A great and open 2005. Nose seductive and singing, body still a little on the tight side but I don’t mind. Makes the wine more focused. Nice to see some 2005s tip toeing into their drinking windows.

This was delightful, with the delicious balance that others note. It is still very fresh for a 2005 vintage - lots of fruit in the form of berries and black cherries. It is not as powerful as I think I was expecting; it struck me as a little more subtle and delicate wine. There is just not a wrong note. That might be the one slight disappointment I found: that it was not hitting me with something unusual. However, there is about a third of the bottle left so maybe that is yet to come. Really great Burgundies keep evolving until the very end, and this one did evolve over time.
The valuation made it scary to open this bottle, but once opened, it was singing and so enjoyable with each sip. It is a super well-made wine. It could certainly age longer but is quite good now.

Chez G, decanted an hour, perfect cork and level - dark glossy quite dense (for Burg) ruby, little rim development; attractive, nuanced nose, black cherry, judiciously spiced, hints of sous bois, graphite and strawberry, floral elements; fullish, much less developed palate, long, persistent and concentrated, silk and polish, should develop greater nuance with time, drinkable with pleasure but adolescent, upside. VF (18.5).

Completely different experience than the last bottle from about 2 years ago. This was open and had a gorgeous and complex nose of wild strawberries, pure fruit, and cherries. Good acidity with excellent balance and less structure than expected along with flavors of forest floor and more berries. Long finish. Amazing wine that was drinking perfectly. Not sure what has happened in 2 years since the last taste or if just bottle variation…

Chambolle Southside 1er (Zoom / Chicago): An exceptional nose that is full, intense and layered with ripe strawberry, smoke, florals and spice. Powerful 2005 fruit with so much elegance and restraint. Great now with upside.

Chambolle Musigny "Southside" 1er Cru Tasting (Chicagoland IL): Alongside Groffier Hauts-Doix 05/09/10 vertical, bridging to an Amoureuses flight. Lots of red cherry and berry throughout with occasional hints of black cherry. Spice and meaty notes in the near background. Great density, balance, and length with enticing minerally textures. Even slightly better than another bottle from the same case from 6 months ago. This was probably as enjoyable tonight as the great 2010 Lucien Le Moine Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses, but the LLM has further upside.

This had a couple hours of air and it was (surprisingly for an 05) singing. Beaming nose of red fruit, florals and iron that is classic Chambolle (more so than the 07 Vogüé). Palate is concentrated yet weightless with refined structure and pure, sweet red fruits — delicious.

Fun with Pucelles and Amoureuses (Hughes House - Chicago IL): Opened well in advance with two hours in a decanter. Lots of red cherry and berry with some black cherry as well. Fruit is well supported by perfumed and spice notes and broad, bright textures. This is a big wine, yet already balanced and complex, unfolding over the hour+ in glass. Great now with upside.

Still young but everything I could have hoped for, stunning red cherry fruit, lovely sweet tannins and all round wow wine. Only have 2, it’s all I was allowed to buy en primeur but shared with my father couldn’t have been better. I dread to think what it costs now but if you get an opportunity dive in. It’s got years ahead of it.

{At Amoureuses tasting my house, just before COVID} Opulence! Really pretty wine. Does not have the residual sugar the ’02 has. Most developed in the flight. Fresh candied strawberries in the nose. Very complete. No rush to drink, will hold for years and years.
Flight: 05 Gambal (92); 05 Jadot (95); 05 Groffier (95); 05 Mugnier (96; my wine of the night)

This needed a ton of air. The nose was ungiving at first, but then started to show notes of wild strawberries, cedar, and red berries. Noted red fruit on the palate with some mushrooms and new leather. Medium finish. I hope this is in a dumb phase and will come around with time. Not giving much right now. 92+

Slowly bt breathed for 2 hrs. Color is dark ruby, floral, matured red fruits espeically hawthorn and hint of spicy aroma, a remarkable nose with structure and variety. On palate, however, tannin is almost bitter though not dusty. More acidic than nose suggested, some dark fruits emerged from mid palate mingled with spice. Finish is long. Nose is better than taste, I adore the 2007 Mugnier Amoureuses more.

Fourteenth Annual White Truffle Dinner (Chez Weber - Chicago IL): Opened several hours in advance with some time in a decanter. Broad cross-section of red fruit with lots of complexity and background, subtle spice notes. Rich and incredibly expressive already, with so much mineral and iron textures. Tannins are plenty big, but so well integrated. This was the most enjoyable wine in the flight tonight, even if I think the Drouhin 2005 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses has slightly greater potential.

Powerful very ripe nose displaying raspberry concentrate, strawberry, mocha, caramel and earth. Excellent concentration, dense and ripe red fruit, medium acidity, good earthy mineral, a hint of tannins and a medium to long dense red fruit driven finish. It feels very heavy and ripe at the moment. With air, it shows better balance. Recommend to decant, not a bad idea to cellar for another five years minimum.

Birthday Celebration (Chicago, IL): Opened at 12, tasted around 2:30 and again at 4:30. Lots of red cherry and berry start-to-finish with savory spice, lots of nuance. Powerful structure, well integrated. Wonderful now, clearly with upside.

Chambolle-Musigny les Amoureuses Dinner, Mostly Groffier (Boka - Chicago IL): Decanted for several hours. A real powerhouse that might not have showed lots of Amoureuses character today, but that didn't really bother me given its youth. Mostly red fruit aromas, followed by red and black cherry on palate. Huge fruit, huge acidity, huge tannins all the way through. This is coming together already now, and I am very excited for where this will be in another decade.

Lieu-dit-Cru - Amoureuses Day dinner (Boka): Full deep red color. Medium full rich spicy red fruit aroma. Lovely rich ripe red and black fruits on the palate. Youthful and vibrant with complexity among components. This should come together and be spactacular with time (and it's a pleasure to drink now!). 94-95pts. This would have by my second place WOTN.

Birthday Dinner Featuring Bonneau du Martray and the Very Best of Chambolle-Musigny (The Bristol - Chicago IL): In Amoureuses flight, including Groffier 95/05/10. Opened and double decanted several hours before serving. Great concentration and weight with lots of black cherry and berry, savory spice and roasted meat, finishing with lots of power. Group could not reach consensus on preference between this and the 2010.
