my second btl (of 2 total)... this was nice and essentially a repeat of the first... nice wine but a little past peak, glad to see the 'drink date' working on CellarTracker... my '01's and my '07's are showing those wines can last another decade or two but the '03 drink dates says it is at the end of its life -- with which I agree, would have been better 5 years ago, it was a hot vintage and the wine showed it, nice citrus and petrol but enough lift / tension / brightness for my taste

A lot of petrol in this vintage, of which Clos Ste. Hune usually only displays traces. Fat and unctuous and low in acidity, not surprisingly given the torrid vintage conditions. To drink ASAP since it may fall apart relatively early. Still, it’s flavorful and quite interesting.

Medium gold color. Initially shy nose of lime and peach. Palate shows ripe peach and guava with some coaxing. After 30 minutes in glass, this starts to build a mineral bass note that amplifies the peach, adds in some floral notes and fills in some blanks. Continued to build through the two hours I sipped on it. This didn't disappoint. Left half bottle for second day. Drink or hold.

Not lasting the distance. Soft and now lacking the typical acidity and structure of CSH. Round, powerful ripe fruit. Good depth; enjoyable. Good wine for the vintage, average enough (at this stage) for a CSH.

Warm vintage. Fruitier. Some petrol. Less acidity. Sweet flowers on the nose and a lot of petrol on the palate. Least favorite in the flight. Good to drink younger - doesnt have the acidity to age.

What a difference time in the cellar has made since my last bottle 6 years ago. PNP. This was glorious from the first sip and continued to evolve with each subsequent sip. Glorious ripe bouquet with a beautifully balanced viscous palate and lengthy finish. Proof once again that great wine makers make great wines even in bad vintages.

Clos Ste Hune vertical 83-09 with Anne Trimbach. Historic vineyard of only 1,67 ha in the village of Hunawihr in central Alsace. Limestone soil, cool southeast position with morning sun.
"HOTTEST" vintage, earliest harvest since 1560, records date back to 1180. Warm and dry summer with +40 temperatures, less acidity, different balance, this bottle a little tired.
Rich and mature nose, botrytis character. Still a dry mouthfeel with hints of sweetness. Drink now

very nice bottle, I thought better on the pop and pour when I sensed slightly higher tension, acidity?, verve, but Tiffany said it had a petrol / funk finish (which she doesn't like), she in turn liked it more after an hour in decanter when she said it had just a hint of sweetness for balance... very nice wine but feels like it should be consumed near term, a little softer / rounder than I would like

A swathe of European 2003s (Chicago, IL): A rather fat and large scaled expression of riesling. This is a powerful and muscular wine. The nose shows a fair bit of herbaceousness as well. On the palate, this wine is somehow sweet but without residual sugar. There's acidity, but the odd thing is that it isn't the driving force behind the wine (especially weird in riesling). The fruit profile here is quite tropical, with some pineapple notes. Perhaps more interesting than good, at least, to my palate.

Trimbach Clos Ste. Hune & Cuvee Frederic Emile Vertical with James Handford MW (Handford Wines, London): Decent golden hue on the colour front. Quite a bit of “petrolly” feel, ripe feel. Good acidity keeps the ripeness in check and this had the hallmarks of CstH, the big acidity yet very polished and elegant. Alive and sharp, complex and giving even at this young age. Maybe one of the few vintages to start drinking younger? Really a beautiful wine to drink now and very enjoyable. Not sure how this ages to be honest though. 92-93 now

Medium gold color. Decanted off of bit of cork that fell in during removal. Rich aromas of lemon meringue, kerosene, and flowers. Palate has ripe lemon curd, sweet kerosene, cherry, lime candy, and stone elements that carry into a long finish. This has some viscosity to it and is ripe for a Hune. Drinking very well and in a pretty good place. Does it get profound with age? Maybe. Very enjoyable now, however.

Golden yellow, plentiful petrol aromas on the nose. While this wine is dry, there is a certain ripeness and plushness to this which isn't particularly characteristic, and likely reflects the vintage. Still elegant, and still special- easily my favorite riesling from Alsace.

