Slight lack of definition on the nose, which was smoky with a cherry menthol note - fairly tempting, but not 'fine'. Again there's a touch of rusticity on the palate, the tannins not obtrusive but certainly not smooth and sandy, and powerful, mouthwatering cherry fruit. Probably better with food.
Edit: above was how the wine showed when I'd coravin'd a single glass. A week later, we drank the rest of the bottle, and it showed a fair bit better, with a sexier perfume, better balance and definition, and generally felt lighter on its feet. It's still a young wine though. Increased score from 89 to 90.

Old books, cherry, rhubarb, rose petal and undergrowth on the nose. It's medium bodied with a woven silk mouthfeel, and there's plenty of lift and well judged acidity providing plenty of freshness that counterbalances the delicious red fruit. There are tannins detectable on the finish. It is very much open for business and likely on its drinking plateau, and should remain there for quite a few years to come. It's drinking better than quite a few Barolos I have had lately. Bravo & open a bottle if it is in your cellar.

Nose makes me think dark and serious. Palate has surprising fruit and energy, but there's still some substantial tannin on the finish. This one could still use a few more years in the cellar.

Still not really mature, with furry mouth-puckering tannins, bright acidity and quite a bit of density, with sour red and a touch of black fruits.
Seems to lack a little focus, and I'm not sure whether that simply means it needs a few more years to round out, or whether it's a slightly clumsy wine. Leaving my next bottle for 3 or 4 years to see.

Somewhat firmer and less giving than a previous bottle a few months ago. The next day it was much more open and floral. I’ll hold for a while before trying again.

Felt as though it had closed up since I tried in 2019 and 2020: tannins a bit grainy, and overall less joyous - a bit brooding and adolescent, and really needed the burger I accompanied it with. Will wait at least another year before opening another.

Decanted for 40 minutes. Served on the cool side. Nose doesn't give up much initially. Slowly, with air, it reveals black cherry and rose wafting in the background. It feel serious right now. Compared to the open and giving '16 Albe from Sunday, this feels more like the playground bully. Has good palate presence, is very Nebbiolo, and no real harm in drinking now...but even better days are ahead, methinks.

Ekstra info. Bedst på 2 dagen. Zalto Burgunder glas. 18 måneder i store træfade. En større mængde frugt i denne årgang blev brugt på Barolo...deraf mindre produktion af Langhe 2016. Robert Parker 92+

Medium ruby colour. Red fruit, herbal and ethereal notes are joined by a black tea component on the finish, with high, fresh acidity, high, fine, dry tannin and good length. Good concentration. Benchmark Langhe Nebbiolo. Should drink even better from 2024.

Decanted only 30 minutes or so before serving, still a slight cellar chill on the bottle due to poor planning. We've been drinking the 2014s, which you just can't compare to other vintages, so had to be fair to this. Nose slightly muted, but vigorous swirling got it going. Quite dark fruit, masculine and somewhat rough at the edges. Very good persistence and shape in the mouth. All elements were in place here, as one would expect from Cavallotto even at this level. Easy to drink and enjoy, good nebbiolo character, medium weight and nice concentration. I expect a few years will bring it to a very nice place.

Popped and poured, enjoyed over two hours. Wonderfully familiar and expressive on the nose with dark cherry fruit enough to drown in, complex spiciness, tar, ash and some pine. Really rich and nostril-filling, you don’t have to work hard to experience the aromatics here. Sturdy and fairly dense on the palate with good weight and what I would call a confident presence. Pretty richly fruited yet dry and savory. Very firm with considerable tannins, this drinks fantastically well with a steak but on its own it gets more challenging quickly, which I take to mean that despite its designation it is built for the long haul. This is not an elegant ballerina but it does show a lot of class and is pretty damn serious a wine. Convincing stuff but no need to open the next bottle before age 15.

This really stood out at an en primeur tasting in October 2019 and my first bottle lives up to the impression I had last year. Lovely balance, really drinkable, silky tannins; it's actually quite rich and supple for a Langhe Nebbiolo but has a compensating bitterness that recalls Punt e Mes. Lots of fruit, lots of quality, absolutely ready to go. I also own the Bricco Boschis and am really looking forward to it now...

Bottles with Tom; 3/7/2019-3/28/2019: Cherry, violet, musk and some peppery spice. Red fruit profile with some firmish tannins and good earthy spice. Nice length and decent value.

Here we go atruffling... (aka Piedmont... and Veneto); 11/16/2018-11/30/2018 (Alba, Guarene, Modena, Barolo, La Morra, Lake Garda .....): Bottled in May. Again a baby. There's some very nice red fruits and a bit of baking spice going on. Certain refinement to it - I think of the Langhe Nebbiolo as being more of a table wine, but this is more interesting than that (although there is a clear step up to the barolos). Would be interesting to find some 2014 as the cru vineyards made it into that bottling. There's almost a sweetness to the fruit which is quite nice. Good drinking and great for price point.

2018 Cavallotto visit with Giuseppe Cavallotto (Tenuta Bricco Boschis, Castiglione Falletto): Bottled in May 2018 and again described by Giuseppe as “too young”. A serious black fruited nose of cherries, plums, liquorice and graphite. On palate, I was surprised by the quality here, thinking it Barolo-level. (Giuseppe said, “I agree. We could have labelled this wine as Barolo”.) A good volume of concentrated, plush, dark berried fruit packed around an austere, iron mineral core. Nice minerality and grip on the finish. Svelte tannins. Well balanced with precise acidity. An excellent buy.

It was nice but needed time to open. Definitely need food with it given the acidity and structure.
