By the bottle at Barolo Grille in Denver. Decanted for a couple hours. Nose is savory with olive brine, white pepper, beef broth, red berries. Palate is fresh and herby with rosemary, hint of orange peel, red licorice, clay, green olives, white pepper, cherries. Very precise, especially as it opens up. Lighter body than i expected, nice finish with good balance between tannins and acidity.

A nice Crozes with olives and white pepper in the nose. It needs some time to open up. But once it does, it show all its qualities. Maybe a step below the 2015 but still a very nice northern Rhone.

Red with slightly blue rim, medium(+) intensity, prercipitate. Developed, low intensity nose with dark fruit. On the palate dry, medium(+) acidity, medium(+) well polished tannins, medium(+) body, 13,5%. Dark fruit, cherries, a complexity. Velvet texture. Very good length, a bit drying end. Taut with elegance aspirations. Day 2, surprisingly quick turn to dried fruit.

Ultra funky initially. I almost thought it was bretty and/or reduced. That eventually calms down though it took until the next day for it really go away. Leaving focused boysenberry and green olive. Rocky and warm. Excellent structure highlighted by a spine of powerful acid. The tannin are somewhat green, leaving some astringency. The fruit is a good deal more generous after a nights rest. Almost lush yet not quite all the way expressing yet. I think might be a touch dormant yet or just wanting a couple more years rest. A real nice surprise after recent struggles with the surrounding vintages. Real nice.

This was perhaps slightly disappointing considering the pedigree - the nose was beautiful and actually very blackcurrants which lead away from Syrah and towards more Cabernet Sauvignon - but that’s fine but the taste was very drying and I did miss a little more lush fruit to compare to the dark tannins - on the upside this was extremely elegant and light bodied which was wonderful - it will be interesting to see what a few more years will do😎

100% Syrah; 1-3 year old barrels, native yeasts. 100% stems. 30+ year old vines. Savory, olive nose with some spice and dark fruit. Elegant style with good acidity and some soft tannic structure. Classic Northern Rhone Syrah. Could still improve, open up and gain complexity.

Old world syrah, in a complimentary way, with slightly sour blackberry predominating. It’s got plenty of acid and tannins that stick around in the finish. Somewhat richer, smoother and less tart on day two. That bodes well for further cellaring.

To honor Alain Graillot’s life when we learn of his death, we decided to toast his talents with two wines: the Crozes-Hermitage and the St Joseph, both 2017 vintage. The CH: hearty, dark, brooding fruit with gamy notes that subsided over time, and an underlying sweetness that also emerged as the wine opened up. The SJ: initially strong barnyard aromas that wafted away after aeration, dark blackberry and savory notes with fine structure and more precision. Definite similarities yet I’d consider decanting either one, and hold onto the SJ for longer—it’s a finer wine.

Initially quite closed, this wine benefitted from an hour in the decanter, and indeed, even 22 hours after decanting it is still better yet. Tapenade nose, smooth texture with relaxed acidity, dark plum flavors, good length.

Alain Graillot Crozes-Hermitage Rouge 2017 Another superb perforamce today, my love. Last week, there was a bottle of this wine that not performed well and I was quite worried what happened. Today, I experiment once more and the result is astonishing!
Tasting/drinking using Riedel Superleggero Hermitage/Syrah glass.
Considering by the look the wine has deep purple color which represents its full-bodied of Syrah 😍. Beautiful legs and extracts on the side of the glass.
On the nose, the Alain Graillot Crozes-Hermitage offers the smell of mainly blueberry, riped cherries, pepper & herbaceous.
Full-bodied, dry, high tannin, medium plus alcohols. There is the taste of tobacco, black pepper, blue berries and some plum(?). Very delicious as always! Very happy that I decided to open a bottle today to overcome the confusion.

Deep purple in color, medium slow legs Faint hints of Dark fruit, mineral, brine, earth, tobacco, leather
Olives and capers are the dominating flavors. The overall palette is earthy and mineral and complex.
Medium to high tannins. Medium acidity. Alcohol is in balance.
My second Crozes Hermitage, much better than the first one I had. I loved this and will definitely be buying more because I bet this is going to be fantastic with just a few years of age.

A slight notch down from the 2016, yet there is certainly a lot about this wine to enjoy. The nose is full of dark blackcurrants, blackberries, red currents, dried herbs, black pepper, licorice and black tea. The palate was full-bodied, tart, and rustic with sweet black and red fruit that touches the palate followed by a more rustic and earthy mid-palate which is tight with finely grained tannins and quite a bright acidity. The finish is medium with dry herbs. 92

Far from a HQ Crises Hermitage for me. Some dull fruit characters compared to the earth-driven vibrancy I was hoping for. Good for those looking for a lighter bodied northern Rhône Syrah; just not the complexity I was expecting.

