Drank alongside same bottle of 2004 Ratti Barolo Marcenasco which was fun. PnP for the 2004 versus a 6 hour decant on the 2016. This 2016 was drinking well with the air, lovely nose, resolving tannins, and long finish. Great to see how it will evolve and fully expect in 12 years it will come to the terrific place I found the 2004. Zero sediment. Light color, full body compared to the dark ruby softer 2004. 92 now - 95 in 12 years

93-96p Shouldn’t have been opened now. But now that’s it’s open: muted the first 2-3 hours. Then strawberry, sour cherry and perfumed roses. Concentrated and promising on the palate. Not as easy to approach at this juvenile stage as the 2018. Will probably be great from 2027 and onwards.

High acidity and tannins that dominates the experience during the first 30 min in the glass. As a Nebbiolo lover I know what happens when the wine starts to open up by air and/ or time! Red fruit driven rather than floral driven on the nose and palett. winky dry herbs and meadow flowers in the background. Will improve for decades

Popped and poured. Beautiful dark, translucent ruby. Very pretty nose. Mixture of tar and roses. In the mouth, quite light on its feet, excellent ripe fruit that dances across the palate. Has that nice earthy edge that keeps it honest. Easy drinking, early enjoyment wine. Good value. 5-12-16-8: 91/100.

Pale ruby with just a hint of garnet, very restraint nose of black cherry, black plum, earth and a touch of rose peddle, lean and still rather tight on the palate with layers of red fruit, spice, orange peel, earth, moderate to strong tannins, and plump acidity, finish is all barolo with strong teethy and powdery tannins, red berry fruit, earthy undertones and so much more

Decant 5 hrs - zero sediment - zero cork seepage. Though approachable (and enjoyable) after 1 hr there is notable improvement into 7th hour. Dramatic change in color to deeper ruby, beautiful clarity. Rose on nose strawberry on palate. Opened alongside a 2016 Vietti Castiglone. Both were just fantastic with the Pasta Puttanesca. We felt the Ratti was in better shape for drinking now, but just barely. Vietti had better structure for aging perhaps. Both singing now and will improve over many yrs

Translucent ruby, some brick change. Surprisingly open for a 2016 Barolo, even after a minimal decant of 30 min. Beautifully perfumed with an archetypical Nebbiolo profile of roses, tart red cherry, redcurrant, tar and slightl meaty notes. Silky, powerful tannin structure and a long finish.
While very enjoyable now, I can only imagine where it will be in 2-3 years.

Initial impressions: Very candied on the nose, with lots of black cherry, candied violet and powder sugar aromas layered over toasty, sweet, oak spice. Smells terrific, for a candy or a cake. To be accurate, it is recognizable as Nebbiolo, but it's very candied. The mouth is nothing like the nose, much more delicate, even a touch dilute perhaps with a pleasant feel marred by wood tannins that clip the finish. There is an appeal here, but the less appealing aspects of this wine are definitely dominant today. Short, dry, and clumsy.

Compared to other 2016 Barolo wines this is not very concentrated, expressive or intriguing. For me it is a lighter barolo version - quite soft, polished and plain, but might turn out to be a very elegant Barolo. On day two it gave away more, so therefore around 88-89.

What a delicate, velvety wine this is. Barolo's with this light of color (higher transparency) aren't seen as frequently these days, but this almost looks like it considered life as a rosé. None of those young life, sledgehammer tannins here. This mouthfeel is more like a burgundy (yes, that type of Barolo). It's a supreme joy to drink this wine now. Not sure what the future holds, and I'm not sure I care. Decent finish, and bit light on the nose for those chasing loud typicity. But this is an unexpected treat off the beaten path, in my view. 50/5/13/17/9

Not a producer I typically seek out but my Costco had this bottle and I wanted to check in on 2016 Barolo, given the critical acclaim. Unless it’s in a shut down phase right now, this was pretty meh. Nice Nebbiolo color but the win was uninspiring and plain. This might have some magic in 10 years but right now it’s mediocre.
Delicious. Hard to believe that this is a 2016, there’s no way that I would ever guess this blind as a 2016. The color is brick red. Nose of black tea, maybe chai tea, mushroom, very earthy. Maybe some cherry if you really dig deep. Palate is well integrated already. Medium bodied with a long finish. Not sure this one is a wine to go the distance based on where it is at the moment, but what do I know? It’s delicious now.

