Wow, what a wine! So incredibly rich and charming!
Fatty and oily substance, with burnt notes, cashew and peanuts, candies, butter cookies, and bakery shop.
Stellar terroir - 1er Cru Le Cailleret, which borders Chevalier-Montrachet, is rich, multidimensional, complex and super deep. Acidity to last 10 more years.
Stephen Tanzer says it was vinified by Jean-Marc Roulot, Alix’s de Montille husband. That’s the answer!
Ambrosia which covers the palate and caters to your senses, a true delight!

Jean Marc Roulot was excited to see this bottle & eager to taste as that was his last vintage with De Montille. Unfortunately as he predicted, 1999 vintage could be sometimes fragile and this is a premox bottle.

New Year's Day Long Italian Lunch (Eketahuna, New Zealand): Still very unevolved, tight slate, high toned meal - I the mouth, very tight and powerful, fennel seed, fruit driven - compared to the Jadot corton tasted just before. Similar length and power but less evolved and more fruit driven. Completely mineral in expression. Great wine - austere and stony.

Tasted blind. Straw-yellow color. Notes of toffee, pineapple. Oily texture. Clearly a bit oxidized but unlike my fellow drinkers I didn't find this too bad. Clearly a well made wine and I'm not sure the oxidation is a problem here. No reason to wait though.

This showed beautifully, and was incredibly fresh, with no sign of premox, just wonderful maturity, with perfectly integrated oak. If it wasn't for the oak's integrated and elegant sweetness and smokiness, this would be entirely about the minerals, which are expressed with great precision and a measure of sensuality. There is a real symphonic sense to this wine, with the stone wood and fruit complementing each other perfectly. Beautiful puligny, at its peak if the bottle is in good shape. For what it's worth this particular bottle was purchased at caves taillevent in Paris.

Taste from Elysian. Past its prime. This bottling at this point is unfortunately tired, flabby and just plain old dead. Faint nose of apple cider and light oxidation. Palate shows more of the deep golden apple cider quality with a slight minerality. As a whole the wine is unenjoyable and well past its prime.

Served from a magnum at a formal dinner with 10 guests. It didn't send any socks (or stockings) flying but it was much better than recent tastings from regular bottles. It had nice lemon custard pie quality to it with perhaps a bit of brulee. It didn't seem tired or old athough it's grip seemed bit weaker than a few years ago, but just comfortable with itself. As one friend said, "It tastes like a good aged white burgundy." It might coast for a while longer in large formats but I think it's time has pretty much come.

Fairly pale lemon/gold. Initially quite reticent, the nose really began to flower after an hour or so. Very intense citrus and minerality with just a touch of honey and herbs. Really quite lovely. The mouth entry is quite full and yet fresh and seems to expand in your mouth. The mid-palate has good intensity, showing ripe apples, citrus and mineral flavours, with good depth and superb balance. Very dry, and yet creamy. Finish is long and intense and quite firm today. A lovely wine that promises more in the future – say another 3 or 4 years in magnum, perhaps ready from a bottle.

This wine was in terrific shape. Color was yellow-gold. The nose was reticent but gave up some citrus, mineral qualities, and mellow fruit, if that makes any sense. On the palate the wine tasted and felt like a youngster just coming into its own. A bit of green apple, citrus, minerals, great acidity and a very strong finish. My guess is that another few years will bring this wine into its prime. Terrific.

Medium - full nose of yellow fruit, honey, mineral. On the palate, minerals, flint, light butterscotch. Showing well, with some secondary components coming on board now that it has had a few years in bottle. Very nice.

Medium lemon/gold. Medium intensity, very developed, honey and over-ripe apples. Good weight on palate and nice balancing acidity, but again very developed fruit character with honey and ripe apple notes on a good length finish. This is still drinkable, in fact it is quite pleasant, but this bottle has definitely aged prematurely.

Austere, mineral and lemon-curd driven nose. Light to medium body. Clean and well balanced with a crisp acidity. Plenty of room for improvement with age. ***+/5

Gorgeous stuff. Barely any colour at all, but incredible mountain-stream and tarragon. Nice body, balanced acids and a pure feeling on the palate. Slight creaminess. Lime and wet stone. Long finish. Very young, fresh and primary. Long upside to this wine.

Seemed to be diving towards complete premox. Burned caramel notes. Some fruit, but barely holding on. Not very enjoyable, half went down the sink.

So sad. I had this wine 2 years ago and it was as good as any Batard I have had. But now, the Ox-e-dation, damn. It is drinbkable, but no fun.

Caillerets Shoot-out: Puligny vs. Chassagne - Part 1 of L2O Dinner (L2O - Chicago IL): Tasted single blind. Very big wine both aromatically and on the palate. Ripe apple and candied lemon are quite prominent. Still a bit of oak that can be better integrated. Probably at its peak, perhaps just starting to pass that point right now.