2017 Alain Graillot Crozes-Hermitage was stylish and complex. It was clear and deep ruby in colour without any sediments. Freshly uncorked, whole bunch lifted aromatics of strawberry bubblegum and violet blossoms came forth. With half an hour of aeration, intense aromatics of raspberries, redcurrants, tilted soil and farmyard developed. On the palate, it was dry, medium-full-bodied, with medium-high level of balanced of acidity and high level of structured tannin. The long finish showed intriguing interplay of red fruits, black pepper and earth. While it was approachable with 30-minute decant, the tannin and acidity structure promised a decade ahead. Thanks Alison for sharing this successful, memorable and characterful bottle of organic wine from Crozes-Hermitage towards the end of the evening, under the general theme of youthful Syrah.
The vines were grown on the flat alluvial plain in Crozes-Hermitage, and the average age was 30 years old. The grape was whole-bunch fermented for six days, followed by two weeks of maceration with regular pumping over. The wine was primarily aged in one-to-three-year-old used barrels bought from top estates in Burgundy.

A few Rhone Syrahs: Deep purple color. The nose exudes black fruit (cherries, blackberries) along with animal hide, grilled herbs, black olive brine and cracked pepper. Grippy tannins, tight but balanced with fresh acidity. The fruit is black and tart, and topped in leather, spicy grilled steak, black olive brine, and I get these underlying notes of iron and graphite. This is definitely one to age for at least four or five years, and it will evolve for a long time, but even at this young age, this is impressive. From 30-year-old vines, whole-cluster fermented in concrete and aged in old oak barrels.

very deeply colored, purple rim. nose is quite aromatic serving up a black fruited wine with a fair amount of old world funk, no new oak ... on the palate high acids, plenty of flesh and midpalate weight, finishes with a moderate amount of moderately firm grape tannins, moderate alcohol. very balanced wine with shortish length, very good intensity, average complexity. i haven't had this wine in a few vintages and while it is true to style as i remember, it was disappointing both in length and complexity. for me a solidly "good" old world syrah that you should drink now or next 1-3 years... feel like i'm raining on peoples' parade a bit but remember this being more impactful and serious.

Dinner at Auburn LA (Auburn Restaurant, Los Angeles): Lovely, but far too young. Violet in color, with intense nose of hi-toned red fruit...so bright. On the palate, excellent acidity, more red fruit and sweet black raspberry. Maybe the slightest hint of feral, but really fruit-forward. I'm still not drinking my 12s and 13s since they are still unwinding... This was a sort of strange pairing with duck...but it mostly worked.

Black fruit, a touch of earth, lots of Syrah earthiness actually. Some barnyard. The master of the old school I am being told. Tight and hard edged. Bill notes "its good, is it not?" And there it is. Maybe a bit of Brett on the back of the palate.

Dyp og tett rød med lilla kant. Flott nese. Animalsk med mørk frukt i retning bjørnebær og blåbær av svært god kvalitet. Mørk og sursøt frukt i munn. Tobakk og røykaromaer. Faste men elegante tanniner. God konsentrasjon, og vinen sitter lenge for nivået. Veldig godt. Kan drikkes nå, men helst til mat.

This is an excellent rendition of the wine, though it is definitely not at the same level as the incredible 2016 and the excellent 2015. Another fairly solar vintage, this shares quite a lot of similarity with the 2015 in its generous amounts of black fruit. The nose is classic syrah, framed by a moderate hint of black pepper and maybe just a very mild tinge of brine. The palate doesn't quite have the same tannic heft that the 2015 did; I think this will likely be a slightly shorter-lived version of that wine. Nonetheless, there's still plenty to enjoy here, even while the black fruit tends to the riper side.

Black fruit, a touch of earth, lots of Syrah earthiness actually. Some barnyard. The master of the old school I am being told. Tight and hard edged. Bill notes "its good, is it not?" And there it is. Maybe a bit of Brett on the back of the palate.

Showed very well tonight lots of dark berries on the nose with earthy mineral and dried herbs, palate is a touch tight but juicy and decent acidity and length

I liked this and for me it felt already approachable after 1 hour decant. Meat, pepper, dark fruits and brine. Evident terroir. Good. Will buy more. good qpr for me.

Young Graillot and Gonon (Noe Valley Wine Merchants, San Francisco): Medium ruby. Some funk. Medium weight black fruit with a strong note of stems and green. Rough around the edges with a good tannic bite.
