  • Two hour double decant. Deep magenta color. Strawberry, raspberry, peppermint patty, Earl Grey tea, eucalyptus, and subtle coffee grounds. Smooth, dry, slightly herbal palate. Full tannins on the longish finish.

Brought by a friend to our monthly supper club. Solid showing for a not so great vintage.

  • I had 2 "basics" ChdP from this great winery.
    2001 - 95 points
    2017 - 96 points
This is a Special Reserve Cuvée. It's named in honor of the founder of the estate, Auguste Favier.
Because of that I'm sure it has to be better then their regular ChdP

First sniff and first sip and this is the masterpiece. I think it's the most unique wine ( in a very positive sense) I have ever had the pleasure of drinking
Especially the taste. Nothing unusual, but the balance of all components is incredible.
But let's start from the beginning.
Smell? On the sweet side. Plum, milk chocolate, blackberry, but also herbs, earth, forest, vanilla, licorice and who knows what else is here. Anyway - pure pleasure.
Taste - as I wrote: herbs and one more time herbs, but...
Perfectly balanced with sweet black fruits, chocolate, raspberry and mandarin ( am I crazy or what?) and lovely spice
Acidity is vivid and perfectly blended with sweet flavors
    Tannins are ripe and grainy.
Finish lasts forever with all what I mentioned.
2017 got 94 points according to the WA Vintage Guide. Outstanding. Still tannic, youthful or slow to mature.

2017 got 94 points according to the WA Vintage Guide. Outstanding. Still tannic, youthful or slow to mature. One more thing about the finish.
I take a small slice of salami and I still have this wine sensation in my mouth.
    Unbelievable.
I just finished my third glass.
Additional smell - barbecue and smoke.
Flavors - barbecue meat, black pepper.
And this incredible long finish drives me crazy straight to ... paradise
    🙂

  • I had a 2001 vintage last December - 94 points.
Let's see if this young brother is also so good.

St.Perfert was established in 1930 and it was one of the first wineries from CdR to export to the USA! It got pretty quick to be recognized as a HQ wine maker in ChdP.
Ok let's go to this particular wine. It's simply magnificent!
The taste is full of ripe fruits, ripe tannins, sweet spices. Red cherry, black cherry, blackberry, but also raspberry ( wow?), mandarin ( so cool). But wait...
    ... there's more.
Definitely licorice and mint. Milk chocolate ( no doubt about it) and an interesting finish with herbs, plum and black pepper, black olives.
Unfortunately the finish is way too short.( that's why 95 pts.)
Smell is fragrant ,delicate ( in positive meaning). Raspberry, orange, flowers, graphite, ripe red and black cherry, milk chocolate.
I am glad that I have one more bottle, see you next year 🙂

  • Cassis, black plum, wet metal, vanilla oak, and inky dark chocolate cherry come through on the nose after 90 minutes in the glass. Before then, too much wet metal and alcohol in the nose to judge. This is a big penetrating CdP, but presents like a wine that’s been worked and manipulated to create that big body, lots of power, minimal grace. Fairly hot and spicy, still tannic, blind I wound have guessed it was a hot vintage Rhône Ranger crafted by a Parker score chaser , big and racy, really concentrated, still young, and still hard to predict whether this improves. I’m guessing it won’t.; it is what it is, probably for 10 years. Not my style. Hard to pair in it’s awkward youth, medicinal with edgy hot iodine, black licorice and distracting acidity, but it surprisingly worked with a variety meat loaf, more than with grilled prime rib eye, which showed it up! Works well, also, with black olives.

  • Decanted about an hour. Medium ruby, long legs, on 👃 graphite, gun powder, dry leaves, ripe cherries, licorice, cigar box. Very milky, very dry, highly acidic, strong frontal tannins with sweet cherry & vanilla finish; a bit one dimensional taste. Good to drink now. I liked 👃 over 👅 .

  • Very dark. Clean, fruit and floral. Excellent concentration without excess weight or alcohol.

  • Drank over the course of two nights. Hot and spicy on the first and overly pruned/musty on the second. I get that’s it’s under $40 (good price) but these are a long ways ofF the fabulous Charles Giraurd and August Favier bottling. My recommendation is to wait or decant for 4-5 hours. Likely more potential here than my score entails but that was my experience.

  • Simply gorgeous- very primary, but certainly not closed, nor too young to enjoy.

Perfurmed, pure, perfectly ripe blueberry essence on the nose, with accents of darker fruit like dates. The liqueur-like, "glazed" quality of the fruit almost reminded me of a Turtle Rock Syrah from Paso (?!?)- this Châteauneuf is much less powerful of course, but has a similar tone. I know there's not a lot of oak here, but has a gentle sort of milky oak accent. After a while the nose showed both wild herbs and the smallest incense note. It's amazing how ripe it shows at only 13.5%, low for the region and leaning toward my style of wine.

Palate is mostly showing that blue fruit too, ripe without being cloying at all, plenty of tannin but showing a nice velvety texture (not overbearing) and a nice medium+ acidity that gave enough energy to balance all that ripeness. The experience is mostly fruit-driven throughout, but feels truly well-balanced and shows subtle complexity lurking.

This could age really well in the short term, with more than enough fruit to last whille the tannin and acidity carry it forward. Still feels designed for earlier drinking though- even at only 3 years old, it's very open, and the tannins/acidity are there in the background, rather than laying a powerful foundation. By far the best sub-$50 CdP I've had- most feel elegant but also a lot less interesting.

  • 第一天 是个 got mess,第二三天,典型的气味出来了,还是有点热。不值这个价

  • Blue fruits, orange blossom honey, molasses, smokehouse, and smoldering coals on the bouquet and palate. The whole package, lively, generous, and long. Delicious now and likely to improve. 92-93.

  • Medium body wine, ruby colour, blueberries, raspberries, strawberries and violets.
Very balanced, mineral and fresh considering the region.
Not a masculine or opulent Chateauneuf, pretty polished, very well juice for less than a 50 bucks!

  • Black raspberries, cherries, plums, flowers and spice hits your nose. On the palate, the wine is vibrant, juicy and open, with softness, fruit and tannins along with olives and herbs in the finish. The wine blend 85% Grenache, 5% Mourvedre, 5% Syrah and 5% Cinsault.

  • The '17 Saint Préfert Châteauneuf-du-Pape has evolved since my last taste a few months ago. Here I found a bright, spicy blend of crushed raspberry and strawberries, with sweet herbal lift, smoke, violette pastille, and fresh red florals. On the palate, silky textures were energized by brisk acids, giving way to ripe red fruits, exotic spice, and liquid sweet florals, which coated the senses, leaving minerals and youthful tannin behind. The finish was long, displaying palate staining red fruits, which dried slightly due to the wine hidden structure, as inner florals and spice lingered long.

This is beautiful juice, and at only 13.5% abv--for CdP, amazing!

  • Tight and a wee bit lean, spicy, young, dry at the end - again. Will improve. 89+

  • The nose was deep and rich, yet still quite lively, showing notes of plum, crushed strawberry, sweet lavender, crushed violet candies, savory sage and spice. On the palate, I found silky, enveloping textures, unfolding to reveal ripe strawberry, raspberry, sweet spices and saturating minerality, as hints of fine tannin set upon the senses. The finish was medium in length, displaying dried strawberries with exotic spices and lingering minerality.(92-93 points)
