I'm an amateur when it comes to Henri Gouges wines, but I found this highly enjoyable! Super classic Bourgogne nose: flower petals, autumn leaves, potting soil, rosehips, sweet tobacco, raspberry and ripe cherries. On the palate this is juicy, fleshy, very well balanced and long. For a NSG i found this surprisingly fruit forward also less austere and structured than what I'm used to. Very good! Should have bought more...

First of six bottles; I’ve been sitting on these for 2-1/2 years waiting to crack one open. Decanted prior to dinner of baked pesto salmon with spinach ravioli. Initially, very disjointed with creamy oak causing lots of distraction and masking the purity of the fruit. It took nearly two hours for this to start to come together. Eventually, this started to shine and show some balance. In retrospect, I knew it was still early on this, but a six years, it was time to delve into it. I plan on sitting on the remaining bottles for another 12-18 months before making another run. A big, muscular Red Burgundy withs lots of potential, but could use additional time in the cellar. Drink now with a long decant and through 2040+.

Had bought a case and was curious how this would show. Powerful, structured but sill very enjoyable, this was a prime example of the NSG terroir while clearly showing the transition of the Domaine towards a much more elegant and less stern approach of winemaking. Needless to say, this will need another ~5 years to show its full potential but it certainly was a pleasure to drink now.

The Verticals Tasting at 2023 La Paulée (Eventi Hotel, New York): Deeper red. Ripe cherry aroma. Medium weight. Outstanding depth of black cherry fruit, lively acidity, less soil than the 2016, moderately drying tannin. The soil coats the tongue. Best of the 3 wines, should be long lived.

Honestly not sure what the negative ratings are about. Pop and pour and she was ready to go. Maybe because it’s a 375ml? Maybe a bit of surprise smoke on the nose but otherwise a very classic 1er with a core acidity that really made it sing. Lots of fruit but not overpowering — plenty of spice to add mystery to this gem. Very pleasantly surprised for a way overpriced restaurant bottle!

Really outstanding wine at this early stage of development and has a lot of upside with more time in the cellar. Shows serious depth and amazing balance. High energy/intensity, wonderful acidic balance, kept evolving with air. Superb! 2017 vintage produced some amazing wines in Burgundy.

Took a few hours to develop aromatics. Some barnyard funk, game, and black cherry notes. Tannic structure starts to poke through with air. Mix of back cherry with red fruit highlights—quite plush with a bit of sappiness. Quite nice but seems like it may be shutting down a bit.

Classy Pinot Noir from Cote de Nuits region. Medium ruby red color in the in the glass. Lovely aromas of red fruits and a hint of smoke when decanting. On the palate, flavor notes of dark cherries and currants with hint of cocoa. Medium bodied mouthfeel with complex layering of flavors. Smooth finish with tannins well behaved.

Taut and rather lean but elegant. Has some cranberry mixed with the bright cherry fruit. Fine delineation in the palate, with mild but firm tannic structure with some sappy fruit on the finish. Really opened up with a couple hours air with expressive floral aromatics and fruit character changing to more black cherry. Needs some time but enjoyed this bottle.

2017 reds with Jasper Morris MW (67 Pall Mall TV): JM believes that NSG should get more love than it does. This wine is from just south of the town itself. Clos des Porrets is a monopoly of the Gouges family. Once again, entirely destemmed.
Quite dark in colour, some weight to the nose, with a little bit of spice and creamy oak behind the red and blue fruit. The palate is similarly concentrated, and with similar notes - plummy (almost jammy), good acidity, chewy with some tannins (although they are largely hidden behind the fruit). Strawberry jam and clotted cream on the finish! Will probably shine in 20 years' time, but surprisingly drinkable now.

Drinking really well early on, but benefits from an hour or two of air. On PnP, there's a bit of cedary/oak that obscures the nose and palate, but once this opens up, there's a beautifully complex nose showing darker red fruits, orange zest, exotic spices, and a tough of leafy herbalness. The tannins are fine but slightly drying, and there's lovely sappy texture. Great depth to the fruit. Who knows if this will shut down at some point, but it's very open and enjoyable at the moment, with tremendous upside.

