Beautiful in color. Decanted about two hours and consumed over the next 5. Nose of a fruit tart with some earthiness or moss. Palate is black up front and transitions into blueberry and even some red raspberry. Allspice and cloves in the background. Chalky tannins reveal themselves with a long finish. Decades to go I think.

Very interesting Shiraz. Much less „in your face berries“. Smell of subtle berries and fruits. Tastes of berries, but much more subtle and complex than 28. also nuanced by earthy and mineral Flavors. Slight note of chocolate at the end. A very nice Shiraz.

2016 Penfolds St Henri Shiraz. Gorgeous nose of red and black fruits, Smokey meat, vanilla, and black pepper. Full bodied, powerful, concentrated with a lengthy finish teeth staining finish. This is going to need some time in the cellar. 4 hour decant.

Served blind. Aromas of blackberry, sightly peppery notes, leather, plum, earthy notes, cedar. Juicy, sweetly fruited, lightly textured and slightly cloying, plmmy fruit carries log, there is an alcoholic warmth but it's relatively well managed. A sense of thickness that I find a little intrusive... I guessed Shiraz Viogner blend 2017 Barossa Valley

Upfront quite a lot of dark fruit - sloe, blackberry, blueberry - mixed with hints of smoke, freshly cut wood and herbs. On the palate classic northern rhone style with dark fruit, some charcuteries, a touch of slightly bitter herbs. Maybe just a very slight hint of olive brine as well. Iron and flint. Very long. No heat or sweetness to speak of.

Tightly wound at this early stage. It's fully ripe without trying too hard. There are no green notes on the one hand, and no overweening heat or syrupy aspect on the other. Or at least those are my general impressions. Pinning down a specific flavor profile is tougher. I get a light perfume on the nose, followed by oily black fruits -- mostly blackberry? -- in the mouth. There's coffee in there somewhere, too, and a mid-length blueberry-muffin finish. It's straightforward, friendly, and *almost* worth the price tag.

I go up and down with the St Henri. this time I'm down. The 2016 now has nearly 5 years on it and still seems like a very young wine. The flavours are strong spicy but also some bitterness. It has some raw astringency which detracts from the wine. I bought a few so Ill out it away for a few years and see if it improves. I had it with some prime T Bone steak from our butcher of choice in Wonthaggi, Mitchell and Co. I should have chosen a different wine

At the winery. Still fairly reserve on the nose. Fine tannins and excellent balance. This and ‘17 Bin 389 had the best showing today, this will be a better wine in the long term tho. Fairly priced at A$100/b, bought a bottle.

Clear deep ruby; clean medium plus nose of cassis, blueberries, black pepper, toast and vanilla; dry; medium plus acidity; medium plus tannins; high alcohol; medium plus body; pronounced flavor intensity; pfn with addition of cocoa and black licorice; long finish; outstanding quality; from the bottle, it wasn’t as pronounced as we remember from the Penfolds dinner; we decanted and it was infinitely better

Clear deep ruby; clean medium minus nose of cocoa, tar, cassis, blueberries, vanilla and toast; dry; medium plus acidity; medium plus tannins; high alcohol; medium plus body; pronounced flavour intensity; pfn with addition of black licorice; long finish; outstanding quality; incredible palate more than compensates for shy nose
Perhaps a bit more muted than in previous vintages, the Henri still brings all the raw fruit and freshly cut herbs that you could have wanted, with sloe and blue fruit aromatics, showcasing the virtual grassy knoll of everything herbal, mints and basil, toasted oak, fabulous viscosity. Fab intro to the greats of Penfolds although it's getting more expensive every year.
Poured a Coravin sample. Just couldn't resist trying it. Massive sweet aromas of voilet, vanilla, licorice but most of dense dark fruit dominated by cherries and blackberry aromas. Full bodied with superfine tannin, very good acidity and more of that dark fruit. The balance is really very without any complaints. The finish just goes on. I could drink this now but it's a shame not to cellar it. A big wine that has a lot of nuance.

Early in my wine tasting days, I had the privilege of trying many great Australian wines. And, while it has been some time since I opened an Australian Shiraz, this wine doe NOT disappoint! Inky color with aromas of blue and dark red fruits. Flavors of dark red fruit and dark blue fruit. While extracted, not over the top in any way. Well balanced with fully integrated tannins. Great bottle of wine! Drink up!

Very different for penfolds - large vat aging- 100 year old vat for 12 months. Used to be called claret. Ages very well apparently - 40 to 50 years. John devernon apparently created this different from Max's grange. This is about elegance and European, coffee and leather. Line and line but not big structure tannins. Still got power but it get what they are saying.
On recorcking - they taste and top off. What do they top off with? And if the wine is bad you get it back.
Had to try it now and it’s young as hell but just beautiful. Packed with Silky dark cherrie tones, tobacco, figs, chocolate, black currant. It’s heavy but balanced. Lovely!

Great wine! Blue berries, earthy. Long finish. 3 hours decant och then drank over many hours. I think this will get even better. But 93 for now.
