  • Served blind, and while I managed to place in Northern France, I would never have guessed it; it is a dense, stony, quite closed, very concentrated and manly wine, as of now not showing the sexy charm of the terroir. Much too young, of course (not my bottle), and I would expect it to show much better in say ten years or so. Will live much longer than that.

  • Obviously young but tannins surprisingly supple. Dark fruit is a bit monolithic at this stage, this should ultimately be an excellent wine in about 20 years.

  • Second tasting of a differed bottle.

Medium garnet fading to a watery rim.

Medium + intense nose of ripe plum, black currant, dried currant, raisin, menthol, prune. With some air, the alcohol come through, making the wine feel disjointed.

On the palate: Black currant, baking spices, red cherry.

Medium alcohol, full body, medium acidity. Heat of the alcohol comes through upon retronasal. Round and fine tannins. Intense all the way through and quite frankly overripe. This feels like a different wine than the one I tried a couple of weeks ago.

  • From a 50ml sample.

Deep ruby color fading to a watery rim.

Hint of Brett upon initial pour. Nose of raspberry, blackberry, nutmeg, violet and rose. Later on as the wine opens up, sweet strawberry notes emerge.

On the palate raspberry, oak spice.

Medium alcohol, medium+ body, medium acidity. The fine tannins but present on the tongue. The fresh acidity leads to a long, mineral finish.

While this still needs plenty of time for the oak to integrate, there’s elegance here that I prefer to the Bonnes Mares besides it. I’d love to try this ten+ years from now.

  • Tasting at Vogue (Chambolle Musigny): Two barrels tasted: "standard" and old-vine parcel.

Standard: Effusive, forward nose with red cherry and mineral accents. The palate is so decadent, concentrated and silky. Powerful and concentrated yet an air of lightness and refinement throughout. Long, complex finish of fruit, florals, smoke and minerals. 98+

Old-vine Parcel: Even more profound both in terms of concentration and in terms of the elegance in the form of detailed delineation. Long energetic finish. Probably a perfect wine if bottled on its own.

  • Burgundy, Day 2 (Beaune, France): We tasted two barrels of this; one from some younger vines (not the 1er cru Chambolle), and another from older vines. This will be bottled in March or April. For this wine, there was no punchdown, only pumpovers, and no cold soaks.

The first barrel was the younger vines, and for me showed a little more expressively right now. Although less so than the Bonnes Mares, this was still a very dark wine, with a very elegant nose showing a hint of florals and a big helping of sweet fruit. The palate here is incredibly elegant with a mix of red and black fruit. "Very patriarchal," said Millet.

The older vines showed a little more red-fruited, but also more ornery. The fruit profile is more on the red side, and the acidity a little higher. The opulence of the ripe fruit isn't on as stark a display, but the finish shows the same tannic intensity of the first barrel.

  • Cask sample. This wine is serious all the way through with depth and wonderful concentration. Lovely tight fruit of darker cherries and raspberries. Lovely roses. Deeply perfumed. Pretty full-bodied Musigny that is really deep and focused, yet so delicate and refined. Slightly more powerful and wilder in the middle part. Great fruit of darker cherries and raspberries. Pretty salts and leather. This one just is so present. Significant, yet so integrated tannins. Long and brilliant finish. Needs time, but this was a brilliant Musigny! 97 points.

  • Burgundy Trip 2019 Day 1; 11/13/2019-11/25/2019: (Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé - Chambolle-Musigny) Barrel tasting with François Millet. Deep purple colour. It was subtler than Amoureuses and Bonnes-Mares on the nose with elegant aromas of blackcurrant, wild flower and spice. Velvety tannins, good concentration and length. 92+

  • Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Cellar Visit and Tasting (Chambolle-Musigny): An educational visit with François Millet. A wet 2018 spring was followed by a hot summer summer and drought. An August 30th harvest was the earliest at Vogüé since 1895! Everything was ripe - flesh, seeds and skin. The wine is 50-75% done with ML, based on cuvee, but there is so little malic acid that it is barely apparent. François says this is a vintage that truly expresses summer.

Barrel tasting at the domaine. Comes across as less dense than Amoureuses or Bonnes Mares to start, but this starts expanding quickly into a near powerhouse. So rich and complex already. Exciting 96-98 point potential.