A bit shy at first, but starts to open after a few hours of air. Slightly sweet dark red fruits and some oak spice. A bit tannic, but on the soft and velvety side. Oak still present on the palate, but plenty of fruit at the core. Needs 3-4 hours in a decanter if drinking now, but probably better in 5-7 years with another decade beyond that.

From 375ml. This is my second bottle, the first one I tasted about a year ago. This wine is starting to shut down. Slightly less expressive than the previous bottle. Tannins are more pronounced. Nice acidity. Raspberry, tart cherry, fruit punch on the palate. Excellent freshness. 91 today, but with age it'll be 92+. Will keep the remaining bottles for at least another 1-2 years before trying again.

On the nose, there were some wild strawberries, bright cherries, jam, clove, sweet spice, candied yoghurt. On the palate, there was candied blackberry yoghurt, black cherries, sweet baking spice, clove, wild strawberries, cinnamon, allspice, fruitcake, zesty fruit, some complexity, jam, sweetness, sweet spice, licorice, elegant. Probably not a deep hitter - it was easy drinking from the start and it got a bit acidic as the night went on. A pretty approachable NSG that can be drunk now. 92/100

Tasting at Domaine Henri Gouges (Nuits Saint George): Again interesting and confirming to taste the 2017 and 2018 side by side. More red fruited here with more distinct earth subtlety coming through. The acidity and tannin is more prominent and the body is leaner than the 2018, though not a lean wine in its own right. Similar to the NSG Village, the 2018 is more fun and easy to enjoy while the 2017 would work better at the dinner table.

Burgundy, Day 2 (Beaune, France): Again, this is a little bit of a sterner wine, but given the lighter vintage, that isn't as prominent as on the 2018. The fruit almost feels a little tart because of how red and juicy it is (but it isn't). There's a structural frame that's built prominently around the acidity rather than the tannin here. Surprisingly approachable.

Lovely nose with wild berries, bright fruit, minerals and violets. Like many modern red burg, it is all about the exuberance of pure fruit. But the wine was compact and precise. The focus at this stage is the interplay between the fruit and acidity, which is very enjoyable. If you think Gouges wine is rustic and dark, it is not anymore (since 2016/2017).

Confrerie Lou Hei dinner with Henri Gouges wines (Jade Palace Seafood Restaurant): Appearance is clear, pale intensity, ruby colour. Legs. Nose is clean, medium intensity, with aromas of sweet red cherries, sweet spices, oak toast, fragrant earth. Developing. On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium alcohol (13%), medium+ tannins, medium+ body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of sweet red cherries, raspberries, sweet spices, minerals, underlying earth. Long finish. Very good quality. Lots of lurking potential. Sophisticated feels. The best is yet to be for this. Hold for 5 years at least. I'm probably underrating this even.

2018 Visit to Domaine Henri Gouges with Grégory Gouges (Nuits St. Georges): A Gouges Monopole. An interesting nose: spices, red and black currants and minerals. A smooth, clean entry to the palate, followed by substantial matière and power. Precise and quite refined. Suave, spherical tannins. As Grégory said, "a good representative of this side of Nuits St. Georges ... a little strict and austere but with more structure". I agreed. Very good.

PoB - Burgundy 2017 En Primeur (Hong Kong): Walkabout tasting, only brief impressions. The current generation of Henri Gouges has changed the wine making style. While staying true to the classicism, the tannins are now much more sophisticated. Great earthy aromatics in this wine, good QPR, at this stage on par with the Les St.Georges.
Tasted next to 2017 N-S-G Vaucrains. A hint of reduction on the nose. Fresh, grippy, a bit more depth and length in comparison, but again quite mineral and precise. Good fruit and length. 91-92+

Tasted next to 2017 N-S-G Vaucrains. A hint of reduction on the nose. Fresh, grippy, a bit more depth and length in comparison, but again quite mineral and precise. Good fruit and length. 91-92+
