  • Ruby red, hedonistic dark red fruit, floral, tar and some iron/minerality. Deep, already showing complexity, firm but polished tannins. Beautiful ending, very long. I d wait another five years for my next bottle. Great potential

  • Bottle at Glam in Venice, properly decanted for an hour. Medium deep ruby color. Understated, complex, dancing notes traversing between ripe red cherry, blackberry, toasted oak, warm spices, gravel, with end hint of menthol and leather. Dry, rounded acidity, integrated yet firm tannic spine, palate follows through. Full body, fantastic balance, long lingering finish.

  • Off the wine list at King, NYC. Decanted, then served immediately. Rose petals and cherry, with a savory character. Strong acidity, but not too tannic. Infanticide. Paired with their ‘onglet’ (steak cutlet): fine, but not inspired.

  • Pronounced nose intensity with mushroom truffle, strawberry. Medium+ acidity and tannin is high. Tannin is grippy and bold. Can taste red clay on the palate. Still youthful. Will need more years in the bottle.

  • Burlotto Barolo Tasting + X (Freiheit Vinothek, Ulm, Germany): Chalky, cool and floral nose. On the palate very juicy, spicy and dense. Fine tannin, wonderful balance, great length. Need some more years to fully unfold. 93++

  • Light ruby with translucence.
    Nose fruity.
Palate some fine tannins, red cherries. Still young and somewhat inchoate at this stage, but nice potential, and good balance, seems to be a promising vintage. 93 pts+

  • Giacomo Conterno Barolo Franchia 2016.
Wow - dette er helt magisk!
Roser, krydder, mørke kirsebær og svakt lær.
    En helt rå dybde.
Rent, elegant og full av power.
En eksplosjon av frukt i munn.
Enorm konsentrasjon uten å miste finessen.
    Holder fokus gjennom hele kurven.
    Fantastisk vin! 96-97p

  • With Giacomo Conterno's 2016 Francia, the first thing you notice is the lavender and sage notes, quite seductive, before more classic aromas of dark cherry, tar, and cedar. Good tannic grip and dense fruit. Drink starting 2030.

  • To be clear upfront, this was PnP at a restaurant; arguably, the wine might have benefitted from a long decant. I certainly enjoyed the wine a lot, but I have enjoyed plenty of Barolo similarly as much for a fraction of the cost. I have no idea what this wine will taste like in 10-20 years but at current form, I can't go all ga-ga over it.

  • Really intense and wonderfully seductive aromas with cherries, raw rose bush, graphite, really dusty soil floors, salts, dried balasmico and tar. Pretty full-bodied and energic wine with wonderfully concentrated cherry fruit, raspberries, dried fruit peel, hints of truffle and balsamic vinegar. Dense and concentrated finish with fantastic acidity and firm, but beautiful tannins that will only build around and give joy to those who want to store the wine for 20-40 years. Superb wine. 96 points. For now. (96-98p)

  • The '16 Francia is a massive, classic Barolo that is beautiful, but is going to need a lot of time to fully come together. On the nose, I found a core of dark red fruit and minerals alongside some higher-pitched blood orange fruit, and fresh herbs such as sage, mint, and lavender. On the palate, I found a massive burst of pure dark red fruit and intense, rocky minerals, joined by tobacco and fresh sage on the long finish. I found classically austere but fine grained tannins towards the back end, partially buried by the mass of fruit. While the wine is not very forthcoming on the palate at this stage, it impresses for the concentration of pure fruit and mineral tones and its sheer energy. It's a very good wine and it's clearly a Serralunga Barolo from start to finish.