Medium-light red, refined nose, nice not overbearing tannin, anise/black cherry, black tea, no tar or rose petals.
Decanted ~ 4 hours assuming it needed it since so young, possibly too long as was surprised by lack of punch especially on nose. Was not better on day 2.

Light brick red. Funky lingonberry with a hint of earth & slightly maderized lift. Hint of sweet fruit. Great acid balance and relatively soft but structured palate. Very pleasant wine but maybe lacking great aging potential.

Very Light color with some brickiness, looks 15+ years old. Earth driven nose, with dry herbs and must. Light pretty wine with lots of tannin and long acid finish. Palate mostly earthy but there’s fruit there with all that tannin. Well made wine that should pair well with pasta and should age nicely 20 year One hour later - as the wine opens up sweet fruit starts to show up. To me this is another indication that this wine is going to age very nicely

Not ready to drink at all. Closed from the beginning and nothing happens day 1. I can really taste the potential day 2, the tannins are smooth, nice red overripe strawberries, nice concentration and well integrated alcohol. This is a rather light Barolo but very enjoyable and with a great future. I will let the 4 bottles I have left rest for another 4 years.

Mixed samples for the holidays: Medium ruby color. The nose shows suave cherries, red currants, topped in a complex host of leather, pepper, grilled steak, clove, with underlying mushroom and rose petal tones. Medium/full-bodied with solid, grippy tannins and racy acidity. A deep but tart core of black cherries and red currants, chewy, ripe but fresh, and topped in elements of menthol, tar, smoky earth, pepper, mushroom and rose petals. This needs at least a few years or a good decant, but is balanced well and has a lot to offer.

Medium ruby color. Fresh aromas of cherry, sweet tobacco and hints of chocolate and rose petals. Full bodied with grippy-smooth tannins, fresh acidity and some bright fruit. A long finish that remains fresh and has a slightly spicy zing to it. This wine could use a bit more time to harmonise a bit better. And I expect it could develop some more complexity as well. It certainly has the structure to develop for many more years to come. Drink 2022 - 2031.

First time to drink a Renato Ratti barolo and I was surprised by the softness and openess of the wine. No harsh tannins at this early age but cherries, strawberry, choclate and some menthol in both nose and taste. Notes of the used oak were clearly present but not overwhelming the fruity character of this wine. It might lack some depth, but with only half an hour decant, and open and pleasant young barolo. Bottle was finished very quickly

Bright and transparent colour. Raspberry Fruit and roses - elegance notes in nose.
Red berry fruits dominate the palette, lifting accidity and hidden tanins, medium long with a good balance. Wait wait, but also an elegant wine for now.
Can’t wait to taste more 2016’s.

Double decanted eight hours ahead of serving, and consumed over two nights. Medium-light body, floral, with red fruit aromas, good acid and tannin backbone, a remarkably elegant style for a house that was famous for extracted wines 20 years ago. This a Barolo that can definitely be consumed earlier than most others, although this will surely also age gracefully for 20-25 years or more. My impression is that this is more like a Barbaresco than a Barolo. 91 today and I would bet a 93-94 in 2030.

Garnet hue that opens with red licorice, rose and tobacco aromas. Raspberry, fig and dried cranberry lead on the front palate while leather and spice cake linger on the finish. Lovely blend of acidity/fruit and tannins which require 30 minutes to smooth out. An elegant Barolo that I’d recommend would benefit from a few more years, but if decanted can be quite enjoyable today.

Well made wine that should pair well with pasta and should age nicely 20 year
One hour later - as the wine opens up sweet fruit starts to show up. To me this is another indication that this wine is going to age very nicely

Intens granaatrood. Erg lekker. Zal nog beter worden (drinken vanaf 2024)

Nice and smooth after four hours decanted. Still drinkable earlier, but much better 2-3 hours into the decant.

Mellanmörk färg. Mycket kraftfull men välbalanserad smak.

Garnet in colour. Medium+ nose intensity (seem to be closed; need decanting), notes of licorice, smoke, tobacco. High tannin, medium+ acidity, full bodied and pronounced flavour intensity.

Needed about 3 hours to open up.

A light Barolo, with good, smooth flavor. Drinking well. Too light for heavy meat or red sauce dishes. Best with cheese plate, fish, light pasta. Very enjoyable.

Not sure how anyone cannot love this. Such a tasty wine. A tad on the lighter body style.. Ratti delivers on all cylinders. Smooth and lovely with tastes of cherry, blackberry, raspberry, some pepper and vanilla/oak. Aromas of tobacco and leather. Smooth finish.
