France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru
Vertical. Slightly tropical, very rich. nicely tasty. This is slowly evolving in the direction of many other good 2013s - its odd bitter and sweet edges finally harmonizing. While not very complex or structured, I expect this will continue to evolve and improve over the next decade.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
Vertical. Like the best of the 2013s, this has harmonized nicely with good richness and a sneaky bright finish with very good length. Easily the best of the flight.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
Vertical. Long and dense, even if less perfectly harmonious now. More to come. Another atypical 2013, but that's what makes the vintage so interesting.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
Vertical. Another 2013 that is taking its sweet time synthesizing its underripe fruit with its botrytis, but I expect this wine will work through that same combination working its magic across the vintage. Just not yet here.
Vertical. Firm but the wine's elegance easily shows. Red and black cherry with good+ density. This will be the best of the vertical, but not yet today, 90-91 point potential.
Vertical. Entirely charming, accessible and prototypically Volnay in its floral, spice, and red-fruited profile. Open for business and so much fun today.
Vertical. More black than red cherry, good depth and power. Firm middle for now, very good length. This might become the best of this vertical flight, but is the least approachable right now. The rare 2010 that is less accessible vs its 2009 counterpart.
Vertical. Fleshy and rich but with enough acidity and silky tannin to maintain very good balance. Not exactly textbook Volnay that highlights delicacy and elegance, but certainly dense and fun already now.
Vertical. An excellent Pommard that needs lots of time. Bold black fruit are slightly brooding now, very firm in the middle. I have three magnums in the cellar, and will give them another decade of rest.
Vertical. Stark contrast to 2018, this is wonderfully tasty right now even if not even close in terms of density or power. Red and black fruits, faintly spiced, all well balanced.
Vertical. Both black and red cherry here, very Pommard textures in terms of firm tannins and big mouth feel, but I found the structure today a bit dominant. Lots here so I remain optimistic, but I found this the most difficult of the trio to assess and forecast.
Vertical. Magnum. Big and bold, but backward. This has the fruit and structure to progress in sync, and the power/ density to be successful in a decade+.
Vertical. Magnum. Elegant and wonderful balanced today with complexity in the background. Lots of red fruits here, so bright and charming now through the next 15+ years.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru
Walkaround vertical tasting. Magnum. Very easy, very fun now, especially for a Corton. Floral and nicely spiced with soft red and black cherry start-to-finish.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru
Walkaround vertical tasting. Magnum. Surprisingly accessible for the vintage, this has so much energy with elegant flavors. Modern styled, but with a Crton backbone. Very good now with lots of upside.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru
Walkaround vertical tasting. Magnum. Dense black and red cherry, showing both fresh and mature fruit. Floral, elegant, and faintly earthy. Good power and density. Still some limited upside, but I'd err on opening 750s in the next decade while this fresh and bright.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
Walkaround vertical tasting. The biggest and and interesting of this charming vertical. Lots of black and red cherry, subtly spiced with very density. Very good now, better 2025-.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
Walkaround vertical tasting. Shocked at how approachable this was already, given vintage and terroir. Soft and easy fruit and a bit of braised meat. Very good now.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru
Walkaround vertical tasting. Black and red cherry, still backward with a firm middle. Not yet harmonious, but large scaled enough to handle that awkwardness some day (?) in the future.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru
Walkaround vertical tasting. Still firm, this never reached quite perfect balance. An OK vintage for this wine that is typically wonderful from its youth through the next 30 years.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru
Walkaround tasting. Firm but with the substance to withstand that structure. Clear Grand Cru density with good length, too. 92-93 point potential, 2028 forward.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Grands-Echezeaux Grand Cru
Walkaround tasting. Ripe and bright red fruits throughout with baking spice. Rich and fun already with wonderful balance. Easily the best of the trio to enjoy right now.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru
Walkaround vertical tasting. Rich and dense red cherry and berry with an intense concentration, both from vintage character and old vines. So bright, great length. This needs more time but is perfectly Vosne styled.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru
Walkaround vertical tasting. Bigger, ripe, and bolder than the 2016 but with less energy or textural brilliance. Slightly firm still and also very cellarworthy.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru
Walkaround vertical tasting. Huge volume and density with wonderfully bright fruit. So much tannin, but nothing coarse or dominating, this is a great wine under slow development, 94-95 point potential, from 2030 or 2035 forward.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru
Walkaround vertical tasting. Certainly lighter than the 2018 but also not particularly accessible right now. Faintly perfumed. Elegant styling here with everything coming through as still powerful. 92+ point potential, from 2027 forward.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru
Walkaround vertical tasting. This really showcased what the vintage gave Burgundy, focusing less on ripeness or power, and more on balance and finesse. Elegant and ethereal with great length. This is getting close to its peak drinking window, which I think might be from 2030. Note, a 2nd bottle tasted later was less vibrant.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de Tart Grand Cru
Walkaround vertical tasting. Alluring red fruit aromas with perfume. Palate didn't quite follow through, lots here, but not quite harmonious, which is unusual for the vintage. I was slightly perplexed and was hoping to revisit, but time did not permit. Lots here, patience required is my general assessment.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de Tart Grand Cru
Walkaround vertical tasting. Lots here, extremely lush, while firmly backward, this is a very powerful wine that shows the 2016 vintage well. Again, I struggled with an overall assessment, but like where there is heading a lot.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de Tart Grand Cru
Walkaround vertical tasting. Faintly reductive. Complex array of red and black cherries and berries, but still firm structure making this barely forthcoming. Spice and whole cluster character is somewhere between very charming and too pronounced. Overall, also tough to fully assess right now but there is so much great stuff here, I am excited about where this will emerge 2030 forward.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
Walkaround vertical tasting. Lush black fruits with meaty notes, lots of fun already. Very good length. This has softened nicely since I tasted at the domaine in 2021.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
Walkaround vertical tasting. More lush vs 2020, less textural brightness, at least the same depth, greater volume. Which is better? I'd say this 2019 by a fraction, but my answer may well be different next time I taste both wonderful wines.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru
Walkaround vertical tasting. Absolutely approachable red-fruited charmer with great density, while wonderfully balanced and easy to enjoy now. But yet... somehow... great intensity and concentration emerges. Great now with plenty of upside. A great wine in its early drinking stages.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru
Walkaround vertical tasting. Extremely rich with immense power, yet near balance. Structure is elegant and remains just off center in the near background. Not as great right now as the 2017, but better for the cellar. Exceptional potential 94-95 points as it evolves.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru
Walkaround vertical tasting. Intense ripeness is still front-and-center, nicely supported by meaty spice. Little complexity has emerged to date. A great wine that might not be at its best phase right now, but its 94-95 point potential remains clear, I would just push out its peak drinking window to later than I previously thought, so now, 2029 forward.

