruit. This was yummy stuff, drinking nicely now, but with its best years clearly a decade or so ahead of it.

2005 Cote Rotie La La & Co. - 15 years of age: Tasted blind. Dark ruby, young and. Nose of dark fruit and torrefaction. Gets a bit more airy as it sits in the glass. The palate gets a bit lighter towards the finish. Good lift. Does not sing like the stellar 2010.

Decanted first 15 minutes before serving. Could have done with a couple of hours. Dark berries, under brush, earth and spices on the nose and palate. Fruit is sweet but there is good line and length to the wine thanks to some slightly tangy acidity. Polished in the mouth with some plucky powdery tannins still persisting in the finish. Finishes clean with a hint of sweetness. A well crafted wine and very good Landonne. Drink or hold.

Quite dark on the nose with dark berries, savory flavors, herbs, and a bit of heat. Dark fruit, olives, bacon, dark flavors, and bitter orange on the palate. Good finish. A nice wine, but overshadowed by 02 and 07 Chave and 04 Allemand Reynard that night. May be a higher score by itself.

I was afraid this may not be ready, but it was drinking very well. Medium dark fruit, violets, roast meat, black pepper. Nicely balanced with good acidity and very fine tannin. This should drink well for another few years.

This is impressively balanced on the palate, with ripe fruit, medium plus acidity and fine tannins. Entering the drinking window and there is enough underlying structure to indicate this is on an upward trajectory.

A reticent nose offers an appealing but subtle mix of dark fruit, roast meat, and iron. Light on the palate, with savory flavors, crisp acidity, and surprisingly elegant tannins. Doesn't offer significant persistence on the finish.

I was really nervous about this bottle based on previous reviews, but this bottle was just stunning. Beautiful nose with loads of floral notes, plus violets, game, olive brine, and some smoke. On the palate, rather creamy, almost like a Cayuse syrah, with loads of blackberry and olives, with good salinity. Still very tannic on the very nice finish.
I can only imagine those who found this thin on the palate had off bottles. Still very primary, and will improve if it develops secondary notes.

Pnp. Classic Northern Rhone Syrah nose. Elegant, pure and surprisingly accessible palate. Crushed, dark berries in harmony with olive, charcoal and iron. Ample acid to lift overall impression. Complex. Very long finish. Not going anywhere but undeniably in a spectacular place now. Absolutely delicious.

I paid decent money for this wine and honestly it was a bit disappointing. On the positive side, the wine had smooth and silky mouthfeel. From start to finish it was consistently consistent.
On the negative, I found this wine to be extremely thin and one dimensional. I got little to no bouquet and the wine lacked any kind of depth that I would have expected from a wine made with these grapes. On the finish I got some hard gripping tanins. Maybe some time in the bottle will fix that, but honestly I don't know if waiting any longer will improve this wine.
Edit: Day two and this wine is coming together nicely. Incredibly smooth and silky mouthfeel which I love. The nose is still very muted which is a disappointment but the palate is amazing. Red fruit and a subtle sweetness with a long finish. I'm liking it.

Same color as the regular cuvee. Less forthcoming on both the nose and the palate. Harder to read at this point, but the biggest difference seems to be more noticeable wood rather than any more depth or length.

Double decanted 6 hours before drinking. A wonderful expression of La Landonne. Although Rostaing uses roto-fermenters, his extractions are always soft and elegant, with a low percentage of new oak. The nose is complex, with sweet dark fruit, smoked meats, violets and tapenade. The palate reveals good intensity of flavour, smooth and silky tannins and some focused acidity. A refined and tasty Cote Rotie that is entering it's drinking window after plenty of air time. Will be better in 5+ years, but far from a crime to open now if you have a few.

Sweet, and smooth. Lots of plum, burnt black cherry, burnt wood, leather, some smoke but not overpowering. Figs and some pine / juniper notes in the astringent finish. This has a long life ahead of it. After it was open for 2 hours it developed more of the meaty / smoky characteristics one would expect of a well-aged cote-rotie. Lovely wine all the way around, and will be really stunning in a few years.
