Two weeks in France; 4/12/2024-4/24/2024: So tight and dense at first, with the oak use and chalky tannins dominating. Dark red fruit that was rustic and earthy with some smoky spice. Was slightly disappointed by this as it was too powerful and robust; more NSG than Vosne. Thankfully when we revisited this after dinner it was absolutely singing; the power had integrated on both nose and palate to deliver a superb drive and finesse that was finally both M-G and 2017.

Gorgeous Burgundy drank (for a fair price) at La Marine in Noirmoutier. The bouquet was dominated by intense red cherries, slight orange zest and a little blood and bacon, giving it an umami impression. Followed the wine over a day and it opened up even more after a few hours. The tannins are very refined and the overall mouthfeel is more Vosne than Nuits-Saint-Georges. This wine is delicious right now but will probably develop even more complexity with another 5-10 more years. Should easily hold for 2 decades.

Bu au Soufflot à Meursault, nez épicé et assez complexe, du fruit à revendre en bouche aussi, belle strucutre, texture assez fine malgré la puissance, belle longueur, très beau vin. 92-93
Gorgeous wine, red fruit and spices, complex nose, fine and elegant with structure and a texture based on finesse despite the relative power of the palate and great length.

Slow oxed for 7 hours before serving yet it is still too tight. So I decanted the wine for 30 mins before serving. Nose is still quite shut yet palate shows strong core darkish red berry fruit. It has exceptional power and weight, almost grand-cru like. It is more like a 2016 instead of 2017. The wine still requires at least 5 years to enter its early drinking window. Be patient. Good potential.

Beaune, France. From the restaurant's wine list. This was less expensive than Vosne-Romanee Villages from the same producer. It was also less developed, more crunchy-red-fruited. Better on Day 2, more stuffing is evident here. Leave it alone for another few years. A very solid premier cru.

The 2017 Mugneret Gibourg Les Chaignots is seriously impressive; tasted blind and guessed it was from a Grand Cru plot, this 17 Chaignots is not your typical NSG. Intense and powerful array of dark berries, smoked wood and lacy spices. Lots of substance, showing Grand Cru level of depth and fragrance. Generous Vosne-esque but with a twist of low-pitched fruits and a slightly rigid structure. Denis Mortet Clos Vougeot, 2016? (91/100)

Fortjener tid.

By the glass. Elegant red berries on the nose and an excessive concentration on the palate also an extraordinary acidity, good balance and length. Seal of this winery. You like it or you are just indifferent. Runaway prices nowadays.
Por copas. Bayas rojas elegantes en nariz y una excesiva concentración con una extraordinaria acidez, con buen equilibrio y longitud. Sello de la bodega. Te gusta o te es indiferente. Hoy en día precios desbocados.

As it always seems to be with this wine it shows a lovely mix of red and black fruit laced with flowers (violet?) and hints of spice. Silky texture and smooth, long finish that picks up a bit of mineral and continues with the Vosne-like spice. Young but approachable already although certainly will improve probably starting to show best on the younger side, say in 5-7 years.

2017 M-G are so beautiful, so precocious. This is a red fruited beauty, is so Vosne-ish, with red fruits, spices earth, and a tart, lively, thrilling sip and finish. I need to buy more 2017...

La Paulée Zachy's Auction - Thursday (Le Bernardin Privé): Perfumed red and black cherry with florals and intense spice. So round and juicy with suave, well-integrated structure. Smoky, musky finish. Drinking well now though should cellar for the medium term.

Beautiful ruby violet color with some legs. Nose plummy dark fruit. Palate silky, black cherries, tannins. Great length, and an absolute pleasure to drink now though has the balance and structure to portend effortless aging for at least the short-intermediate term. Wine of the night. 94 pts

F and B: dark black cherry aromas dominate, but earthy floral nuance too. Young dry meaty red fruits with real energy. Nice spiced finish. A bit tight, yet offers up plenty of pleasure. Some chewy structure points to long life. Ashame to have this so young as only gives a glimpse into a very promising future. Clearly impressive.

Barrel tasting at Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg (Vosne Romanee): 40% new oak. A touch closed on the nose -- black cherry and spice. The palate is so damn delicious. Great round fruit that is expansive across the palate. Plenty of balance and freshness. Strong Vosne character. Will drink well young with the stuffing to cellar well. 91-92+

Five winos excellent adventure , mostly in Burgundy; 6/7/2019-6/15/2019 (Beaune, France): Very floral and earthy nose displaying perfectly ripe black fruit, blackberry, black cherry, sap, sweet spices and earth. Already showing very harmonious palate, nicely layered pure black fruit, silky and polished, bright acidity, good limestone mineral, fine tannins and a medium to long sweet black fruit driven finish. Very pretty and pure for a NSG.

Mugneret-Gibourg Cellar Visit and Tasting (Vosne-Romanée): Tasting at the domaine. Racked/ assembled two weeks ago. 40% new oak. Same red cherry flavor profile as the Vosne, but bigger and slightly meatier with more tannic backbone. Longer finish, just slightly firm for right now. 90-91 point potential, 2023-.

Mugneret-Gibourg Cellar Visit and Tasting (Day 3, Visit 2) (Vosne-Romanée): Barrel tasting at the domaine of an assemblage of several new oak barrels. New oak will be 40% of the final assemblage, but neutral barrels were showing too much reduction. Rich black fruit with some red hints, big start but quickly the Vosne character seems to supersede NSG via spice and elegance. 90-91 point potential.