Walkaround vertical tasting. Certainly lighter than the 2018 but also not particularly accessible right now. Faintly perfumed. Elegant styling here with everything coming through as still powerful. 92+ point potential, from 2027 forward.

2010 Domaine Ponsot Clos de la Roche Vieilles Vignes 94 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru
Walkaround vertical tasting. This really showcased what the vintage gave Burgundy, focusing less on ripeness or power, and more on balance and finesse. Elegant and ethereal with great length. This is getting close to its peak drinking window, which I think might be from 2030. Note, a 2nd bottle tasted later was less vibrant.

2017 Domaine du Clos de Tart Clos de Tart
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de Tart Grand Cru
Walkaround vertical tasting. Alluring red fruit aromas with perfume. Palate didn't quite follow through, lots here, but not quite harmonious, which is unusual for the vintage. I was slightly perplexed and was hoping to revisit, but time did not permit. Lots here, patience required is my general assessment.

2016 Domaine du Clos de Tart Clos de Tart
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de Tart Grand Cru
Walkaround vertical tasting. Lots here, extremely lush, while firmly backward, this is a very powerful wine that shows the 2016 vintage well. Again, I struggled with an overall assessment, but like where there is heading a lot.

2015 Domaine du Clos de Tart Clos de Tart
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de Tart Grand Cru
Walkaround vertical tasting. Faintly reductive. Complex array of red and black cherries and berries, but still firm structure making this barely forthcoming. Spice and whole cluster character is somewhere between very charming and too pronounced. Overall, also tough to fully assess right now but there is so much great stuff here, I am excited about where this will emerge 2030 forward.

2020 Domaine Fourrier Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Cherbaudes Vieille Vigne 91 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
Walkaround vertical tasting. Lush black fruits with meaty notes, lots of fun already. Very good length. This has softened nicely since I tasted at the domaine in 2021.

2019 Domaine Fourrier Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Cherbaudes Vieille Vigne 91 Points

2017 Joseph Drouhin Griotte-Chambertin 93 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru
Walkaround vertical tasting. Absolutely approachable red-fruited charmer with great density, while wonderfully balanced and easy to enjoy now. But yet... somehow... great intensity and concentration emerges. Great now with plenty of upside. A great wine in its early drinking stages.

2015 Joseph Drouhin Griotte-Chambertin 94 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru
Walkaround vertical tasting. Extremely rich with immense power, yet near balance. Structure is elegant and remains just off center in the near background. Not as great right now as the 2017, but better for the cellar. Exceptional potential 94-95 points as it evolves.

2009 Joseph Drouhin Griotte-Chambertin
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru
Walkaround vertical tasting. Intense ripeness is still front-and-center, nicely supported by meaty spice. Little complexity has emerged to date. A great wine that might not be at its best phase right now, but its 94-95 point potential remains clear, I would just push out its peak drinking window to later than I previously thought, so now, 2029 forward.