Medium yellow. Combination of stone fruit and tangerine with an unusual component of vanilla and a bit of petrol. Positively glossy for Clos Ste. Hune, full bodied. Delicious pure fruit with some spice. Moderate acidity but typical finishing soil and minerality. Much more satisfying and successful than the last bottle, which I'm sure was off. All in all, quite an accomplishment for the vintage. Two out of three experiences with this were positive.

The Gilded Man (Aalborg, Denmark): Impossible to identify as Clos St. Hune - the hot vintage materializes and put a considerable damper on the razor-like acid that tend to characterize this wine. I very good glass of Riesling ,though, and quite approachable for a Clos St. Hune.

Rather broad and fleshy for Hune, but it's very well balanced and lovely to drink now. A scent of petrol and smoke leads into a palate full of fresh pear and citrus fruits over a crystalline mineral base. The acidity's not particularly high here but the balance is very good, and I'd imagine this will keep aging quite nicely.

In the Name of Science (Heirloom Cafe, San Francisco): Medium yellow. Some mature Riesling aromas but tainted by mustiness that I was convinced represented low level TCA. The majority of tasters did not agree with this assessment though. Rich and a sense of ripe fruit and glyceral texture, but not nearly as pure and focused as the bottle I had last month. Very disappointing-is this the weirdness and bottle variation of 2003, or was this truly flawed? At any rate, not good.

Light yellow. Crystallized citrus and a bit of petrol. Ripe for Clos Ste. Hune with pineapple fruit but minimal residual sugar and just amazing acidity for the vintage. Lovely texture that is mouthcoating but light at the same time. I was skeptical (as I am about all European 2003's) but I could not believe how good this was. Clearly ready now and probably bound to have a shorter life span than typical for this great cuvee.

Amazingly noble nose that grabs you from the outset. Something almost pleasantly metallic in the minerality that's offered on the nose--I was imagining old plate armor for some reason. Very enjoyable and didn't budge in terms of development during the hour we had it open. So very generously opened by Dan Posner for a sushi lunch. Given the growing conditions in 03, Dan figured it was more an excellent Riesling than an excellent Clos St Hune. I sensed a heft and structure to it that had a certain weightlessness and averted clunkiness. Thanks, Dan! You're the greatest.

I was a bit disappointed with this bottle. Never fully opened, although it began to show some life in hour two. While there is a good underlying structure this was not up to what I have had from this vineyard in other vintages. Perhaps it needs more time or needs to be decanted for a couple of hours before drinking.

Young and primary still. It needs some time to open up in the glass. Although, this is relatively shy. Not near as sharp and precise as the '02. Compared to the '97 this is more approachable.

Medium yellow color. Aromas of lime, stone, peach, and a hint of cherry. On the palate, this shows a pungent stony lime character with a hint of corn on the long finish. Cherry and floral elements emerge with some air and this really takes a day to open up and come together. Very drinkable now, but requires some advanced airing to get the components to integrate. Fine Riesling, merely ho-hum Hune. Drink or hold.

I just loved this. I literally could sit and sip on this all day. Excellent minerality, like gravel soaked in lime, apple and some stone fruits. Good acidity. Every sip built on the last, if this was a so-so vintage for this, I cannot wait to open the better vintages. Great wine.

Medium yellow color. Initial aromas of smoky ripe peach and a hint of tequila. On the palate, this shows a hit of turpentine and tequila due to it being too warm. After chilling, it shows lemon-lime, a dense, ripe stone fruit character and a strong rocky finish. This never really comes together on this evening and could have been affected by travel. Judgment reserved, but seemingly ready to drink and not as refined as Hune normally is. Drink or hold.

Reflecting the heat of the vintage, this is dense and rich, showing a slightly advanced degree of maturity, with complex flavors of dried apple, dried white flower and spice. Intense and showy on the palate, perhaps lacking some of the trademark Trimbach elegance.

Well, definitely not the best of this vineyard, however still impresses. Nose is least impressive. Clean and crisp on the palate, however a bit more acidity would be great. Green apple skin, lemon peel, gravel and wet stone. High minerality up front. Drinks fairly nicely. Will not last too long in bottle, however.

Very opulent nose of very ripe seed fruits (red apple, asian pear), wet stones, floral honey, a bit of petrol, and some smoke. Lush opulent mouthfeel, with good, but not great minerality. The biggest downside was that it was very much lacking in acidity. Pleasant to drink, but nowhere near its usual standards.
